    Notes: Four tetraalkoxysilanes Si(OR)4 were absorbed into networks of polydimethylsiloxane and then hydrolyzed, using a variety of catalysts, to give reinforcing silica particles. On the basis of the amount of silica precipitated and the extent of reinforcement, the (decreasing) order of effectiveness was found to be tetraethoxysilane, tetrapropoxysilane, tetrabutoxysilane, and tetramethoxysilane.

    Notes: The pfk3 mutation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae causes glucose-negativity in a pfk1 genetic background, the mutant is temperature-sensitive for growth and homozygous diploids do not sporulate. It fails to accumulate trehalose, and has an altered glycogen accumulation profile under glucose-starvation conditions. pfk3-6, one of the alleles of pfk3, has an altered morphology, forming long chain-like structures at 36°C. The PFK3 gene was cloned by complementation of the mutant phenotypes. Integrative transformation demonstrated that the complementing fragment encoded the authentic PFK3 gene. The disruption of the gene does not affect viability. Like the EMS-induced pfk3 mutant, the disruptants are temperature-sensitive and in a pfk1 genetic background are also glucose-negative. The PFK3 transcript is induced by heat-shock. Partial DNA sequence shows that PFK3 is identical to TPS2 (De Virgilio et al., 1993). We demonstrate that, apart from being a structural determinant of trehalose 6-phosphate phosphatase, PFK3 (TPS2) is required for PFKII synthesis and normal regulation of S. cerevisiae response to nutrient and thermal stresses.

    Notes: The stabilities of tris-oxalato complexes of trivalent metals like Fe, Cr, Al, Ga have been studied. These compounds have been found to decompose in steps by interaction with acids. The stepwise instability constants and also the overall instability constants of the reactions MOx3‴ → MOx′2 + Ox″, MOx′2 → MOx+ + Ox″, MOx+ → M3+ + Ox″ and MOx3‴ → M3+ + 3 Ox″ have been measured.

    Notes: Glycine is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the spinal cord and in the brain stem, where it acts by activating a chloride conductance. The postsynaptic glycine receptor has been purified and contains two transmembrane subunits of 48 kDa (α) and 58 kDa (β), and a peripheral membrane protein of 93 kDa. cDNA sequencing of the α and β subunits has revealed a common structural organization and a strong homology between these polypeptides and the nicotinic acetylcholine and GABAA receptor proteins. The glycine receptor exhibits a heterogeneity resulting from the existence of several α subtypes with distinct functional properties and different developmental expressions. When present in the central nervous system in situ, as well as in primary cultures of spinal cord neurons, these receptors are localized at the postsynaptic membrane adjacent to the presynaptic release sites, thus forming functional microdomains at the neuronal surface. This distribution raises the question of the formation and the maintenance of the heterogeneity of the somato-dendritic plasma membrane.

    Notes: N-acryloyl pyrrolidone (NAP) was synthesized by reaction of pyrrolidone with acryloyl chloride. First, the polymerization of NAP and copolymerization of NAP with styrene (St) were carried out at 60°C, using 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Kinetic studies showed that the rate of polymerization (Rp) could be expressed by Rp = K [AIBN]0.5 [NAP]1.0. The reactivity of NAP was found to be larger than that of N-methacryloyl pyrrolidone. The overall activation energy was calculated to be 24.3 kcal mole-1. The following monomer reactivity ratio and Q and e values were obtained. NAP(M1) - St(M2): r1 = 1.50, r2 = 0.35, Q1 = 0.42, and e1 = 1.60. Second, graft copolymers were synthesized by reacting pyrrolidone, in the presence of a catalytic amount of its potassium salt, with poly(NAP-co-St).
