Mandrus We have investigated polycrystalline samples of the zigzag chain system BaTb 2 O 4 with magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation ( μ SR ) . No magnetic transitions are observed in the bulk measurements, while neutron diffraction reveals the presence of lo… [Phys. Rev. B 92, 041110(R)] Published Mon Jul 13, 2015

Novotny In this paper we demonstrate tunability of a metasurface, which is the two-dimensional equivalent of a metamaterial, also referred to as a metafilm, by changing the permittivity in a continuous flow channel that interacts with the metasurface. Numerical simulations and experimental results are prese... [Phys. Rev. B 83, 205130] Published Wed May 25, 2011

Beschreibung: Author(s): Thomas E. Baker, E. Miles Stoudenmire, Lucas O. Wagner, Kieron Burke, and Steven R. White An exponential interaction is constructed so that one-dimensional atoms and chains of atoms mimic the general behavior of their three-dimensional counterparts. Relative to the more commonly used soft-Coulomb interaction, the exponential greatly diminishes the computational time needed for calculatin… [Phys. Rev. B 91, 235141] Published Wed Jun 24, 2015

Beschreibung: Molecular genetic studies of Drosophila melanogaster have led to profound advances in understanding the regulation of development. Here we report gene expression patterns for nearly one-third of all Drosophila genes during a complete time course of development. Mutations that eliminate eye or germline tissue were used to further analyze tissue-specific gene expression programs. These studies define major characteristics of the transcriptional programs that underlie the life cycle, compare development in males and females, and show that large-scale gene expression data collected from whole animals can be used to identify genes expressed in particular tissues and organs or genes involved in specific biological and biochemical processes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Arbeitman, Michelle N -- Furlong, Eileen E M -- Imam, Farhad -- Johnson, Eric -- Null, Brian H -- Baker, Bruce S -- Krasnow, Mark A -- Scott, Matthew P -- Davis, Ronald W -- White, Kevin P -- Howard Hughes Medical Institute/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Sep 27;297(5590):2270-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12351791" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Plasma Abeta42 (amyloid beta42 peptide) is invariably elevated in early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (AD), and it is also increased in the first-degree relatives of patients with typical late-onset AD (LOAD). To detect LOAD loci that increase Abeta42, we used plasma Abeta42 as a surrogate trait and performed linkage analysis on extended AD pedigrees identified through a LOAD patient with extremely high plasma Abeta. Here, we report linkage to chromosome 10 with a maximal lod score of 3.93 at 81 centimorgans close to D10S1225. Remarkably, linkage to the same region was obtained independently in a genome-wide screen of LOAD sibling pairs. These results provide strong evidence for a novel LOAD locus on chromosome 10 that acts to increase Abeta.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ertekin-Taner, N -- Graff-Radford, N -- Younkin, L H -- Eckman, C -- Baker, M -- Adamson, J -- Ronald, J -- Blangero, J -- Hutton, M -- Younkin, S G -- AG06656/AG/NIA NIH HHS/ -- MH59490/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- P50 AG16574/AG/NIA NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Dec 22;290(5500):2303-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, Jacksonville, FL 32224, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11125143" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Despite widespread interest in the evolution of social intelligence, little is known about how wild animals acquire and store information about social companions or whether individuals possessing enhanced social knowledge derive biological fitness benefits. Using playback experiments on African elephants (Loxodonta africana), we demonstrated that the possession of enhanced discriminatory abilities by the oldest individual in a group can influence the social knowledge of the group as a whole. These superior abilities for social discrimination may result in higher per capita reproductive success for female groups led by older individuals. Our findings imply that the removal of older, more experienced individuals, which are often targets for hunters because of their large size, could have serious consequences for endangered populations of advanced social mammals such as elephants and whales.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉McComb, K -- Moss, C -- Durant, S M -- Baker, L -- Sayialel, S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 Apr 20;292(5516):491-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Experimental Psychology, School of Biological Sciences, University of Sussex, Brighton BN1 9QG, UK. karenm@biols.susx.ac.uk〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11313492" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
