    Description: Simulating magma propagation pathways requires both a well‐calibrated model for the stress state of the volcano and models for dike advance within such a stress field. Here, we establish a framework for calculating computationally efficient and flexible magma propagation scenarios in the presence of caldera structures. We first develop a three‐dimensional (3D) numerical model for the stress state at volcanoes with mild topography, including the stress induced by surface loads and unloading due to the formation of caldera depressions. Then, we introduce a new, simplified 3D model of dike propagation. Such a model captures the complexity of 3D magma trajectories with low running time, and can backtrack dikes from a vent to the magma storage region. We compare the new dike propagation model to a previously published 3D model. Finally, we employ the simplified model to produce shallow dike propagation scenarios for a set of synthetic caldera settings with increasingly complex topographies. The resulting synthetic magma pathways and eruptive vent locations broadly reproduce the variability observed in natural calderas.

    Description: The international transatlantic time and frequency transfer experiment was designed by participating laboratories and has been implemented during 1994 to test the international communications path involving a large number of transmitting stations. This paper will present empirically determined clock and time scale differences, time and frequency domain instabilities, and a representative power spectral density analysis. The experiments by the method of co-location which will allow absolute calibration of the participating laboratories have been performed. Absolute time differences and accuracy levels of this experiment will be assessed in the near future.

    Description: The objective of this paper is to describe current results from an on-going study of the mechanisms that led to the failure of the TIBB. Experimental and analytical results are presented. Experimental results include load, strain, and deflection data for the TIBB (Technology Integration Box Beam). An analytical investigation was conducted to compliment the experimental investigation and to gain additional insight into the TIBB structural response. Analytical results include strain and deflection results from a global analysis of the TIBB. A local analysis of the failure region is being completed. These analytical results are validated through comparisons with the experimental results from the TIBB tests. The experimental and analytical results from the TIBB tests are used to determine a sequence of events that may have resulted in failure of the TIBB. A potential cause of failure is high stresses in a stiffener runout region. Typical analytical results are presented for a stiffener runout specimen that is being defined to simulate the TIBB failure mechanisms. The results of this study are anticipated to provide better understanding of potential failure mechanisms in composite aircraft structures, to lead to future design improvements, and to identify needed analytical tools for design and analysis.

    Description: Composite structures have the potential to be cost-effective, structurally efficient primary aircraft structures. The Advanced Composites Technology (ACT) Program has the goal to develop the technology to exploit this potential for heavily loaded aircraft structures. As part of the ACT Program, Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company completed the design and fabrication of the Technology Integration Box Beam (TIBB). The TIBB is an advanced composite prototype structure for the center wing section of the C-130 aircraft. Lockheed subjected the TIBB to downbending, upbending, torsion and combined upbending and torsion load conditions to verify the design. The TIBB failed at 83 percent of design ultimate load for the combined upbending and torsion load condition. The objective of this paper is to describe the mechanisms that led to the failure of the TIBB. The results of a comprehensive analytical and experimental study are presented. Analytical results include strain and deflection results from both a global analysis of the TIBB and a local analysis of the failure region. These analytical results are validated by experimental results from the TIBB tests. The analytical and experimental results from the TIBB tests are used to determine a sequence of events that resulted in failure of the TIBB.     Description: Two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) is the most accurate and precise method of comparing two remote clocks or time scales. The accuracy obtained is dependent on the accuracy of the determination of the non-reciprocal delays of the transmit and the receive paths. When the same transponders in the satellite at the same frequencies are used, then the non-reciprocity in the Earth stations is the limiting factor for absolute time transfer.

    Description: The total dielectronic recombination rates for Ca and Ni ions were calculated taking into account autoionization to excited states of the recombining ion and stabilizing radiative transitions of the recombining electron. Radiative transitions of the recombining ion are found to be the dominant stabilizing processes, and the relative importance of Delta n = 0 and Delta n not equal to 0 transitions in the relevant temperature region is determined for each ion. The relative importance of the Delta n = 0 and Delta n not equal to 0 contributions is significantly altered for some ions by the inclusion of autoionization to excited levels. The relative abundance of the various ionization stages has been determined by using a corona equilibrium model in which collisional ionization and inner-shell excitation followed by autoionization are balanced by direct radiative and dielectronic recombination.

    Description: For a decade and a half Global Positioning System (GPS) common-view time transfer has greatly served the needs of primary timing laboratories for regular intercomparisons of remote atomic clocks. However, GPS as a one-way technique has natural limits and may not meet all challenges of the comparison of the coming new generation of atomic clocks. Two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) is a promising technique which may successfully complement GPS. For two years, regular TWSTFT's have been performed between eight laboratories situated in both Europe and North America, using INTELSAT satellites. This has enabled an extensive direct comparison to be made between these two high performance time transfer methods. The performance of the TWSTFT and GPS common view methods are compared over a number of time-transfer links. These links use a variety of time-transfer hardware and atomic clocks and have baselines of substantially different lengths. The relative merits of the two time-transfer systems are discussed.

    Description: The design of the X-ray Large Array (XLA) which is to be assembled and operated in space is discussed. The XLA is a 100 sq m array of 64 detector modules with a total of 512 detectors, each similar to the ones flown on the HEAO-1 spacecraft, packaged in groups of eight to form a module. The XLA will be able to deal with many extremely fast processes which occur in compact X-ray sources and will be used to study black hole candidates; its fine time resolution will make it possible to resolve the spatial structure of celestial X-ray sources using lunar occulatation, the angular structure of quasars, and active galactic nuclei. Details of the XLA configuration, and the assembly and packaging options are described together with systems requirements. Multiple configuration diagrams are included.

    Description: A Stiffener Runout Test Specimen (SRTS) has been analyzed and tested to verify the failure scenario for a large composite wingbox beam subcomponent. The SRTS was taken from an undamaged region of the subcomponent that was similar to the failure region of the boxbeam. Extensive analyses were performed to determine the proper load introduction and constraint conditions required for the SRTS test to simulate the response of the subcomponent. The present paper describes the analyses that led to the design of test fixtures that ensured that the response of the SRTS duplicated the response of the box beam. The results of the SRTS test are described and compared with the analytical predictions.
