Notes: Summary The Penduline Tit female with the ring Radolfzell BT 30689 was controlled in the Valley of the Upper River Main in Staffelstein (50.06 N/11.00 E) from 20. 4. 1986 to 23. 6. 1986. After successful breeding (5 fledglings) the female turned to north and was controlled breeding again at 27. 7. 1986 in Mennewitz (near Köthen, 51.51 N/12.00 E). The second brood was successful, too, with about 6 fledglings. Up to this time, the greatest distance of migration measured during breeding season was about 40 km. 200 km will probably not be the maximum migration distance during one breeding season.

Notes: Abstract Concerning Medieval French, text-processing has to handle two major problems: first the under-developed state of linguistic knowledge of scholars; secondly the very large variations in forms and spellings occurring throughout the manuscripts. In order to extract and provide lexicographical and grammatical information from many yet undescribed texts, our research group has decided to devise an expert system which would help identify and parse the text-words and would be linked to an open relational database. The design of our expert system is outlined here: we especially outline the initial knowledge base and the nature of the different sets of rules we will make use of. Some examples describe how the system will operate and the types of advantages that are expected from its use. Finally the paper lists the studies and published work which in the last years have provided the groundwork for this project.

Notes: Abstract By improvement of an earlier published preparation method for producing thin single crystals soluble in water, it is possible to determine structure and absorption potentials of some reflections of KCl and NaCl crystals by a convergent beam diffraction technique. The structure potentials evaluated on the basis of the two-beam dynamical theory are found to depend on the thickness of the crystals used. The structure potentials corrected for relativistic, thermal and many-beam effects are compared with theoretical values. The measured (220)- and (420)-absorption potentials of NaCl are in good agreement with theoretical values. Radiation damage in KCl and NaCl crystals by electron beams is observed.

Notes: Abstract Single crystal lamina of potassium chlorate and potassium chloride are grown from the solution in the narrow space between two parallel glass surfaces. Electron micrographs are taken at 60 and 80 keV. The monocrystalline structure is demonstrated by the diffraction of a parallel electron beam. The exact thickness of the crystals can be determined from the subsidiary maxima within the Bragg reflections in a convergent beam pattern. Other crystals are under investigation.

Notes: Summary In an outdoor experiment the distribution of earthworms (Lumbricus spp., Allolobophora spp.) under different plant species was studied. Earthworms avoid uncovered areas, but show different reactions under vegetation. This effect reappears in the same manner every year. A particular preference was shown for clover whereas onion was least preferred. Possible reasons for this behaviour are the extent of covering, the moisture regime and exudates of the plants. According to the results obtained the deciding factor seems to be the extent of cover whereas odorous substances are of secondary importance.

Notes: Abstract The γ-irradiation of malic acid in aqueous solutions was studied under initially oxygenated and oxygen-free conditions in an attempt to determine the possible interconversion of malic acid into other carboxylic acids, specifically those associated with Krebs cycle. The effect of dose on product formation of the system was investigated. Gas-liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry was used as the principal means of identification of the non-volatile products. Thin layer chromotography and direct probe mass spectroscopy were also employed. The findings show that a variety of carboxylic acids are formed, with malonic and succinic acids in greatest abundance. These products have all been identified as being formed in the γ-irradiation of acetic acid, suggesting a common intermediary. Since these molecules fit into a metabolic cycle, it is strongly suggestive that prebiotic pathways provided the basis for biological systems.

Notes: Abstract Four different measurement techniques: EPR, NAA, DLTS, and luminescence were applied to characterize the properties of chromium in silicon. The solubility of chromium in silicon was determined and its pairing reaction with boron was studied. The energy level atE c−0.23 eV was attributed to interstitial chromium and a second level atE v+0.27 eV was correlated to chromium-boron pairs. The luminescence band of the chromium-boron pairs was clearly identified. The properties of chromium are compared with those of other transition metal impurities in silicon crystals.

Notes: Abstract Thirteen new congenic lines have been produced which have chromosome-7 segments introduced from different strains onto the C57BL/10Sn background. Sublines B10.P(61NX)C,D, and E received chromosome-7 segments from P/J, B10.CE(62NX) from CE/J, B10.SEC(64NX)A,C,E, and F from SEC/1Re, B10.SM(65NX) from SM/J, B10.WB(66NX) from WB/Re, B10.A(67NX) from A/SnGrf, B10.AKR(68NX) from AKR/SnGrf, and B10.K(69NX) from C3H.K. Isograft testing indicated that three sublines, B10.P(61NX)D, B10.CE(62NX)B, and B10.WB(66NX)B are histoisogenic, i.e., histocompatible within each line. With the exception of B10.A(67NX), B10.AK(68NX), and B10.K(69NX), which have not been isografted, the remaining sublines showed residual heterozygosity on isografting. The three histoisogenic lines have undergone F1 testing and have been found to possess theH-4 a allele and new and distinct alleles at theH-1 locus. They have been designated B10.P(61NX)-H-4a H-1 d , B10.WB(66NX)-H-4a H-1 e , and B10.CE(62NX)-H-4a H-1 f . Direct exchange of grafts has indicated the following genotypes: B10.A(67NX)-H-4a H-1 b , B10.AK(68NX)-H-4a H-1 b , and B10.K(69NX)-F-4a H-1 b . The B10.SEC(64NX) and B10.SM(65NX) sublines have not been typed completely forH-4 andH-1. F 1 testing or direct exchange of skin grafts indicated that B10.P(61NX)-H-4a H-1 d , B10.WB(66NX)-H-4a H-1 e , B10.A(67NX)-H-4a H-1 b B10.AK(68NX)-H-4a H-1 b and B10.K(69NX)-H-4a H1 b possess nonon-H-1 histocompatibility differences from the G57BL/10 background.

Notes: Abstract Seven congenic strains differing from C57BL/10Sn at theH-13 locus have been produced which define fourH-13 alleles. Isografting, exchanging of grafts between sublines, F1 testing, and linkage testing demonstrate the presence of additionalH genes in four of these strains. The medial survival times (MSTs) of skin grafts fromH-13a to unimmunizedH-13b recipients ranged from 69 to 83 days. Rejection across all other barriers was extremely weak with most MSTs being 〉 100 days. Preinjection of donor strain thymocytes caused accelerated rejection of skin grafts fromH-13a toH-13b mice, but had only minimal effect on skin grafts across other barriers. Rejection ofH-13 incompatible grafts was significantly stronger when the donor and host areH-3a than when they wereH-3b.
