Notes: Summary In the cotyledons of mustard seedlings (Sinapis alba L.) amylase activity can be induced by phytochrome. In the dark amylase activity remains low. Gibberellic acid (GA3) does not stimulate an increase of amylase activity in this system. Inhibitors of RNA and protein synthesis strongly inhibit the increase of amylase activity mediated by phytochrome. In gel electrophoresis amylase from mustard seedlings reveals 3 bands. The electrophoretic pattern is the same for extracts from dark-grown and from irradiated seedlings. When mustard amylases were incubated with starch the pattern of products was similar to that produced by commercially available barley β-amylase and not similar to that produced by Bacillus subtilis α-amylase.

Notes: Abstract The paper deals with the deterioration of human capital during spells of unemployment. In our model the probability of leaving the unemployment pool decreases with the duration of unemployment. It can be shown that with a linear deterioration function and a simple distribution function for the reservation productivity of firms, unemployment duration is suitably described by a distribution of the Gompertz-Makeham type. In a numerical simulation it could be demonstrated that deterioration of human capital during unemployment affects the relation between vacancies and unemployment in a specific way: in the case of labour market slackness the steady-state Beveridge curve bends away markedly from the standard u-v-curve in an outward direction while in a situation of almost full employment the effects are negligible. For higher deterioration parameters the Beveridge curve may even be upward sloping in a situation of excess supply on the labour market, implying the existence of multiple equilibria. Empirical estimation of the distribution function with German labour market data 1984–1987 reveals that the multiple equilibrium case is likely to be relevant in reality.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The adsorbate system carbonmonoxide-Rhodium (001) was studied by photoemission (PES) and ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS). In common with other CO adsorption systems, CO adsorption causes a decrease in the intensity of the metal-d-band emission and an increase in the neighbourhood of the CO-1π and 5σ state energies. The energy-and angular-distributions of the scattered ions are well described by the binary collision approximation. The ion induced electron emission shows a qualitative dependence on ion species (He+ or Ne+). The difference is attributed to Auger electrons from the Auger neutralisation of the projectile being energetically above or below the vacuum level for He+ and Ne+ projectiles respectively.

Notes: Summary The influence of stirrer speed in the third preculture on the performance of penicillin V production by Penicillium chrysogenum in complex medium in a 100-l air-lift tower loop reactor was investigated. The process performance in the main culture was improved by increasing the stirrer speed from 500 to 750 rpm: the pellet size was reduced to half, the cell growth was influenced only slightly, but the production phase was extended considerably, and the final penicillin concentration was increased from 5.1 g 1-1 to 10.4 g 1-1.

Notes: Summary A modification of the German standard method for the determination of hydroxyproline (DIN 10144) is described. By applying a thermostatted reaction coil the relatively slow developing colour reaction between pyrrols and 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde could be adapted to FIA-conditions. The presented FIA-method allows for an injection frequency of 80/h and a sample throughput, on routine basis, of about 40/h. The reproducibility of multiple injections in the range 20–200 mg hydroxyproline/l hydrolysate is 1.5% r.s.d. Sulfuric and hydrochloric acid have been used for hydrolysis.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen eines Methodenvergleiches wurde der Fluorgehalt identischer Knochenproben durch Neutronen (NAA)- und Photonen (PAA)-Aktivierungsanalyse untersucht. 4 h (PAA). Die Regressionsanalyse ergibt einen Korrelationskoeffizienten von 0,96.
Notes: Abstract For comparison of the two methods the fluorine content was determined in identical bone samples. After optimization of the irradiation and measuring conditions the detection limit was found to be 3.9 Μg for NAA and 0.3 Μg for PAA. Both detection limits are sufficient for the quantitative determination of the minimum expected value of 200 ppm fluorine in a bone biopsy sample of 50 mg. In this case the analytical error is ±15% for NAA and ±25% for PAA, respectively. The time necessary for the analysis of a single sample is 1 min (NAA) or 4 h (PAA). The regression analysis yields a correlation coefficient of 0.96.
