    Description: The Ariel-5 All-Sky Monitor measured the 3-6 keV X-ray intensity of 0620-00 for two days shortly after peak emission in August 1975, and continuously throughout September 1975. The effective exposure each day for this source (and every other source in the 80% of the celestial sphere covered by the monitor) is approximately 250 sq cm sec. The light curve obtained through October 1 (when the spin axis was again pointed to A0620-00) is shown. The intensity difference at maximum is obviously a manifestation of the very soft spectrum of the source. Clearly, A0620-00 was approximately four times as bright as Sco X-1 at maximum in the band 3-6 keV. The decay is quite smooth, but cannot be fit with a single e-folding time. The interval between the early All-Sky Monitor points and the onset of continuous coverage has an inferred e-folding time of 22 days, but it is continually increasing throughout September. A0620-00 is apparently similar in its X-ray character to the very strong, long-lasting transient X-ray sources which presently number six. In contrast, only three can be sensibly reconciled with the lower-intensity, shorter-duration hard-spectrum transients which have been found to pulse on a time scale of minutes.

    Description: The rationale for a semipermanent all-sky X-ray monitor and a variety of options for its implementation are discussed. It is concluded that the Space Station offers an excellent opportunity for hosting such a monitor, and that a set of pinhole cameras can be configured to provide an effective and economical monitor system. A baseline of six independent pinhole modules, each of which requires approximately 1 cu ft, 30 pounds, 2 W and 100 bits per second, can provide full sky coverage with scientifically interesting sensitivities. No other resources or special accommodation (such as detailed alignment registration, time-tagging, or on-orbit servicing) would be required. The baseline system can locate bright sources to a few arcmin and can simultaneously measure each of the several hundred sources in the sky brighter than a few thousandths the intensity of the Crab nebula every day for decades.

    Description: Solid State Spectrometer observations of the core of the Perseus cluster have resulted in the detection of X-ray emission lines due to Si, S, and Fe. Analysis of the spectrum indicates that the X-ray emission has at least two characteristic temperatures. This is interpreted in the framework of radiative accretion in the core of the cluster. The derived parameters are a cooling time less than or approximately equal to 2 x 10 to the ninth years for the low-temperature gas, a mass accretion rate of approximately 300 solar masses per year, and a characteristic size of 10-20 kpc for the cool gas. The Fe abundance in the core (approximately 0.4) is similar to the Fe abundance averaged over the whole cluster, indicating that Fe emission is not strongly concentrated about NGC 1275. The Si and S abundances are consistent with solar values.

    Description: The solid-state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory and the GSFC cosmic X-ray spectrometer on OSO 8 have observed the X-ray spectrum of SN 1006. The data can be well represented by a power-law model with alpha = 1.2, similar to the spectrum of the Crab Nebula. This is in contrast to the radio and X-ray maps of SN 1006 which show a shell structure more typical of SNR with thermal X-ray emission. The X-ray spectrum is suggestive of nonthermal synchrotron emission, raising the possibility that the remnant of SN 1006 contains a source of relativistic electrons.

    Description: A summary is presented of results from the Solid State Spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory for seven RS CVn binaries. The spectra of all require two emission components, evidenced by line emission characteristics of plasma at 4-million to 8-million K and bremsstrahlung characteristic of 20-million to 100-million K. The data are interpreted in terms of magnetic coronal loops similar to those seen on the sun, although with different characteristic parameters. The emission regions could be defined by separate magnetic structures. For pressures less than 10 dynes/sq cm the low temperature plasma would be confined within the stellar radii, while the high temperature plasma would, for the synchronous, close binaries, fill the binary orbits. However, for loop pressures exceeding 100 dynes sq cm, the high temperature components would also be confined to within the stellar radii, in loops covering only small fractions of the stellar surfaces. While the radio properties and the occurrence of X-ray flares suggest the larger emission regions, the observations of time variations leave the ambiguity unresolved.

    Description: Results are reported for hard X-ray observations of the binary system AM Her, which were coincident with soft X-ray and ground-based optical measurements. In the 2-60-keV band, variability was detected with an eclipse during phases 0.5 to 0.7 with respect to the 0.12892-day optical minima, synchronous with the known soft X-ray eclipse. The 2-60-keV uneclipsed flux was 9.5 by 10 to the -10th power erg/sq cm per sec, of which 86% lies above 10 keV. Thus, AM Her contains a hard source located near the similarly eclipsed soft X-ray source. The X-ray data are interpreted in terms of thermal bremsstrahlung from accretion onto a white dwarf.

    Description: An eclipsing X-ray binary pulsator consistent with the location of A1540-53 has been observed. The source pulse period was 528.93 + or - 0.10 s. The binary nature is confirmed by a Doppler curve for the pulsation period. The eclipse angle of 30.5 + or - 3 deg and the 4-hour transition to and from eclipse suggest an early-type giant or supergiant primary star.

    Description: Evidence is reported for a periodicity of 11.17 (+ or - 0.10) days in the emission from Cygnus X-2. The data were obtained quasi-continuously over a period of more than one year with the Ariel-5 All-Sky Monitor. It is noted that this period is more than an order of magnitude larger than the 0.787-day binary period of Sco X-1 and is not a simple alias of a similarly short period. It is suggested that the 11.17-day modulation might be precessionally induced; otherwise, it would be rather unusual since the Cyg X-2 candidate is assumed to have a low-mass primary and periods in excess of about 2 days are usually associated with high-mass primaries.
