    Notes: Abstract The first preliminary results from the Ariel-5 All-Sky X-Ray Monitor are presented, along with sufficient experiment details to define the experiment sensitivity. Periodic modulation of the X-ray emission is investigated from three sources with which specific periods have been associated, with the results that the 4.8 h variation from Cyg X-3 is confirmed, a long-term average 5.6 day variation from Cyg X-1 is discovered, and no detectable 0.787 day modulation of Sco X-1 is observed. Consistency of the long-term Sco X-1 emission with a ‘shot-noise’ model is discussed, wherein the source behavior is shown to be interpretable as ∼ 100 ‘flares’ per day, each with a duration of several hours. A sudden increase in the Cyg X-1 intensity by almost a factor of three on 22 April, 1975 is reported, after 5 months of relative source constancy. The light curve of a bright nova-like transient source in Triangulum is presented, and compared with previously observed transient sources. Preliminary evidence for the existence of X-ray ‘bursts’ with duration 〈1 h is offered, with the caveat that there is not yet any supporting evidence to guarantee that the effect is truly astronomical.

    Notes: Abstract A model is presented which shows that large numbers of energetic electrons (0.3-〉 10 MeV) and protons (1–30 MeV) can be stored in the solar corona at altitudes around 3 × 105 km for periods in excess of 5 days. Specific reference is made to the time period July 6–16 1968 as an excellent example of energetic solar particle storage. Time histories of interplanetary charged particle intensities observed by the IMP-4 and Pioneer 8 satellites are used to substantiate this contention. Detailed reference is also made to solar X-ray, optical and radio data obtained during the period in question, in addition to interplanetary magnetometer data. This model provides a unique solution to many hitherto unexplained solar particle events, and can also account for the lack of prompt particle emission from certain large solar flares recorded in the past.

    Notes: Abstract We have applied detailed theories of gyro-synchrotron emission and absorption in a magnetoactive plasma, X-ray production by the bremsstrahlung of non-thermal electrons on ambient hydrogen, and electron relaxation in a partially ionized and magnetized gas to the solar flare burst phenomenon. The hard X-ray and microwave bursts are shown to be consistent with a single source of non-thermal electrons, where both emissions arise from electrons with energies 〈 mc 2. Further-more, the experimental X-ray and microwave data allow us to deduce the properties of the electron distribution, and the values of the ambient magnetic field, the hydrogen density, and the size of the emitting region. The proposed model, although derived mostly from observations of the 7 July 1966 flare, is shown to be representative of this type of event.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss the rationale for a semi-permanent all-sky X-ray monitor, and investigate a variety of options for its implementation. We conclude that the Space Station offers an excellent opportunity for hosting such a monitor, and that a set of pinhole cameras can be configured to provide an effective and economical monitor system. A baseline of six independent pinhole modules, each of which requires approximately one cubic foot, 30 pounds, 2 watts, and 100 bits per second, can provide full sky coverage with scientifically interesting sensitivities. No other resources or special accommodation (such as detailed alignment registration, time-tagging or on-orbit servicing) would be required. The baseline system can locate bright sources to a few arc min, and can simultaneously measure each of the several hundred sources in the sky brighter than a few thousandths the intensity of the Crab nebula every day for decades.
