    Notes: Dilute solution properties of copolymers of acrylamide (AM) with N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxybutyl)acrylamide (DAAM) and with N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) have been studied as a function of composition, temperature, time, and added electrolytes sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Unlike the AM-DMAM copolymers, the AM-DAAM copolymers show solution viscosity increases in the presence of added NaCl and CaCl2 and decreases with increasing temperature which are related to copolymer composition. The unusual viscosity behavior of the DAAM-AM copolymers is suspected to be due to chain extension resulting from intramolecular hydrogen bonding and other cooperative associations along the macromolecular backbone.

    Notes: Compositional analyses of random copolymers of acrylamide with sodium-2-sulfoethyl methacrylate and with sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate have been performed utilizing elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and C13 NMR. A mathematical method involving nitrogen to sulfur ratios has been developed to eliminate errors which often arise from associated water in hydrophilic copolymers. The ratios of infrared absorbances at 1043 cm-1 and 1664 cm-1 were used to determine the composition of AM - NaAMPS copolymers; likewise, absorbance ratios at 1040 cm-1 and 3200 cm-1 were utilized for determination of the AM - NaSEM copolymer composition. Carbon-13 NMR spectra of the copolymers were also obtained, and characteristic peaks were utilized to quantitate copolyer composition. The results obtained by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopic studies, and NMR were in excellent agreement. These techniques are of great value for determining composition of hygroscopic copolymers which can crosslink or form strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds, often precluding further characterization.

    Notes: Model graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting acrylamide onto dextran (M̄w = 500,000) utilizing the Fe(II)/H2O2 initiation system. Aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC) was used to determine the effects of changing reaction parameters on hydrodynamic dimensions of the resulting graft copolymers. It was also possible to optimize reaction conditions yielding the highest viscosity graft copolymer with the least amount of homopolyacrylamide and unreacted substrate. The molecular structures of the graft copolymers were determined by elemental analysis, SEC, and solution viscometry. Selective hydrolysis of the dextran backbone allowed determination of average molecular weight of acrylamide grafts, number of grafting sites, and average molecular weight of the graft copolymers. Rheological studies indicated viscosity and pseudoplastic behavior were largely related to the graft length of the polyacrylamide side chains.

    Notes: Dilute solution viscosity of a series of random copolymers of acrylamide (AM) with sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate (NaAMPS) and with sodium-2-sulfoethylmethacrylate (NaSEM) has been studied using a four-bulb shear dilution capillary viscometer. The hydrodynamic volume of the copolymers in aqueous media was determined as a function of salt concentration, temperature, shear rate, and time. A linear relationship was observed between the intrinsic viscosity [η]0 and the reciprocal of the square root of ionic strength in sodium chloride solutions, with salt concentrations varying from 0.043M to 0.257M. Negative temperature coefficients for [η]0 indicate a decrease in the hydrodynamic volume of the ionic polymer molecules with increasing temperature. The relative zero-shear-intrinsic-viscosity change in distilled water to 0.257M sodium chloride aqueous media is used to elucidate viscosity-structure relationships. A maximum value is reached for this parameter at a composition of about 30 mol % of ionic comonomers for AM-NaAMPS and AM-NaSEM copolymer series.

    Notes: Characteristic behavior in the graft copolymerization of acrylamide/N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxybutyl)acrylamide (AM/DAAM) comonomers onto dextran by Ce(IV)-induced initiation was investigated. From a preliminary study, it was found that ceric ammonium nitrate polymerized AM/DAAM comonomer mixtures and diacetone acrylamide, but not acrylamide alone in the aqueous solution. The effect of grafting conditions on the graft copolymerization product was studied with the aid of aqueous size exclusion chromatography and the anthrone reagent. The selectivity of formation of the graft copolymer over random copolymer was found to increase as the reaction temperature and AM/DAAM ratio increased and as both the Ce(IV)/Dextran molar ratio and HNO3 concentration decreased. After establishing optimum grafting conditions, graft copolymer samples were prepared, and their aqueous solution behavior studied as functions of structure, temperature, and added salts.

    Notes: The behavior of N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide more commonly known as diacetone acrylamide (DAAM) polymers and acrylamide/diacetone acrylamide copolymers in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions has been examined. 13C NMR and IR studies do not support the formation of a six-membered hydrogen-bonded ring structure in the DAAM moiety as an explanation of the unusual increase in solution viscosity shown by these copolymers upon addition of salt. A 12-membered hydrogen-bonded structure involving the diacetone acrylamide side chain and an adjacent acrylamide unit is proposed which is consistent with the available data and which would explain the viscosity behavior. Another possible structure involves hydrogen bonding between adjacent comonomers through amide/imine resonance structures. Copolymer microstructure as indicated by calculated pentad and triad frequencies supports either of these proposed structures.

    Notes: Terpolymers of sodium acrylate (NaA), acrylamide (AM), and the zwitterionic monomer 4-(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanedimethylammonio) butanoate (AMPDAB) were prepared by the free radical polymerization in 0.5M NaBr aqueous solution using potassium persulfate as the initiator. The feed ratio of AMPDAB : NaA : AM was varied from 5 : 5 : 90 to 40 : 40 : 20 mol %, with the total monomer concentration held constant at 0.45M. Terpolymer compositions were determined by 13C NMR. Molecular weights varied from 3.0 × 105 to 9.7 × 106 g/mol. All terpolymers were soluble in deionized water and salt solutions at all pH values. The dilute and semidilute solution behavior of the terpolymers was studied as a function of composition, pH, and added electrolytes. Polyelectrolyte behavior was observed for all terpolymers at pH 8.5, as evidenced by high viscosity values at low polymer concentrations and viscosity decrease in the presence of added electrolytes. The reduced viscosity as a function of decreasing pH exhibits a minimum as the terpolymer undergoes a polyanion/polyzwitterion/polycation transition. Comparison of the solution behavior of the terpolymers to terpolymers of 3-(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane dimethylammonio)-1-propane sulfonate (AMPDAPS), AM, and NaA (AADAPS series) as well as copolymers of AMPDAB and AM (AMPDAB series) have been made. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A novel carboxybetaine monomer, 6-(2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropyldimethylammonio) hexanoate (AMPDAH), has been synthesized and copolymerized with acrylamide in an aqueous NaBr solution. The feed ratio of AM (M1): AMPDAB(M2), was varied from 98.5 : 2.5 to 0 : 100 mol %. The polymerizations were carried out to 20-30% conversion. Copolymer compositions were determined with 13C NMR by integration of the amido carbonyl resonances. Reactivity ratios determined from the nonlinear least-squares method gave values of r1 = 0.98 and r2 = 0.85, indicating random incorporation of the comonomers into the final copolymer. Molecular weights ranged from 7.3 to 4.7 × 106 g/mol. The solubility behavior of the copolymers is dependent on the mol % AMPDAH incorporated into the copolymers. When 25 mol % or more is incorporated, the copolymers are only swellable in aqueous media and attempts to solubilize these systems were unsuccessful. AMPDAH incorporation of 10 mol % or less resulted in copolymers soluble in aqueous media under a variety of conditions. The viscometric properties of copolymers with 10 mol % or less is reported as a function of pH and added electrolytes. At high pH in deionized water, the polyzwitterions show both inter- and intramolecular associations, which are disrupted by the addition of sodium chloride. In deionized water, as the pH of the aqueous medium is lowered, the copolymers exhibit dramatic increases in viscosity as the carboxylate groups are protonated and charge-charge repulsions of the quaternary ammonium groups induce polyelectrolyte behavior. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Phase separation and potentiometric studies have also been performed. The AM-NaAMB copolymers exhibit high solution viscosities, good salt tolerance, and moderate viscosity-temperature coefficients. In addition, these copolymers exhibit no phase separation in the presence of divalent cations as is common with many such carboxylated polyelectrolytes. These properties are due to favorable conformations in solution resulting from microstructure and hydrogen bonding effects.
