Notes: Abstract A new universal scaled equation of state for one-component fluids, binary mixtures, and ionic solutions, which represents the thermodynamic behavior of fluids in a wide range of temperatures and densities including the critical region, is proposed. Near the critical point this equation reduces to a theoretically based scaled equation including the leading nonasymptotic (Wegner) correction and a correction accounting for the asymmetry of fluids with respect to the critical isochore. Far away from the critical point the new equation goes over into the classical Landau expansion (van der Waals equation). The new equation is applied to represent experimental P-V-T data for H2O and CO2, as well as to represent C v,x data for dilute aqueous solutions of NaCl. A crossover from fluctuation to mean-field behavior is observed at increased concentrations of NaCl. A universal crossover function for the heat capacity C v,x of one-component fluids and binary mixtures is presented.

Notes: Abstract We present an equation of state for the thermodynamic properties of mixtures of methane and ethane in the critical region that incorporates the crossover from singular thermodynamic behavior near the locus of vapor-liquid critical points to regular thermodynamic behavior outside the critical region. The equation of state yields a satisfactory representation of the thermodynamic-property data for the mixtures in a large range of temperatures and densities.

Notes: Abstract A scaled equation of state is proposed for real fluids in the critical region which incorporates asymmetry with respect to the critical isochore. In the range of reduced densities 0.65⩽(θ/θ c)⩽1.4 and for reduced temperatures (T/T c)⩽1.2, the equation represents P-V-T data for steam within the experimental accuracy.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of the isomorphism of critical phenomena, the behavior of transport properties of binary mixtures in the vicinity of the vapor-liquid critical line is considered. In particular, the renormalization of the singularity of the thermal conductivity in dilute critical solutions has been analyzed in detail. It is shown that the behavior of the thermal conductivity is determined by the “critical background,” i.e., the fluctuation-induced regular part, which diverges at the critical point of a solvent.

Notes: Abstract The behavior of the transport coefficients related to diffusion, heat conduction, and their cross-processes in fluid mixtures near the consolute point and the liquid-vapor critical line is investigated. Simple crossover equations for the critical enhancement of those coefficients are developed by incorporating a finite cutoff and time-dependent correlation functions of the order parameter and of the entropy into decoupled-mode theory integrals. It is shown that the thermal conductivity of a binary mixture is nondivergent and the crossover from the critical background in the critical point to the regular background far from the critical point is elucidated. The crossover to the behavior of the thermal conductivity in the one-component limit is also discussed.

Notes: Summary A molecular-statistical calculation of the retention volumes at zero sample size on graphitized thermal carbon black is carried out for quasi-rigid molecules of fluorene, indene, 1-methylindene, 2-methylindene and three dimethylindenes. A reasonable agreement is observed between the calculated and the available experimental gas chromatographic data. The potential barrier to internal rotation and the torsional angle in styrene molecules are estimated by comparing theoretically calculated and measured retention volumes.

Notes: Summary Due to their high efficiency capillary columns packed with graphitized thermal carbon black (GTCB) permit to realize high selectivity in the chromatographic separation of isomers on the flat surface of this adsorbent. However, the increase in the efficiency is connected to a considerable increase of the pressure drop across the column which hinders the determination of the thermo-dynamic adsorption characteristics. The optimum conditions for the preparation of such columns designed both for analytical purposes and for thermodynamic measurements of the individual isomers have been established. The retention volumes for small (zero) sample size (Henry constants for adsorption on GTCB) of six isomers of tricyclo(8,4,0,02,7)tetradecane (perhydrophenanthrene), seven isomers of tricyclo-(7,4,0,02,6)tridecane (1,2-cyclopentanodecalin) and six isomers of tricyclo(7,3,0,02,6)dodecane have been determined. The Henry constants increase with the flattening of the isomeric molecules in these hydrocarbon series. A qualitative procedure of identification of the isomers on the basis of optimum orientation of their molecules on a flat surface has been considered.
