    Notes: In vitro antioxidant and antimutagenic activity of dietary chlorophyll derivatives was assessed. Antioxidant activity was determined by the ability of each compound to scavenge the long-lived free radicals 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS+). Antimutagenic activity was assayed with a modified microscreen bacterial reverse mutagenicity assay using Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and benzo[a]pyrene as the tester strain and mutagen respectively. Derivatives of chlorophyll a were found to be more effective radical quenchers than those of chlorophyll b. Furthermore, metal-free derivatives such as chlorins, pheophytins, and pyropheophytins exhibited significantly lower antiradical capacity than metallo-derivatives such as Mg-chlorophylls, Zn-pheophytins, Zn-pyropheophytins, Cu-pheophytina, andCu-chlorophyllins. Both metal-free and metallo-chlorophyll derivatives demonstrated similar dose-dependent inhibitory activity against B[a]P induced mutagenesis. These results demonstrate that dietary chlorophyll derivatives prevalent in both fresh and processed foods and dietary supplements have antioxidant and antimutagenic activities.

    Notes: : After a 2-wk depletion period, 24 volunteers, divided into 3 groups, ingested 5 mg/d lycopene for 4-wk from 5 capsules containing tomato oleoresin or synthetic lycopene. Plasma samples were analyzed on carotenoids using C18 HPLC with diode array detection. Basal lycopene levels (0.19 to 0.31 μmol/L) in plasma of the 3 groups were in a comparable range (p 〉 0.05) and significantly decreased after the 2-wk diet low in lycopene to 21 to 52 % of the basal values. Four out of 5 investigated capsules significantly (p 〈 0.05) enhanced the plasma lycopene levels relative to the depleted state after 1 wk of supplementation to 0.20 to 0.27 μmol/L. Increasing the surface of lycopene crystals by reducing the particle size was the most effective processing step to enhance intestinal absorption of lycopene. However, presence of tomato oil in oleoresin and partly removal of selective fatty acids affected the intestinal absorption of lycopene, too.

    Notes: The solutions of traveltime inversion problems are often not unique because of the poor match between the raypath distribution and the tomographic grid. However, by adapting the local resolution iteratively, by means of a singular value analysis of the tomographic matrix, we can reduce or eliminate the null space influence on our earth image: in this way, we get a much more reliable estimate of the velocity field of seismic waves. We describe an algorithm for an automatic regridding, able to fit the local resolution to the available raypaths, which is based on Delaunay triangulation and Voronoi tessellation. It increases the local pixel density where the null space energy is low or the velocity gradient is large, and reduces it elsewhere. Consequently, the tomographic image can reveal the boundaries of complex objects, but is not affected by the ambiguities that occur when the grid resolution is not adequately supported by the available raypaths.

    Notes: We report on temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements and secondary ion mass spectroscopy on unintentionally doped, n-type conducting GaN epitaxial films. Over a wide range of free carrier concentrations we find a good correlation between the Hall measurements and the atomic oxygen concentration. We observe an increase of the oxygen concentration close to the interface between the film and the sapphire substrate, which is typical for the growth technique used (synthesis from galliumtrichloride and ammonia). It produces a degenerate n-type layer of (approximate)1.5 μm thickness and results in a temperature-independent mobility and Hall concentration at low temperatures (〈50 K). The gradient in free carrier concentration can also be seen in spatially resolved Raman and cathodoluminescence experiments. Based on the temperature dependence of the Hall-effect, Fourier transform infrared absorption experiments, and photoluminescence we come to the conclusion that oxygen produces a shallow donor level with a binding energy comparable to the shallow Si donor. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on inelastic light scattering on self-assembled In(Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots. Phonon modes are investigated in backscattering from (001) surface and (110) cleaved edge both in polarized and depolarized geometry. One relatively broad phonon signal is observed which is attributed to optical phonon modes in and around the In(Ga)As quantum dots. The Raman selection rules are similar to the bulk material. Additionally, a broad peak is observed around 50 meV under resonance conditions which is attributed to electronic interlevel transitions in the n-doped In(Ga)As quantum dots. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report continuous-wave (cw) room-temperature operation of electrically pumped AlGaAs/GaAs microcylinder lasers using self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) as the active material. The threshold currents are lower than those of similar devices with an InGaAs quantum well fabricated for comparison. This is discussed in terms of nonradiative surface recombination at the sidewall of the resonator which has less influence in the case of the QD devices since the lateral carrier confinement suppresses lateral carrier diffusion. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A significantly improved InP-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with record device performance is demonstrated. Utilizing a twofold epitaxial growth process, self-adjusted lateral current confinement and index guiding are accomplished by means of a buried InGa(Al)As tunnel junction. Front and back mirrors are realized by 35 epitaxial InGaAlAs/InAlAs layer pairs and a 1.5 MgF2/a-Si layer pair, respectively. At room temperature and under continuous wave condition, lasers with small aperture diameters of only 13 μm exhibit record output powers of 1.6 mW with quantum efficiencies around 25%. For these devices, threshold current and voltage are as low as 4 mA and 1.2 V, respectively, because of low series resistances around 70 Ω. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
