Description: The book depicts the ideological foundations and political practice of pan-German student fraternities (Burschenschaften) in Austria after 1945. The Burschenschaften’s post-war volkish (German) nationalism and interwovenness with the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) receive particular attention.

Notes: We report results from a detailed study of photoconduction in C60 films. At low temperatures the photoaction spectra show vibrational coupling to the first electronic transition, indicating that the generation of mobile carriers in the solid involves molecular excitation schemes. The lowest energy transition is found to occur at photon energies of ∼1.8 eV. Below this energy, only weak and field-dependent photoresponse is observed. We attribute this to a tail of localized states related to defects in the film. The edge between localized and extended states approximately coincides with the first vibronic peak. From this peak we find the photoconduction edge of the film to be 1.81±0.01 eV at room temperature in the face-centered-cubic phase and 1.85±0.01 eV in the simple cubic phase below ∼200 K.

Notes: The photoluminescence of CuInS2 thin films and solar cells is investigated as a function of postdeposition treatments for different temperatures and excitation intensities. Annealing in hydrogen atmosphere causes an increase of PL intensity at 1.445 eV by more than a factor of 100, while subsequent annealing in oxygen or air ambient passivates this transition, which is ascribed to a donor-acceptor pair recombination between a sulphur vacancy and a copper vacancy. A defect mechanism is suggested that assumes the passivation of sulphur vacancies by oxygen in grain surfaces which can be activated by hydrogen annealing. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Most genetic diseases are complex, i.e. associated to combinations of SNPs rather than individual SNPs. In the last few years, this topic has often been addressed in terms of SNP-SNP interaction patterns given as expressions linked by logical operators. Methods for multiple testing in high-dimensional settings can be applied when many SNPs are considered simultaneously. However, another less well-known multiple testing problem arises within a fixed subset of SNPs when the logic expression is chosen optimally. In this article, we propose a general asymptotic approach for deriving the distribution of the maximally selected chi-square statistic in various situations. We show how this result can be used for testing logic expressions - in particular SNP-SNP interaction patterns - while controlling for multiple comparisons. Simulations show that our method provides multiple testing adjustments when the logic expression is chosen such as to maximize the statistic. Its benefit is demonstrated through an application to a real dataset from a large population-based study considering allergy and asthma in KORA. An implementation of our method is available from the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) as R package 'SNPmaxsel'.

Notes: [Auszug] It has now been found that a similar recrystalliza-tion can be effected by 'mercerization'. Four different rayon fibres were soaked in 18 per cent caustic soda solution at room temperature for 10 min., freed from lye by pressing between filter paper, and put into a large quantity of boiling water ...

Notes: [Auszug] Quasars are the visible signatures of gas falling into the deep potential well of super-massive black holes in the centres of distant galaxies. It has been suggested that quasars are formed when two massive galaxies collide and merge, leading to the prediction that quasars should be found in ...

Notes: [Auszug] The quantum mechanical description of a radiation field is based on states that are characterized by the number of photons in a particular mode; the most basic quantum states are those with fixed photon number, usually referred to as number (or Fock) states. Although Fock states of vibrational ...
