Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Home / Earth, Space & Environmental Sciences / Geology & Geophysics / Geology & Geophysics Extreme Events: Observations, Modeling, and Economics Mario Chavez (Editor), Michael Ghil (Editor), Jaime Urrutia-Fucugauchi (Editor) ISBN: 978-1-119-15701-4 438 pages March 2016, Wiley-Blackwell Extreme Events: Observations, Modeling, and Economics (1119157013) cover image Read an Excerpt Description The monograph covers the fundamentals and the consequences of extreme geophysical phenomena like asteroid impacts, climatic change, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, flooding, and space weather. This monograph also addresses their associated, local and worldwide socio-economic impacts. The understanding and modeling of these phenomena is critical to the development of timely worldwide strategies for the prediction of natural and anthropogenic extreme events, in order to mitigate their adverse consequences. This monograph is unique in as much as it is dedicated to recent theoretical, numerical and empirical developments that aim to improve: (i) the understanding, modeling and prediction of extreme events in the geosciences, and, (ii) the quantitative evaluation of their economic consequences. The emphasis is on coupled, integrative assessment of the physical phenomena and their socio-economic impacts. With its overarching theme, Extreme Events: Observations, Modeling and Economics will be relevant to and become an important tool for researchers and practitioners in the fields of hazard and risk analysis in general, as well as to those with a special interest in climate change, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, seismo-tectonics, hydrology, and space weather.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Advances in Nonlinear Geosciences is a set of contributions from the participants of “30 Years of Nonlinear Dynamics” held July 3-8, 2016 in Rhodes, Greece as part of the Aegean Conferences, as well as from several other experts in the field who could not attend the meeting. The volume brings together up-to-date research from the atmospheric sciences, hydrology, geology, and other areas of geosciences and presents the new advances made in the last 10 years. Topics include chaos synchronization, topological data analysis, new insights on fractals, multifractals and stochasticity, climate dynamics, extreme events, complexity, and causality, among other topics.

Notizen: In this study, muscle-derived stem cell (MDSC)/Pluronics/polycaprolactone (PCL)microparticle hybrid mixture was prepared as a potential injectable urethral bulking agent for thetreatment of urinary incontinence. The MDSCs were isolated from the gastrocnemius muscles ofSD rats by a modified preplate method and characterized through FACS analysis using variousprimary antibodies (CD34, Sca-1, CD45 and desmin). The hybrid mixture was prepared by themixing of PCL microparticles (diameter, 100~200 μm) and MDSCs-containing thermo-sensitivePluronic (F127/F68 mixture) solution (4.5/5.5, w/v). The hybrid mixture was easily injectedthrough 18G needle into the body and stably remained in the applied site without initial volumedecrease, owing to a well-packed structure of PCL particles exhibited in the hybrid mixture. It wasobserved that the MDSCs were stably grown in the hybrid mixture without severe inflammation andimmune reaction. From the results, we recognized that the hybrid mixture can be a good candidateas an injectable bulking agent for the treatment of urinary incontinence, due to their goodinjectability, volume retention and biocompatibility

Notizen: [Auszug] Protein phosphorylation is estimated to affect 30% of the proteome and is a major regulatory mechanism that controls many basic cellular processes. Until recently, our biochemical understanding of protein phosphorylation on a global scale has been extremely limited; only one half of the yeast ...

Notizen: A stability analysis based on Arnol'd–Lyapunov arguments in a gauge-variable formalism is applied to a generalized form of propagating modons. The method was previously applied to the special case of Stern's modon in a quiescent background flow. The analysis presented here shows that propagating-modon solutions in the shallow-water equations are stable to small-amplitude perturbations, regardless of the sign of their translational speed, as long as this is much smaller in magnitude than the solid-rotation speed of the Earth. Sufficient conditions for stability are that the given flow be quasigeostrophic, i.e., that the Rossby number be small, and that the associated Froude number be one order of magnitude smaller than the Rossby number.

Notizen: A physical explanation is provided for the difference between the authors' stability criterion, valid in the shallow-water equations, and earlier criteria for the quasigeostrophic potential vorticity equation. Given this difference, a counterexample of P. Ripa [Phys. Fluids A 4, (square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid) (1992)] for the authors' criterion applied to the latter equation is shown to be irrelevant for the former system. This raises interesting questions as to the reliability of the quasigeostrophic approximation in studying stability of planetary flows.
