    Notes: Abstract We surveyed patterns of allelic variation within twelve samples of the pipi Donax deltoides Lamarck from beaches separated by up to 1200 km but connected to varying degrees by the East Australian Current. We used these data to test the prediction that the irregular patterns of water movement would cause genetic differentiation in pipis, so that there would be more genetic variation within and among the more southern regions than the northern regions. We found that six loci were at least moderately variable within all samples, and there were no clear geographic patterns in allelic frequencies. In general, genotype frequencies within samples were consistent with predictions for an outcrossed, sexually reproducing species, and we detected no evidence of population subdivision. Within samples, with the exception of the peptidase loci, single-locus genotype frequencies were in close agreement with expectations for Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. We observed no significant linkage disequilibrium for any pairwise comparison of loci in any sample. Our hierarchical analysis of genetic variation revealed little variation among all samples (F st = 0.009). Loci showed consistently low levels of subdivision (F st from 0.003 to 0.018). We found almost no variation among the four geographic regions sampled (F rt = 0.001). All variation was therefore attributable to variation among samples within regions (F sr = 0.010). These data imply that larvae are moving between regions and that levels of present or recent gene flow are high, and support the conclusions of other studies which have inferred widespread gene flow for animals dispersing via planktonic, outcrossed larvae in parts of this region. This implies that the East Australian Current is sufficient to produce strong larval connections despite its intermittent nature. If existing levels of population subdivision reflect current levels of gene flow, then these data imply that D. deltoides represents a single fishery on the east coast of Australia.

    Notes: Abstract Benthic organisms can significantly alter the physical properties of marine sediments, but it has hitherto been difficult to assess and quantify the effects of bioturbation. In situ geophysical techniques offer new methods for measuring these effects: measurement of acoustic shear-wave velocity and electrical resistivity allows nondestructive assessment of the properties of the grain framework and pore-fluid matrix, respectively, of the seabed sediment. The influence of burrowing invertebrates on the structural properties of sandy sediments at intertidal locations on the coast of Wales (UK) was investigated during the periol 1986–1987 using these techniques. Three species (Arenicola marina, Corophium arenarium and Lanice conchilega) were selected on the basis of their contrasting styles of burrow construction. All three species produced measurable and significant, although different, changes in bed properties. They modified shear-wave propagation through the bed by changing bed rigidity: while A. marina and C. arenarium decreased rigidity by creating open burrows, L. conchilega increased rigidity by building shell-lined tubes. All produced a decrease in electrical resistivity by altering porosity and/or tortuosity, which implies an increase in permeability; these changes were attributable not only to the presence of the burrows but also to modification of the between-burrow sediment texture and bed properties.

    Notes: Recent hardware improvements on the hard x-ray camera of the Princeton Beta Experiment-Modified (PBX-M) expand the capabilities for observing bremsstrahlung radiation from fast electrons during lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) experiments, thereby allowing accurate fast electron transport studies. Developed methods to directly invert two-dimensional x-ray images reveal radial profiles of the emitted intensity and isotropy. Such profiles extracted from lower hybrid (LH) modulation experiments permit computation of the lower hybrid power absorption profile. Results from application to the LH phase scans demonstrate the ability to control the peak location of the driven current. Incorporating these results into simulations using both a three-dimensional Fokker–Planck code and a simple modulation model provides lower and upper bound estimates for the hot electron diffusion coefficient D*. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced composites leads to large stress concentrations around pin-loaded holes through standard weave cloths. Proper understanding of how this anisotropic nature affects the load distribution around holes can be utilised to reduce these concentrations if sufficient thought is given to the internal fibre geometry near to the hole. Such local reinforcements need not be highly complex and can be readily produced without excessive effort, producing significant improvements in performance.

    Notes: Abstract A variational formulation for the net force on the nose of a rigid projectile normally penetrating a compliant target is given. Frictional effects are negligible in this formulation. The variational problem is solved and the result compared to several popular nose geometries. For blunt tipped projectiles, the optimal geometry can significantly enhance penetration by reducing the net force of resistance. For long penetrator noses, the effect has much less value. The most interesting conclusion is that all the optimal geometries have blunt tips.
