Notes: Abstract Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations ofγ-Al2O3, using a pairwise additive interaction potential of Pauling's type with four different radii for aluminum atoms, were analysed in order to determine the influence of the radius on the modification of coordination numbers of A1 relative to the ideal structure, at two different temperatures of 300 and 1500 K. It is found that the best choice is the radius of penta-coordinated aluminum, reproducing structural and vibrational properties of the compound in excellent agreement with experimentally observed properties.

    Keywords: carbonate determination ; uranyl quinolin-8-olate ; benzyltributyl-ammonium ; ligand exchange ; spectrophotometry

    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Abstract An indirect Spectrophotometric determination of carbonate is proposed. Dilute chloroform solutions of uranyl quinolin-8-olate are shaken with aqueous solutions of anion. The decoloration produced by ligand exchange varies linearly with the anion concentration. The addition of an ethanolic solution of benzyltributylammonium bromide to the organic solution instead of an excess of quinolin-8-ol improves the method. Different variables (pH, shaking time, ionic medium) were optimized. Carbonate concentration can be determined over the range 10–40 μg ml−1, showing a linear dependence, giving a precision of 2.4% for 30 μg ml−1 of carbonate in the aqueous phase. The tolerance levels of foreign ions are increased. Analysis of carbonate in mineral and sea waters and pharmaceutical samples was performed with success.

Keywords: phosphate ; UV-vis spectrophotometry ; ligand exchange extraction ; urine
Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Abstract A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of phosphate in urine is proposed, based on the ligand exchange extraction produced by phosphate solution at pH 7.5 when it is shaken with a solution of Fe(III) indole-2-carboxylate iniso-amyl alcohol. The organic layer decoloration is measured at 400 nm and the phosphate indirectly determined. The sensitivity of the method is 1.07 × 103 1 mol−1 cm−1, the linear working range 1–15 × 10−5 mol/l of phosphate and the relative standard deviation 5%. It does not require previous treatment of the sample and it is free from interferences by other normal or pathological constituents of the urine samples. The results agreed closely with those obtained by using a Sigma Diagnostics procedure for inorganic phosphorus, based on the Fiske-SubbaRow method. The method does not require special instrumentation and is not expensive.

Notes: Abstract Macrobial colonization of the different support materials used to enhance methane production in anaerobic digestors is rapid and occurs in the first 24 h of sludge incubation. Scanning electron microscopy studies reveal a predominant presence of filamentous methanogenic forms, closely resemblingMethanosaeta (Methanothrix), which are located on the outer layer and in the bacterial framework of the biofilm. These findings are consistent with the results obtained from microbial counts using both the most probable number and epifluorescence microscopic techniques, which show an increase in the numbers of aceticlastic methanogens compared to other microbial groups involved, such as sulphate-reducing bacteria, the numbers of which are similar to those obtained under the initial conditions. Moreover, a sharp increase in the bacterial counts is observed by using the epifluorescence microscopic technique applied to homogenized samples, probably due to the count of bacteria released from the support materials.

Notes: Abstract Homoveratric acid (HVA) degradation was observed in cultures of Pleurotus eryngii lacking lignin peroxidase (LiP) activity. Extracellular enzymes seemed responsible for this transformation, and the lack of activity after ultrafiltration of the culture liquid suggests that the presence of some low-molecular-size compounds is required. This hypothesis is supported by rapid HVA transformation after addition of the synthetic laccase substrate 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) to the ultrafiltered liquid. HVA transformation by the extracellular enzymes from P. eryngii takes place via Cα-Cβ breakdown and formation of veratryl alcohol, which is further transformed into veratraldehyde. The same major compounds were found during HVA transformation by LiP from Phanerochaete chrysosporium, but this reaction was not stimulated by ABTS. Although the involvement of other enzymes cannot be ruled out, purified laccase from Pleurotus eryngii caused the same HVA transformation pattern in presence of ABTS. Moreover, veratryl alcohol oxidation by P. eryngii laccase was demonstrated in the presence of ABTS. These results suggest that enzymatic systems lacking LiP could be responsible for natural degradation of lignin.

Notes: Abstract During intermittent cyclical etidronate treatment, a lower extremity pain syndrome associated with stress fractures was observed in three osteoporotic patients. This report describes the development of stress fractures during initial cycles of treatment, with recurrence of symptoms in two patients when etidronate therapy was resumed. Further studies are needed to confirm whether stress fractures are associated with cyclic etidronate treatment and if so, the incidence and pathophysiology need to be determined.
