    Notes: Abstract The intercalation compounds of trimethylphosphate (TMP) in graphite oxide (GO) have been synthezized. Two compounds have been characterized, corresponding to intercalation of one or two molecules of TMP, and have been characterized by gravimetric adsorption, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Bonding between TMP and graphitic oxide takes place through hydrogen bonding with OH groups of the layered material.

    Notes: Abstract. A beautifully simple model introduced a couple of decades ago, Toom’s cellular automaton, revealed that non-equilibrium systems may exhibit generic bistability, i.e. two-phase coexistence over a finite area of the (two-dimensional) phase diagram, in violation of the equilibrium Gibbs phase rule. In this paper we analyse two interfacial models, describing more realistic situations, that share with Toom’s model a phase diagram with a broad region of phase coexistence. An analysis of the interfacial models yields conditions for generic bistability in terms of physically relevant parameters that may be controlled experimentally.

    Notes: Abstract. A two-offspring branching annihilating random walk model, with finite reaction rates, is studied in one-dimension. The model exhibits a transition from an active to an absorbing phase, expected to belong to the DP2 universality class embracing systems that possess two symmetric absorbing states, which in one-dimensional systems, is in many cases equivalent to parity conservation. The phase transition is studied analytically through a mean-field like modification of the so-called parity interval method. The original method of parity intervals allows for an exact analysis of the diffusion-controlled limit of infinite reaction rate, where there is no active phase and hence no phase transition. For finite rates, we obtain a surprisingly good description of the transition which compares favorably with the outcome of Monte Carlo simulations. This provides one of the first analytical attempts to deal with the broadly studied DP2 universality class.

    Notes: Abstract Macrobial colonization of the different support materials used to enhance methane production in anaerobic digestors is rapid and occurs in the first 24 h of sludge incubation. Scanning electron microscopy studies reveal a predominant presence of filamentous methanogenic forms, closely resemblingMethanosaeta (Methanothrix), which are located on the outer layer and in the bacterial framework of the biofilm. These findings are consistent with the results obtained from microbial counts using both the most probable number and epifluorescence microscopic techniques, which show an increase in the numbers of aceticlastic methanogens compared to other microbial groups involved, such as sulphate-reducing bacteria, the numbers of which are similar to those obtained under the initial conditions. Moreover, a sharp increase in the bacterial counts is observed by using the epifluorescence microscopic technique applied to homogenized samples, probably due to the count of bacteria released from the support materials.

    Notes: Abstract The process of retention of ethyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate (EOCPC) by samples of natural bentonite containing Gador montmorillonite has been studied. Firstly, the adsorbent and the adsorbate were studied by different techniques. Intercalation compounds between them were prepared by two different methods: imbibition at room temperature and reflux heating at 60°C. The compounds obtained by both treatments were characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

    Notes: Summary Potassium tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate, [K][Ph 2P(O)NP(O)Ph 2], reacts with 18-crown-6 ether to give the monohydrated complex [K(18-crown-6][Ph 2P(O)NP(O)Ph 2]·H2O. The compound shows an interaction potassium-oxygen, forming an inorganic (carbon free) chelate ring and it is different to the sulphur homolog which has no interaction cation-anion.

    Notes: Abstract Critical properties of systems exhibiting phase transitions into phases with infinite numbers of absorbing states are studied. We analyze a non-Markovian Langevin equation recently proposed to describe the critical behavior of such systems, and also introduce and study a non-Markovian discrete model, which is argued to present the same critical features. On the basis of mean-field analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, and theoretical arguments, we conclude that the phenomenology of the non-Markovian models closely parallels that of systems with many absorbing states in one and two dimensions. The “bulk” or “static” critical properties of these systems fall in the directed percolation (DP) universality class. By contrast, the critical properties associated with the spread of an initially localized seed exhibit a more complex behavior: Depending on parameter values they can, both in one and two dimensions, fall either in the dynamical percolation or DP universality class, or else exhibit apparently nonuniversal exponents. In contrast to previous results, however, the nonuniversal exponents in 2D are found to satisfy a scaling law which implies that a particular linear combination of them is universal and assumes DP values. These results demonstrate the efficacy of the non-Markovian approach for understanding systems with many absorbing states, which are difficult to analyze in their original microscopic formulation.
