    Beschreibung: In the months following the April 6th, 2009, L’Aquila earthquake, several Italian and foreign research institutions installed dozens of seismic stations to monitor more than 100 localities with the aim of studying the local site effects in the epicentral area (upper and middle Aterno valley). The stations (accelerometers and velocimeters) have been deployed inside or very close to the inhabited areas. Among the investigated sites there are Onna, where almost the totality of the buildings collapsed, and the historic centre of L’Aquila, both towns suffering many casualties. The preliminary results for the examined sites show an extreme variability of ground motion and significant amplification for the most damaged localities.

    Beschreibung: Within the Italian Project S3 (DPC-INGV) “Shaking seismic scenarios in area of strategic and/or priority interest” the urban area of Gubbio has been chosen as a test site for the calculation of ground shaking scenarios for forecasting purposes. The area has been selected because the urban and / or geomorphologic characteristics of the town of Gubbio and its surrounding are good representatives of many areas in Central Italy: an historical centre of high cultural and artistic value founded on a rocky hillside with new residential and industrial areas developed on the alluvial plain. A great deal of effort has been put in the seismic characterisation of the Gubbio basin, since the general purpose of this work has been the quantification of site effects in intra-mountain basins. Recent studies have shown in fact that significant site effects take place in the Eugubina plain, as evidenced by the generation of surface waves. In particular, the strong motions recorded at the accelerometric station GPB, belonging to the RAN (Rete accelerometrica italiana), installed within the alluvial basin, shows strong amplification and lengthening of significant duration respect to rock sites (Pacor et al; 2007). Several investigations with active and passive seismic survey techniques have been planned and carried out in the plain, also favoured by the intense seismic activity typical of the area (see PS3-Deliverable 21). All data are collected in a GIS herewith enclosed (section 7). The estimates of the empirical transfer functions in the basin have been related to the monitoring activities of 4 temporary transects of seismometric stations (Figure 1.1), operating between June 2005 and May 2006 and described in this Deliverable. The velocemetric records are collected in PS3-Deliverable D26 The amplitude transfer functions for sites corresponding to the stations installed in the basin have been determined by applying three different methods, namely the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (H/V), the standard spectral ratio (SSR) and the generalized inversion technique (GIT).

    Beschreibung: In the last decades, researchers focused their attention on using inverse analysis of empirical surface‐waves dispersion curves from microtremor measurements since it allows to keep the cost of investigation relatively low and to avoid the use of active sources that might be prohibitive in urban areas. In this study we reports the results and interpretations of the passive measurements carried out at a test site in Bevagna (Italy) near the BVG station of the Italian Accelerometric Network (RAN) within the framework of the DPC‐INGV S4 Project (2007‐2009). Using two independent approaches, Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion characteristics were reproduced through two different inversion methods. At this site a cross‐hole test made nearby the seismic station offers the opportunity to compare the subsoil velocity profiles derived by seismic noise array data with independent geophysical information. The results obtained from the separated Love waves and Rayleigh wave inversions analyses showed that the two procedure provide consistent shear wave velocity profiles for the shallow part of the model in good agreement with the results of the nearby cross‐hole test. This case history shows the capabilities of surface wave analyses from passive source to adequately retrieve the S‐wave subsoil structure and suggests that more efforts should be devoted in exploiting the potential of coupled analysis of Rayleigh and Love waves from microtremor array measurements for site characterization.

    Beschreibung: Kyrgyzstan, which is located in the collision zone between the Eurasian and Indo-Australian lithosphere plates, is prone to large earthquakes as shown by its historical seismicity. Hence, an increase in the knowledge and awareness by local authorities and decision makers of the possible consequence of a large earthquake, based on improved seismic hazard assessments and realistic earthquake risk scenarios, is mandatory to mitigate the effects of an earthquake. To this regard, the Central Asia Cross-Border Natural Disaster Prevention (CASCADE) project aims to install a cross- border seismological and strong motion network in Central Asia and to support microzonation activities for the capitals of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. During the first phase of the project, a temporary seismological network of 19 stations was installed in the city of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Moreover, single-station noise recordings were collected at nearly 200 sites. In this study, the site amplifications occurring in Bishkek are assessed by analyzing 56 earthquakes extracted from the data streams continuously acquired by the network, as well as from the single-station noise measurements. A broadband amplification (starting at ∼0:1 and 0.2 Hz), is shown by the standard spectral ratio (SSR) results of the stations located within the basin. The reliability of the observed low-frequency amplification was validated through a time–frequency analysis of denoised seismograms. Discrepancies between horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio and SSR results are due to the large amplification of the vertical component of ground motion, probably due to the effect of converted waves. The single-station noise results, once their reliability was assessed by their comparison with the earthquake data, have been used to produce the first fundamental resonance frequency map for Bishkek, whose spatial variation shows a good agreement with the presence of an impedance contrast within the Tertiary sedimentary cover.

    Beschreibung: A temporary network of 33 seismic stations was deployed in the area struck by the 6th April 2009, Mw 6.3, L’Aquila earthquake (central Italy), with the aim to investigate the site amplification within the Aterno river Valley. The seismograms of 18 earthquakes recorded by 14 of the 33 stations were used to evaluate the average horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) for each site and the standard horizontal spectral ratio (SSR) between a site and a reference station. The obtained results have been compared to the geological and geophysical information in order to explain the resonance frequencies and the amplification levels with respect to surface geology of the valley. The result indicate that there is no uniform pattern of amplification, due to the complex geologic setting, as the thickness and degree of cementation of the deposits is highly variable. As consequence, a large number of the local site response is observed, therefore it is very difficult to elaborate a unique model that can explain such a variability of the amplification.
