Beschreibung: Comparison between past changes in pollen assemblages and stable isotope ratios (deuterium and carbon) analyzed in the same peat core from Tierra del Fuego at latitude 55°S permitted identification of the relative contribution of precipitation versus temperature responsible for the respective change. Major steps in the sequence of paleoenvironmental changes, such as at 12700, 9000, 5000, and 4000 years ago are apparently related only to increase in precipitation, reflecting the latitudinal location and intensity of the westerly storm tracks. On the other hand, high paleoenvironmental variability, which is characteristic for the late-glacial and the latest Holocene, is related to temperature variability, which affects the relative moisture content. Comparison with other paleoenvironmental records suggests that the late-glacial temperature variability is probably related to variability in the extent of Antarctic sea-ice, which in turn appears to be related to the intensity of Atlantic deep-water circulation. Temperature variability during the latest Holocene, on the other hand, is probably related to the dynamics of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation.

Notizen: A novel bicyclic oxalactam 2-oxa-5-azabicyclo [2.2.21 octan-6-one (2,5-BOL) was synthesized from sodium 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxylate through a seven-step reaction sequence. Anionic ring-opening polymerization of 2,5-BOL was carried out in bulk at 12OOC or in dimethyl sulfoxide at 40, 60, and 80°C by using potassium pyrrolidonate and the N-benzoyl derivative of 2,5-BOL as catalyst and activator, respectively. The polymerization gave a new polyamide containing cis- and trans-2,5-linked tetrahydropyran rings in the main chain. The cis/trans ratio varied from 70/30 to 95 /5 depending on the reaction conditions. The polyamide having number average molecular weights of 3000-8000 was soluble in a variety of solvents including methanol, ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, chloroform, and dichloromethane. It began to decompose at 280-32OOC depending on the compositions of the cis- and trans-2,5-linked structural units. The anionic ring-opening polymerizability of 2,5-BOL was found to be much lower than its structural isomer, 8-oxa-6-azabicyclo[ 3.2.11 octan-7-one (8,6-BOL).

Notizen: Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto sisal fibers (chemically modified) was studied using the Mn(III)/EDTA redox system in aqueous solution. The effects of time, monomer (AN), metal ion [Mn(III)] substrate [ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)], temperature, and acid concentration on graft yield have been studied. The effects of thiourea on the graft yield has also been studied. A suitable mechanism is proposed.

Notizen: Metal ion specific template ligand sites were developed by physically immobilizing dithizone molecules oriented according to a particular complex geometry in various polymeric films. Four polymeric systems, polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl chloride), and polycarbonate, were used for making template sites for Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, and Co2+ ions. A high degree of specificity could be achieved independent of stability constants, though about half of the ligand sites were unavailable to the metal ions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: A new acetylene-terminated Schiff base monomer, N,N′-(1,4-phenylenedimethylidyne)-bis-(4-ethynylaniline) (PPP), was synthesized and was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. This monomer was then polymerized to yield a new polymer (PPPP) with alternating units of aromatic imine and diacetylene via an oxidative coupling polymerization of the acetylenic terminal groups. The monomer was also polymerized by thermal curing at elevated temperatures up to 400°C to afford a crosslinked polymer network without significant structural decomposition. Thermal properties and thermal reactions of the monomer and the polymers were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The polymers exhibit excellent thermal stabilities in an inert atmosphere. Electronic properties of the polymers are also discussed.

Notizen: Monomer transport and polymerization kinetics are two key phenomena in olefin polymerization with heterogeneous transition metal catalysts. To have a better understanding of these interrelated kinetics and diffusion phenomena, a quantitative calculation of the monomer diffusion directly from experimental study is essential. In this work, a novel temperature-perturbation technique is developed to systematically study the kinetic and diffusion limitations in catalyzed gas phase olefin polymerization. A physical model of the particle growth mechanism as well as its mathematical representation is presented and the diffusion limitations occurring in the system at high temperature are characterized and quantitatively analyzed. Finally, the practical implications of the results of this study on the operation of industrial scale polyolefin reactors are examined. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: This study focuses on the kinetics of ethylene/propylene (homo/co) polymerization reactions using a high activity TiCl4/MgCl2/AlEt3 catalyst. The reactor system is a gas phase reactor equipped with an on-line composition control scheme. As such, important kinetic data such as the instantaneous reaction rate of each monomer is readily obtained. In the investigation, experiments are performed to study the effects of comonomer composition variations, temperature variations, hydrogen concentration variations, and variations in the Al/Ti ratio. It is observed that the ethylene and propylene instantaneous reaction rates show a rather peculiar pattern with the appearance of a second peak. Our work linked the existence of this peak to the Al/Ti ratio used. A theory based on the oxidation state change is proposed. This theory is also used to explain the effects of temperature changes and hydrogen concentration changes on the system. A variety of analytical techniques are employed to study the polymer properties and evidence is provided to support the existence of polymer partial melting at relatively high reaction temperatures. The resulting diffusion limitation is believed to be partially responsible for the observed activity decrease at such elevated temperatures. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: A comparative evaluation of triphenylphosphine-polyhalocompound-activated polycondensation of amino carboxylic acid as well as amino carboxylic acid containing an imidogroup with thionyl chloride activated polycondensation of the above two types of acids has been discussed. The role of different polyhalocompounds, acid acceptors, sequence of addition of reactants, temperature of reaction, etc. has been studied. It was observed that the molecular weight of the polyamide and polyamideimide, as evident from their inherent viscosity data, is generally higher, but the yield is lower than those obtained by thionyl chloride method. The reaction by the former method appears to be faster than the latter. The influence of various reaction conditions and possible mechanism of the polycondensation have been discussed.
