Notes: [Auszug] THE anomaly of the magnetic moment of the electron has been explained by Schwinger1 as due to the interaction of the electron with the zero-point fluctuations of the radiation field. A particularly simple derivation has recently been given by Luttinger2. Luttinger ...

Notes: Abstract In this article, we present a multigrid algorithm for parallel computers, the chopped parallel multigrid (CPMG) algorithm. The CPMG algorithm improves the processor utilization by reducing the work load on coarse grids without affecting the convergence rate of the algorithm. This is in contrast to earlier approaches (Gannon and van Rosendale, 1986; Frederickson and McBryan, 1989), where unutilized processors are used to improve the convergence rate. The CPMG algorithm reduces the coarse grid work bychopping the alternate cycles of multigrid. Using analytical results and simulations on sequential machines we show that the CPMG can achieve almost the same convergence rate as standard MG for many cases. Analytically we show that the advantage gained by CPMG over standard MG on a mesh connected massively parallel machine is 33% in hardware utilization, 50% in communication overheads and 38% in overall execution time. We have also evaluated the performance of CPMG on an actual massively parallel machine, the DAP-510. The advantage gained by CPMG over standard MG is 35% in overall execution time. Moreover, the CPMG can be integrated with other parallel multigrid algorithms, such as the PSMG algorithm (Frederickson and McBryan, 1989) and Decker's algorithm (Decker, 1990).

Notes: Abstract A class of regression type estimators of the parameterd in a fractionally differencedARMA (p, q) process is introduced. This class is an extension of the estimator considered by Geweke and Porter-Hudak. In a simulation study, we compared three estimators from this class together with two approximate maximum likelihood estimators which are based on two separate approximations to the likelihood. One approximation ignores the determinant term in the likelihood and the other includes a compensating factor for the determinant. When the determinant term is included, the estimate tends to be much less biased and is in general superior to the other estimate. The approximate maximum likelihood estimator out performed, by a large margin, the regression type estimators for pureARIMA (0,d,0) processes. However, forARIMA (1,d,1) processes, a regression type estimator turned out to be the best for realizations of length 400 in 3 out of the 5 cases we tried.

Notes: Summary Poly(vinyl chloride-g-isobutylene) has been synthesized using mildly dehydrochlorinated (NaOH treated) PVC in conjunction with BCl3 coinitiator. Treatment of PVC with NaOH increases initial thermal dehydrochlorination rate and renders the polymer suitable for efficient grafting. Untreated PVC produces negligible grafting.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we characterize a class of graphs which can be embedded on a boolean cube. Some of the graphs in this class are identified with the well known graphs such asmulti-dimensional mesh of trees, tree of meshes, etc. We suggest (i) an embedding of anr-dimensional mesh of trees ofn r (r+1)−rn r−1 nodes on a boolean cube of (2n) r nodes, and (ii) an embedding of a tree of meshes with 2n 2 logn+n 2 nodes on a boolean cube withn 2 exp2 (log (2 logn+1)]) nodes.
