    Description: The high degree of similarity between the mouse and human genomes is demonstrated through analysis of the sequence of mouse chromosome 16 (Mmu 16), which was obtained as part of a whole-genome shotgun assembly of the mouse genome. The mouse genome is about 10% smaller than the human genome, owing to a lower repetitive DNA content. Comparison of the structure and protein-coding potential of Mmu 16 with that of the homologous segments of the human genome identifies regions of conserved synteny with human chromosomes (Hsa) 3, 8, 12, 16, 21, and 22. Gene content and order are highly conserved between Mmu 16 and the syntenic blocks of the human genome.     Description: Plasmodium knowlesi is an intracellular malaria parasite whose natural vertebrate host is Macaca fascicularis (the 'kra' monkey); however, it is now increasingly recognized as a significant cause of human malaria, particularly in southeast Asia. Plasmodium knowlesi was the first malaria parasite species in which antigenic variation was demonstrated, and it has a close phylogenetic relationship to Plasmodium vivax, the second most important species of human malaria parasite (reviewed in ref. 4). Despite their relatedness, there are important phenotypic differences between them, such as host blood cell preference, absence of a dormant liver stage or 'hypnozoite' in P. knowlesi, and length of the asexual cycle (reviewed in ref. 4). Here we present an analysis of the P. knowlesi (H strain, Pk1(A+) clone) nuclear genome sequence. This is the first monkey malaria parasite genome to be described, and it provides an opportunity for comparison with the recently completed P. vivax genome and other sequenced Plasmodium genomes. In contrast to other Plasmodium genomes, putative variant antigen families are dispersed throughout the genome and are associated with intrachromosomal telomere repeats.     Notes: The tensile strength and elongation at break of EPR and SBR gum vulcanizates were determined as a function of network chain density. A large viscous contribution to the tensile force was found at low crosslink density, and the maximum in the tensile strength versus chain density curve decreased as more nearly equilibrium conditions were approached. The rate dependence of tensile strength of black-filled EPR was studied by creep rupture experiments. The temperature dependence of the tensile strength of filled EPR and SBR was studied and compared. The same limiting degree of cure was obtained for both filled and gum vulcanizates of EPR.

    Notes: Acetal copolymers prepared from trioxane and ethylene oxide consist of polyoxymethylene segments with oxyethylene units distributed in the chain. These oxyethylene units profoundly affect the thermal and chemical behavior of the polymer. The presence of the oxyethylene units renders the copolymer amenable to thermal or base hydrolytic treatment which results in a final product with stable endgroups. The copolymers so obtained are significantly more stable, thermally and chemically, than acetylated polyoxymethylene homopolymer.

    Description / Table of Contents: Platin und das Heißgaskorrosionsverhalten einer Superlegierung auf NickelbasisDas Verhalten einer Platin enthaltenden Superlegierung auf Nickelbasis (RJM 2012) bei Heißgaskorrosion wird mit dem Verhalten einer ähnlichen, jedoch kein Platin enthaltenden Legierung (IN 792 + Hf) verglichen. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche im Brenner-Prüfstand bei 800°C zeigen, daß die Zunderschichten auf der platinhaltigen Legierung auch nach 1000 h noch schützend wirken, während die platinfreie Legierung schon nach 200 h stark angegriffen wird. Der Einfluß des Platins auf den Schädigungsmechanismus wird erörtert.
    Notes: The hot corrosion behaviour of a platinum containing nickel based superalloy (RJM 2012) is compared with that of a similar alloy (IN 792 + Hf) without platinum. The results of burner rig testing at 800°C showed that the oxide scales on the platinum containing alloy were still very protective after 1000 h on test whilst the alloy without platinum was severely attacked after only 200 h. The influence of platinum on the degradation mechanisms is discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Härtungseigenschaften des Bismethacrylat-Derivates von Bisphenol-A-diglycidylether (VE-Harz) mit Styrol und α-Methylstyrol (MS) als Reaktivverdünner wurden untersucht. Ein zunehmender Gehalt an MS verzögerte die Härtung. Mit Glasfasermatten, die teilweise mit γ-Methacryloyloxyropyl-trimethoxysilan (MTS) behandelt waren, wurden Composites hergestellt, deren Grenzflächen-Scherspannung mit der Ein-Faser-Methode gemessen wurde. Die Beschichtung mit MTS verbesserte die Grenzflächen-Scherspannung der Composites um ca. 30-50%. Ein MS-Gehalt von bis zu 5 Gew.-% MS hatte keinen Einfluß auf die interlaminare Scherfestigkeit (ILSS), weder bei den glasfaserverstärkten Composites noch bei den Ein-Faser-Proben. Eine Erhöhung des MS-Anteils auf 15 Gew.-% verbesserte sowohl die ILSS als auch die Biegesteifigkeit und die Biegefestigkeit.
    Notes: The curing behaviour of bismethacryloyl derivative of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (vinyl ester VE resin) containing styrene and α-methyl styrene (MS) as reactive diluents was studied. Delayed curing was observed in samples containing increasing proportions of MS. Interfacial shear stress of untreated as well as γ-methacryloyloxy-propyl trimethoxy silane (MTS) treated, glass fibre-reinforced VE resin composites were measured by single fibre technique. In comparison to untreated glass fibres, a 30 - 50% increase in interfacial shear stress was observed in composites based on MTS treated glass fibres. Addition of up to 5 wt.-% MS to VE resin did not affect the interfacial shear strength (ILSS). This behaviour was observed by using ILSS measurement of both glass fabric-reinforced composites as well as single fibre specimens. Further increase in MS to 15 wt.-% resulted in an increase in ILSS and bending stiffness as well as flexural strength.

    Description / Table of Contents: Der Einfluß der Konzentration von Natriumhydrid als Katalysator und N-Benzoylcaprolactam als Cokatalysator auf die Polymerisation von ε-Caprolactam wurde untersucht. Dazu wurde die Änderung der Grenzviskositätszahl der entstandenen Polymeren in m-Kresol bei 25°C bestimmt. Auch der Einfluß der Polymerisationstemperatur wurde bei konstanter Konzentration von Katalysator und Cokatalysator auf die gleiche Weise untersucht.Obwohl die Reproduzierbarkeit der mittleren Molekulargewichte schwankte, kann man die folgenden Aussagen machen: Der höchste Wert der Viskositätszahl wurde für die niedrigste Konzentration des Cokatalysators erhalten. Die Viskositätszahl der Polymeren erreichte einen Maximalwert bei einer Katalysatorkonzentration von 1,8 mol-% für Cokatalysatorkonzentrationen von 1 und 2 mol-%, jedoch ergab sich bei höheren Konzentrationen an Cokatalysator kein klares Maximum. Im Bereich von 120-200°C ergab sich die höchste Viskositätszahl für die niedrigste Polymerisationstemperatur.
    Notes: The effects of changes in concentration of sodium hydride as catalyst, and N-benzoyl caprolactam as cocatalyst upon the polymerization of ε-caprolactam were studied. The effects were monitored as changes in the intrinsic viscosity of the resultant polymer determined in m-cresol at 25°C. Effects of changes in polymerization temperature at constant catalyst and cocatalyst concentration were also studied.Reproducibility of a given average molecular weight was variable. The highest value of intrinsic viscosity resulted from the lowest cocatalyst concentration studied. Intrinsic viscosity of the product reached a peak at 1.8 mol-% catalyst for 1 and 2 mol-% cocatalyst, but no clear peak occurred at the higher cocatalyst concentrations studied. The highest intrinsic viscosity resulted from the lowest polymerization temperature in the range from 120-200°C.

    Description / Table of Contents: Methylmethacrylat (MMA) mit einem Prepolymergehalt von 6-8% wurde mit unterschiedlichen Anteilen (1-20%) 2-Ethylhexylmethacrylat (EMMA), n-Hexylmethacrylat (HMA), 2-Ethylhexylacrylat (EHA) oder n-Hexylacrylat (HA) copolymerisiert. Aus den erhaltenen Copolymeren wurden Folien hergestellt, an denen der Einfluß der Copolymerstruktur auf Lichtdurchlässigkeit, Dichte und mechanische Eigenschaften ermittelt wurde. zugsfestigkeit and Speichermodul nahmen mit zunehmendem Comonomergehalt ab. Die Dehnung stieg im Fall von MMA/EHA- und MMA/HA-Copolymerfolien mit 15 und 20 Gew.-% Comonomeranteil merklich an. Mittels DMTA wurde die Erweichungstemperatur der Copolymeren bestimmt. Die HDT und die Erweichungstemperatur nahmen unter Biegebelastung mit steigendem Comonomergehalt de Copolymeren ab.
    Notes: The paper describes the fabrication of cast acrylic sheets by copolymerizing a prepolymer syrup of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts (1-20 wt.-%) of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA), n-hexyl methacrylate (HMA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) and n-hexyl acrylate (HA). The effect of structure of copolymer on light transmittance, density and mechanical properties was evaluated. Tensile strength and storage modulus decreased with increasing comonomer content. Strain increased significantly in the case of MMA/EHA and MMA/HA copolymer sheets having 15 and 20 wt.-% of comonomer. Softening temperature of copolymer samples was determined using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Heat deflection temperature under flexural load and softening temperature decreased with increasing comonomer content in copolymer.

    Description / Table of Contents: Durch Friedel-Crafts-Reaktion von 2-Chloranisol mit Chloracetylchlorid und 1,2-Dichlorethan oder Dichlormethan mit wasserfreiem Aluminiumchlorid als Katalysator und Kohlenstoffdisulfid als Lösungsmittel wurden unter verschiedenen experimentellen Bedingungen sieben Polyketone hergestellt. Diese wurden mittels IR-Spektroskopie, Dampfdruckosmometrie, Thermogravimetrie und Differentialkalorimetrie charakterisiert; der Chlorgehalt wurde nach Carius bestimmt. Die Polyketone wurden hinsichtlich ihrer antimikrobiellen Eigenschaften gegen ausgewählte Mikroorganismen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, daß einige dieser Harze gute antimikrobielle Eigenschaften gegenüber den untersuchten Mikroorganismen aufweisen und möglicherweise als Biozide kommerziell eingesetzt werden können.
    Notes: A series of seven polyketones was prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction using 2-chloroanisole, choroacetyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane and dichloromethane with anhydrous aluminium chloride as catalyst and carbon disulfide as a solvent under different experimental conditions. The polyketones thus obtained were characterized by determination of the chlorine content (Carius method), IR spectroscopy, vapour-pressure osmometry, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. All these polyketones were tested for their antimicrobial properties against selected microorganisms. The results indicate that some of these resins show fair to good antimicrobial properties towards tested microorganisms and may be used as commercial biocides.
