    Beschreibung: In a previous research project at NASA-Langley, a novel semi-2-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-2-IPN) was prepared from the linear, thermoplastic polyimidesulfone, and the more brittle, crosslinked, acetylene-terminated imidesulfone. Synergistic qualities such as improved thermooxidative stability and better processability were achieved from this combination. The novelty of the system lay in the fact that the structures of the linear and crosslinking components were nearly identical. This similarity in structure eliminates any phase separation problems common to many-IPNs. In a similar way, a semi-2-IPN was prepared from linear, thermoplastic LARC-TPI and acetylene-terminated LARC-TPI (ATLARC-TPI). The preparation and characterization of this system will be discussed as well as adhesive and composite data.

    Beschreibung: A set of 12.7 mm diameter stainless steel tubes were coated with ceramic and expanded. The bond cast was 0.08 to 0.13 mm NiCrAlY with 0.38 mm of ZrO2-8Y2O3 ceramic. Upon pressurization, the tube substrate yielded and overstressed the coatings in tension. The coatings cracked (i.e., they failed) but did not come off the tube. These results demonstrate that tensile failure of plasma-sprayed coatings is not catastrophic as is compressive failure, which leads to spallation.

    Beschreibung: Polyimide XU-218 films containing approximately 5 wt pct of Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), and Er(III) were prepared, and the effects of complexing each of the metals with the following four ligands were investigated: N-phenylphthalamate (NPPA), 2,4-pentanedionate (AcAc), 1,3-diphenyl 1,3-propanedionate (DBM), and a new hexa-aza-macrocyclic (MAC) ligand. The tris-chelated complexes of the mononegative ligands NPPA, AcAc, and DBM produced transparent, flexible films, which had magnetic and spectral properties very similar to those of the parent lanthanide complexes, while complexes of MAC showed problems due to the presence of lattice water and yielded dark brittle films. AcAc caused little or no effect on the glass transition temperature (Tg), while NPPA and DBM complexes lowered Tg to 269-290 C, and MAC indicated moisture by inflexion at 95-100 C with a true Tg at 320 C. All lanthanide-containing films were paramagnetic.

    Beschreibung: A pin-on-disk tribometer was used to study the tribological properties of methyl alcohol-coal slurries. Friction coefficients, steel pin wear rates and wear surface morphological studies were conducted on AISI 440C HT and M-50 bearing steels which were slid dry and in solutions of methyl alcohol, methyl alcohol-fine coal particles, and methyl alcohol-fine coal particles-flocking additive. The latter was an oil derived from coal and originally intended to be added to the coal slurry to improve the sedimentation and rheology properties. The results of this study indicated that the addition of the flocking additive to the coal slurry markedly improved the tribological properties, especially wear. In addition, the type of steel was found to be very important in determining the type of wear that took place. Cracks and pits were found on the M-50 steel pin wear surfaces that slid in the coal slurries while 440C HT steel pins showed none.

    Beschreibung: The degradation mechanism in thermal barrier coating systems subjected to prolonged heating in air as well as to thermal cycling was studied. Bond coat oxidation was found to be the most important reason for degradation. The oxidation produced NiO as well as Al?O? in one set of samples, but the variation in initial coating structure made it difficult to resolve systematic differences between isothermally heated and thermally cycled samples. However, the contribution to degradation from changes in substrate composition seemed less in the cycled sample.

    Beschreibung: A series of Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te ingots was cast both vertically and horizontally under well-defined thermal conditions by using a two-zone furnace with isothermal heat-pipe liners. The main objective of the experiments was to establish correlations between casting parameters and compositional redistribution and to develop ground-based data for a proposed flight experiment of casting of Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te alloys under reduced gravity conditions. The compositional variations along the axial and radial directions were determined by precision density measurements, infrared transmission spectra, and X-ray energy dispersion spectrometry. Comparison between the experimental results and a numerical simulation of the solidification process of Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te is described.

    Beschreibung: The development of crystal handling techniques for reflection infrared spectroscopy and methods for the fabrication and testing of tensile specimens are discussed. Data from mechanical, ac and dc electrical, and electron paramagnetic resonance studies conducted to determine the effects of 0.1-MeV and 1.0-MeV electron radiation on Mylar, Kapton, Ultem, and metal-doped Ultem are presented. Total doses ranging from 1 X 10 to the 8 rads to 1 X 10 to the 10 rads and dose rates from 5 X 10 to the 7 rads/hr to 1 X 10 to the 9 rads/hr were employed. The results of a study on the effects of aircraft service-environment fluids on Ultem are also reported. The weights and mechanical properties of Ultem were evaluated before and after exposure to water, JP4, Skydrol, an antifreeze, and a paint stripper.

    Beschreibung: The following features of five polyethylene films used by NASA in the construction of heavy lift balloons have been examined: molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, branching, melting behavior, density, surface texture, birefringence, orientation of crystalline regions, unlaxial deformation in the machine and transverse directions, and the effect of sample geometry and strain rate on deformation behavior. The goal of this exploratory study was to determine whether there are significant differences in any of the above mentioned features, or combination of features between the films. The acquisition of such information is a first step towards determining whether there are any specific correlations between film characteristics and the incidence of catastrophic failure of balloons during ascent through the troposphere. This exploratory study has resulted in the identification of similarities and differences between various features of the films.

    Beschreibung: LARC-TPI, a linear aromatic polyimide, developed by NASA Langley Research Center in the late 1970's had thermoplastic character, but its melt-flow properties were much lower than those of conventional thermoplastics. An imidized version of the LARC-TPI molding powder was submitted to NASA-Langley for evaluation. The initial broad melt of this material occurs in the 270 C range and reorders to higher melting forms, depending on the physical and thermal treatments. Rheological characterization of this polymer shows it to have a very low melt viscosity, which increases as the melted specie transforms to other crystalline forms with higher melting temperatures.
