Description: An experiment, using 100-keV electrons and 10 to the 9th -rad doses, was conducted on Ultem polyetherimide film. Mechanical, electron paramagnetic resonance, and infrared spectroscopic data suggested that the radiation produced crosslinking and embrittlement of the material.

Description: A study has been made of the changes in the mass, thickness and flexural properties of initially wet and dry specimens of graphite/epoxy composite material due to the equivalent of eight weeks of exposure to nonionizing space environmental parameters. The parameters were near and middle solar UV irradiance, high vacuum, and temperature. The flexural properties were not affected by the exposures. Changes occurred to the mass, dimensions, and surface morphology of the specimens which varied with individual and combined parameter exposures. The combined UV and elevated thermal environment had synergistic effects on the properties of the specimens.

Description: An experimental study has been made of the rise kinetics for changes in optical absorption in a single crystal of CdS which was bulk excited by pulsed laser light. The experimental data were compared to calculations from a simple model involving a bimolecular process. Experimental and calculated values agreed to within the experimental error and confirmed that light-induced modulation of absorption is a bimolecular process.

Description: Infrared spectroscopic techniques have been used to study the effects of electron radiation on the polyimide PMDA-p,p-prime- ODA. The radiation exposures were made at various dose rates, for a total dose approximately equal to that for 30 years of exposure to electron radiation in geosynchronous earth orbit. At high dose rates the major effect was probably the formation of a polyisoimide or a charged quaternary amine, and at the low dose rates the effect was a reduction in the amount or aromatic ether linkage. In addition, the effects of dose rate for a small total dose were studied. Elevated temperatures occurred at high dose rates and were, in part, probably the cause of the radiation product. The data suggest that dose rates for accelerated simulations of the space environment should not exceed 100,000 rads/sec.

Description: As the size and complexity of aerospace systems increase, the uses of polymers are also expected to increase. Polyimides constitute one promising generic class of polymeric materials. They retain good mechanical and physical properties at higher temperatures and absorb less moisture than do the epoxies, which are the polymers most frequently used in present aerospace systems. The properties of these polyimide materials are, therefore, of considerable interest to the aerospace community. Of particular importance are the electrical properties because these properties relate to both electrical and structural applications.

Description: Specimens of graphite/epoxy composites and epoxy resins were exposed to electron and gamma radiation, followed by mechanical property and fundamental measurements. Measurement techniques included: scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electron spin resonance spectroscopic analysis. Results indicate little or no change in flexural properties of miniature specimens of a graphite/epoxy composite and no change in failure mode at the fiber-resin interface and in the crystallinity of the fiber and the resin. Some doubt in the observation of stable flexural properties is cast by electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of a relatively large number of radiation-generated radicals. These generally lead to a change in cross-linking and in chain-scissioning which should alter mechanical properties.

Description: Effects of specimen preparation on measured values of an acrylic's electomagnetic properties at X-band microwave frequencies, TE sub 1,0 mode, utilizing an automatic network analyzer have been studied. For 1 percent or less error, a gap between the specimen edge and the 0.901-in. wall of the specimen holder was the most significant parameter. The gap had to be less than 0.002 in. The thickness variation and alignment errors in the direction parallel to the 0.901-in. wall were equally second most significant and had to be less than 1 degree. Errors in the measurement f the thickness were third most significant. They had to be less than 3 percent. The following parameters caused errors of 1 percent or less: ratios of specimen-holder thicknesses of more than 15 percent, gaps between the specimen edge and the 0.401-in. wall less than 0.045 in., position errors less than 15 percent, surface roughness, hickness variation in the direction parallel to the 0.401-in. wall less than 35 percent, and specimen alignment in the direction parallel to the 0.401-in. wall mass than 5 degrees.

Description: The principal thrust of the LSST program is to develop the materials technology required for confident design of large space systems such as antennas and platforms. Areas of research in the FY-79 program include evaluation of polysulfones, measurement of the coefficient of thermal expansion of low expansion composite laminates, thermal cycling effects, and cable technology. The development of new long thermal control coatings and adhesives for use in space is discussed. The determination of radiation damage mechanisms of resin matrix composites and the formulation of new polymer matrices that are inherently more stable in the space environment are examined.
