Notes: Abstract Pseudo-α1-acid glycoprotein with carbohydrate chain ratio typical of native form was synthesized by a previously developed original technique of quantitative transfer of α1-acid glycoprotein carbohydrate chains to other polymeric carrier. Similarly to native glycoprotein, the semisynthetic analog inhibited lymphocyte proliferation and stimulated the production of antiinflammatory cytokines by peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes. However, it possessed no antioxidant activity and did not inhibit complement activation by the alternative pathway. The role of carbohydrate and protein components of α1-acid glycoprotein molecule in the realization of its biological effects is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In vitro experiments demonstrate that various doses of dexamethasone not only inhibit production of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor but also markedly stimulate it in cells of the total pool of human peripheral blood mononuclears. Production of tumor necrosis factor in the presence of dexamethasone is stimulated in all donors, while production of interleukin-6 is strongly inhibited, usually in a dose-dependent manner.

Notes: Abstract The probability of the six-quark bag part of the deuteron is defined within recently formulated quark compound bag (QCB) model. An upper limit of about 1 % for the admixture of the confined bag in the deuteron is found for the QCB potential supplied by the long range Paris interaction. The six-quark bag corrections to the static multipole moments of the deuteron are estimated to be ≲1 % forμ d and ≲6% forQ d .

Description: As the aerosol products from the NASA Earth Observing System's Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) mature, we are placing greater focus on ways of using the aerosol amount and type data products, and aerosol plume heights, to constrain aerosol transport models. We have demonstrated the ability to map aerosol air-mass-types regionally, and have identified product upgrades required to apply them globally, including the need for a quality flag indicating the aerosol type information content, that varies depending upon retrieval conditions. We have shown that MISR aerosol type can distinguish smoke from dust, volcanic ash from sulfate and water particles, and can identify qualitative differences in mixtures of smoke, dust, and pollution aerosol components in urban settings. We demonstrated the use of stereo imaging to map smoke, dust, and volcanic effluent plume injection height, and the combination of MISR and MODIS aerosol optical depth maps to constrain wildfire smoke source strength. This talk will briefly highlight where we stand on these application, with emphasis on the steps we are taking toward applying the capabilities toward constraining aerosol transport models, planet-wide.

Description: Previous studies showed that, over the global ocean, there is hemispheric asymmetry in aerosols and no noticeable asymmetry in cloud fraction (CF). In the current study, we focus on the tropical Atlantic (30 Deg N 30 Deg S) which is characterized by significant amounts of Saharan dust dominating other aerosol species over the North Atlantic. We found that, by contrast to the global ocean, over a limited area such as the tropical Atlantic, strong meridional asymmetry in dust aerosols was accompanied by meridional CF asymmetry. During the 10-year study period (July 2002 June 2012), NASA Aerosol Reanalysis (aka MERRAero) showed that, when the meridional asymmetry in dust aerosol optical thickness (AOT) was the most pronounced (particularly in July), dust AOT averaged separately over the tropical North Atlantic was one order of magnitude higher than dust AOT averaged over the tropical South Atlantic. In the presence of such strong meridional asymmetry in dust AOT in July, CF averaged separately over the tropical North Atlantic exceeded CF averaged over the tropical South Atlantic by 20%. Our study showed significant cloud cover, up to 0.8 - 0.9, in July along the Saharan Air Layer which contributed to above-mentioned meridional CF asymmetry. Both Multi-Angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) measurements and MERRAero data were in agreement on seasonal variations in meridional aerosol asymmetry. Meridional asymmetry in total AOT over the Atlantic was the most pronounced between March and July, when dust presence over the North Atlantic was maximal. In September and October, there was no noticeable meridional asymmetry in total AOT and meridional CF distribution over the tropical Atlantic was almost symmetrical.
