    Description: Silver belly (Leiognathus Spp.) forms a major fishery in recent years in the Rameswaram island but fetches for the fishermen very low prices ranging from Rs. 0.03 to 0.12/Kg only, there being practically no demand for the fish. The possibilities of utilizing this cheap fish are discussed and the processing method described. During the glut season the cost of production of Silver belly fish meal works out to competitive prices of Rs. 500 to 700/ton. The silver belly fish meal is of high quality with good protein content averaging 57.71% in commercial samples and 61.90% in laboratory samples and with a high pepsin digestibility of 90.0% to 92.5%. The essential amino acid composition of the Silver belly fish meal compares very favorably with other round fish meals, with high contents of lysine, leucine, arginine, isoleucine, methionine, phenyl alanine, threonine and valine. Since there is good demand for fish meal as poultry and cattle food both in the internal and external markets, there is good scope for large scale production and sale of fish meal.

    Description: A survey of the quality of salt cured fish in Kanyakumari District, Madras State was done during the years 1963 and 1964 to obtain necessary basic information to formulate quality standards for these products which are gaining importance in the export trade. 155 trade samples of sun-dried, dry-salted, wet-cured and pit-cured fishery products were examined for their chemical quality and organoleptic characteristics. 26.5% of the sun-dried products, 25% of the wet cured fish, 55.21% of the dried salted products and none of the pit cured samples were found to be good in quality. The sun dried products were generally found to have heavy admixture of sand and were inadequately dried. The chief defects in the salt cured fish products were found to be the use of spoiled fish, imperfect cleaning and washing, use of impure salt, inadequate salting, curing and drying, and unhygienic conditions in all stages. Quality standards must be formulated for each variety of salt cured fish product and adequate measures taken to rectify the defects and enforce the quality standards.

    Description: This note gives details of experiments conducted on the canning of certain species of sardines viz. Sardinella fimbriata, Sardinella gibbosa and Sardinella sirm which are landed in commercial quantities in the East Coast of Madras State and which have not so far been tried for canning. The experiments conclusively prove that these species of sardines can also be canned in oil pack and good canned products manufactured out of them.

    Description: Traditional bamboo basket and expanded polystyrene insulated plywood box (second hand tea-chest) were compared for transportation of iced marine, fresh water and brackish water fishes from Kakinada to Madras by rail. Quality of fish at dispatching and receiving centres was assessed by organoleptic, total volatile nitrogen (TVN) and total bacterial count (TBC) tests. Based on the results obtained and the prices fetched, the traditional bamboo basket apart from being cheaper was found to be as good as expanded polystyrene insulated plywood box for short distance transportation of iced fish involving less than 24 hours journey.

    Notes: Abstract Although polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is essentially transparent to light of 308 or 351 nm, it can be made sensitive to photoablation and etching by excimer laser pulses (20 ns half-width) of those wavelengths by the introduction of an organic dopant. The dopant (trade name=Tinuvin*) is actually a quencher of the first electronic excited state of PMMA and is therefore used commercially to stabilize the polymer against photodegradation. Laser etching of Tinuvin-doped PMMA can be shown to be a photochemical process in which the Tinuvin decomposes by the absorption of two or more photons and causes the ablation of the surrounding polymer.*[2-(2′-hydroxy-3′,5′-diisopentyl-phenyl) benzotriazole].

    Notes: Abstract Continuous wave laser radiation from an argonion laser in the wavelength range 275–330 nm can be used to etch polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films with as little thermal damage as from a pulsed, ultraviolet laser (248 nm or 308 nm) provided the beam is focussed to a spot of 10–100 kW/cm2 of power density and is moved over the surface at speeds at which the transit time over its own diameter (which can be looked upon as a “pulse width”) is on the order of 10–200 μs. In contrast to results which had been obtained previously on the photokinetic etching of polyimide and doped polymethyl methacrylate films under similar conditions, the sensitivity of PET to etching is 〉5-fold greater than either of these polymers and increases steadily with increasing pulse width. There is lateral thermal damage as the pulse widths increase to 〉200 μs. The material that is removed is vaporized in part. More than 20% is probably ejected in a molten state and resolidifies at the edge of the cut. There is no acoustic report similar to that seen in ablative photodecomposition. The process appears to be largely thermal in nature.

    Notes: Abstract Ablation of the surface of a polyimide (Kapton™) film by single pulses of 248 nm or 308 nm radiation (∼20 ns) or 9.17 μm laser radiation (∼170 ns) was studied by photographing the emergence of the blast wave and the plume by a pulse (〈1 ns; 596 nm) of visible laser light. The dynamics of the blast wave was similar in the ultraviolet and in the infrared but the composition of the plume was obviously different. A mass of opaque solid material was ejected for as long as 2.6 μs following the IR pulse in contrast to the minute amount of solids that are seen in the ablation by UV laser pulses of ns duration. UV laser pulses of 50–400 μs duration interact with polyimide surfaces in a manner that is similar to IR laser pulses of ns duration or longer. Chemical analysis of the ablation products that are obtained under various conditions of ablation when compared to the known modes of thermal degradation of polyimide show that the reaction is a thermal process when IR laser pulses or UV laser pulses of long (〉10 μs) duration are employed. Ablation by ns UV laser pulses differs fundamentally in the chemistry of the products from all of the cases mentioned above.
