Notes: The polymerization of racemic methylthiirane in homogeneous phase, initiated by bis(isopropyl-S-cysteinato) cadmium is a living process. The resulting polymers are isotactic and optically active at partial conversion. The optical purity of the residual monomer may reach 27% at half conversion. The propagation occurs mainly on one valency of Cd, however oligomers grow slowly on the second valency. The stereoregularity of the polymer chain appears only when the length of the oligomer becomes high enough, making possible a bicoordination of the Cd counterions. The stereoregularity of the polymer is characterized by the molar fraction σ of isotactic diads which varies from 0.5 for atactic chains - formed at the beginning - to about one for isotactic segments formed for longer chains. The stereospecifictity also depends on temperature of propagation and on initiator concentration. The kinetics observed (zero order in monomer and one-half in Cd) are explained by monomer coordination before insertion and dimeric association of the thiolate end groups. The enantioasymmetric process observed results from an unbalance in the number of the two different types of active sites and possibly from a difference in their reactivities. Enantioasymmetry has been found to decrease significantly when the dielectric constant ε of the medium increases.

Notes: Among the various classes of techniques used to probe solid surfaces, surface infrared spectroscopy has gained wide recognition for its ability to determine the chemical nature of surfaces and interfaces.Synchrotron infrared radiation has been demonstrated to be a source of high brightness in the far-IR region, allowing determination of adsorbate-substrate modes as well as frustrated vibrational modes of adsorbed molecules.Sum frequency generation, which uses both IR and visible pulses generated by lasers, and coupled at surfaces, allows the identification of species strictly located at the interface.Kinetic as well as dynamics measurements are a growing area of time-resolved spectroscopy, using either spectrometers or lasers.

Notes: A technique of isoelectric focusing of proteins from single pollen grains has been developed using ultrathin polyacrylamide gels. On a single gel, one hundred grains may be compared for total proteins or enzyme patterns. With this technique it was possible to reveal heterogeneity of pollen grains in a population at a genetic level and in relation to pollen viability.

Notes: In the cruciferous plant Brassica oleracea L. (cabbage), the S-locus specific glycoproteins (SLSGs) isolated only in stigmas are considered to play an important role in the normal prevention of self-fertilization. Recent molecular data have shown that the gene encoding these glycoproteins (the SLG gene) belonged to a multigenic family consisting of about 10 homologous copies among which an, other member is expressed, the S-locus related gene (SLR1gene). Our aim was to determine whether the SLR1-gene proteins were expressed in the stigmatic tissues. We first identified the putative SLSGs or SLR1-proteins by Con A-peroxidase detection of glycoproteins separated after isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels. We describe a fast purification procedure for the glycoproteins of interest, based on analytical isoelectric focusing, electrophoresis, and electroblotting of proteins onto polyvinylidene difluoride membranes. Blotted proteins were sequenced for N-terminal amino acid determination. By comparison of the N-terminal sequences of the purified proteins with the peptide sequence predicted from the SLR1-cDNA, we demonstrate the expression of SLR1-like proteins in stigmas of B. oleracea.

Notes: In order to analyse and quantitate the urinary 16-oxysteroids known or thought to be associated with hypertension, we have established for six 16-oxy-C19 reference steroids the following parameters: elution volume on lipophilic gel columns, gas chromatographic retention data expressed as methylene unit values of trimethylsilyl ether and O-methoxime trimethylsilyl ether derivatives on OV-1 and OV-17 packed columuns and on SE-30 capillary column, and mass spectra of these compounds. These reference steroids were: 3α, 16α-dihydroxy-5α-androstan-17 one, 3α,16α-dihydroxy-5β-androstan-17-one, 3β,16α-dihydroxy-5α-androstan-17-one, 3β,16α-dihydroxy-5-androsten-17-one, 3β,16β-dihydroxy-5-androsten-17-one, 3β,17β-dihydroxy-5-androsten-16-one and 3α,15α-dihydroxy-5β-androstan-17-one. The proposed method was shown to be applicable to the specific analysis of 16-oxy-C19-steroids in biological samples since it achieved the selective isolation of these compounds from other steroids and their quantitative elution in a single fraction. The analysis of the urinary steroids of two patients with arterial hypertension demonstrated an elevated rate of 3β,16α-dihydroxy-5-androstan-17-one.

Notes: In propylene polymerization over TiCl4/MgCl2/ethyl benzoate (EB)/triethyl aluminum (TEA) catalysts, experimental evidence strongly suggests that active sites have differing propagation and termination rate constants. Although the chemical structure of these sites may be quite similar, their location on the support may affect their polymerization activity, and this results in a distribution of the propagation and deactivation rate constants. To model this type of system, we developed a kinetic model accounting for multiple active sites. The model was fitted to simulated polymerization data to investigate the validity of mathematical approximations used in the derivation of the model equation. Using experimental data, the adequacy of the model was tested, and the statistical inference of parameter estimation was also discussed. The effects of experimental operating variables and additives on the kinetic model parameters revealed an important insight into the fundamentals of this system. The optimum productivity commonly observed has been shown to be the result of differing rates of increase of both propagation and termination rates with Al/Ti ratio and temperature. Kinetic evidence also suggests that the additive selectively poisons atactic-specific sites.
