Notes: A theoretical equation is presented for predicting the specific heat at constant volume and constant pressure of organic liquids as a function of temperature from data on the velocity of sound, infrared and Raman spectra. By use of this equation, the average deviation of the calculated from the experimental values of specific heat for 100 organic liquids at 68°F. is ±1.5%.An alternate correlation for hydrocarbon liquids based on a modified statement of the theory of corresponding states is also presented. Based on it, the average deviation of the calculated from the experimental values for 100 points representing the entire temperature range is ±0.9%.

Notes: Values of thermal conductivity and temperature coefficients for thirty-five pure organic liquids, in addition to those previously reported, obtained with a previously described apparatus (Part I), are presented. Values of thermal conductivity or temperature coefficients for twenty-eight of these liquids have not been reported before. The experimentally determined maximum error is ±1.0%.The two methods for predicting the thermal conductivity of liquids previously proposed (Parts I and II) are extended to cover the types of compounds studied in this investigation, in particular ring compounds. The temperature coefficient of thermal conductivity was observed to decrease rapidly, approaching zero as the freezing point is approached. The existence of a transition temperature or region within the liquid state is shown and identified with the onset of molecular rotation.

Notes: In 1856 Darcy observed that water flowed through a sand bed at a rate proportional to the area of the bed and to the difference between the upstream and dowstream hydraulic heads and inversely proportional to the bed thickness. Since that time many investigators have accumulated masses of data in support of numerous theoretical and empirical relationships for correlating and predicting pressure drop, flow rate, and fluid and bed properties. Naturally certain areas of research have received less attention than others.Among the areas receiving least attention are flow through beds composed of particles of identical shape but mixed size, flow through unconsolidated beds composed of small particles, and flow under the influence of a centrifugal driving force. Accordingly, the flow of liquids through unconsolidated beds of small spherical particles of mixed size was investigated in two laboratory centrifugal filters. Experimental conditions were such that the flow was laminar and the cakes were incompressible. While there was some difficulty in obtaining reproducibility of cakes, the data for any particular cake were correlated satisfactorily by the Darcy equation adapted for centrifugal filtration.

Notes: Equations are derived for obtaining activity coefficients at infinite dilution in binary systems by use of one of the following: (1) an isobaric temperature - liquid composition diagram, (2) an isobaric temperature - vapor composition diagram, (3) an isothermal pressure - liquid composition diagram, or (4) an isothermal pressure - vapor composition diagram. The derived equations are thermodynamically exact, and application involves no doubtful extrapolation of experimental data, as has heretofore been the case. Each equation involves the slope of one of the diagrams at the point corresponding to the pure component. Attention is called to the fact that data on the compositions of both the vapor and liquid phases in equilibrium are not required. Use of the equations is illustrated.

Notes: Values of thermal conductivity and temperature coefficients for fifty-three pure organic liquids, obtained with newly designed, extensively tested apparatus, are presented. For thirty-one of these liquids values of thermal conductivity or temperature coefficients have not been previously reported. The statisically determined maximum error in the presented values of thermal conductivity of liquids is ±1.50%.A method of correlating the thermal conductivity of liquids based on a modified statement of the theory of corresponding states is presented. Group contributions to the thermal conductivity were calculated. The thermal conductivity of liquids was predicted by this method and the average deviation of the calculated from the observed values for forty-seven liquids is ±1.50%. The proposed method of correlation permits the calculation of the thermal conductivity of a series of liquids at any temperature from a single known value.

Notes: Die drawing, a new process for the production of oriented thermoplastic rods with an ultrahigh modulus of elasticity, involves drawing an isotropic workpiece through a converging die at temperatures below the polymer melting point. Die drawing of polypropylene is described, but the process is applicable to any polymer which can be drawn by conventional means. The considerable advantages of die drawing compared with conventional tensile drawing and hydrostatic or ram extrusion are discussed.

Notes: A four-stream computer-controlled reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM) machine has been developed that attains high accuracy in dispense ratios throughout the injection period. This machine has been used for novel processing of polyurethanes, offering a route to varying product properties either throughout a shot or on a shotto-shot basis. It also has been used for what appears to be the first production on commercial scale RRIM equipment of a polyurethane-acrylic interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) in commercial cycle times of around 2 min.

Description: Review of descriptions of the 12 problem-solving tasks developed since the last review (Ray, 1955) of this topic, indicating that the newer tasks are more sophisticated in design and provide for better experimental control than those used prior to 1953. Validity, reliability, sensitivity, trainability, problem structure, and problem difficulty are discussed as criteria for the selection of tasks to be used in studies of skilled problem-solving performance.
