Notes: This paper examines how companies can achieve competitive advantage by fitting their business strategies to the way in which new technology implementation is managed. In particular, the inter-relationship between strategy, technology and performance is examined. Five strategic types and seven types of technological objectives were used to find combinations which were associated with high performance. It was found that companies pursuing a prospector strategy (a strategy based on product innovation) combined with technological objectives emphasizing marketing, image and technical development were the highest performing group of companies. The lowest performing companies were those where strategy was dominated by price competition. The general conclusion of the paper is that, in order to achieve competitive advantage, companies need to see technology objectives as an inherent part of strategy. The study was carried out on a sample of twenty companies within the polymer processing industry, but the findings should be applicable to companies in other industries, and particularly to smaller companies.

Notes: In 1959 a collection of over twenty thousand Chinese-language documents, previously kept in the rambling Peking compound which had housed the British Legation (latterly, British Embassy) since 1861, was transmitted to the Public Record Office in London. It was given the class title Papers in the Chinese Language and the class number FO 682. The documents, some of which were rumoured to have been lying among the rafters of the Legation chapel, arrived in a state of confusion. Early attempts at listing reflected rather than resolved the confusion, but the documents are in fact far from being the trackless jumble sometimes supposed.

Notes: Abstract The plastic deformation behaviour of linear polyethylene and polyoxmethylene has been studied as a function of strain rate over a very wide range of plastic strains (deformation ratios up to ∼ 25). The results have been examined in terms of the concept of a true stress-strain-strain rate relationship. It has been shown that results for drawn fibres and extruded rods are compatible on this basis, and true stress-strain-strain rate surfaces can be defined. The significance of these results with regard to both tensile drawing and hydrostatic extrusion processes is considered. A preliminary discussion of the rate dependence is also presented.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is presented for the mechanics of the hydrostatic extrusion of polymers in the solid phase through a conical die. The analysis starts with the lower bound solution proposed by Hoffman and Sachs and includes the effects of strain, strain rate and pressure on the deformation behaviour. It is proposed that this involves knowledge of the tensile stress-strain-strain rate relationships for each polymer, and it is shown how such information for polyethylene and polyoxymethylene can be used to explain the observed behaviour of these materials in the solid-phase extrusion process.

Notes: Abstract Neck profiles, neck propagation velocities and draw loads were measured for a series of linear polyethylene samples drawn in a tensile testing machine at 21, 75 and 100° C. The results were used to determine the profiles of strain, strain rate and draw stress in the neck. Elementary considerations show that the strain rate field in the neck relates to the strain hardening and to the strain rate sensitivity. A point of particular interest is that strain hardening appears to relate primarily to the polymer molecular weight whereas the strain rate sensitivity is more sensitive to the initial thermal treatment. The relationship of the present work to studies of true stress-true strain-true strain rate surfaces is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An image analysis system has been developed using commercially available hardware with custom software to investigate the deformation behaviour of solid polymers in uniaxial tension. This technique provides a rapid, semi-automated non-contacting method for determining true process stress-strain-strain-rate behaviour for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous deformation. The relative displacements of printed transverse grid lines are determined from images captured during a standard monotonic tensile test, providing local measures of strain. The examination of a time series of images allows the generation of true strain-rate data, and concurrent monitoring of the total draw force from the load cell allows the generation of true stress data at those times when the images are captured. Therefore, it is possible to produce a series of process uniaxial true stress-strain curves for individual “elements” of material within the gauge length of the specimen. Synthetic elastomers drawn at ambient temperature have been found to display relatively homogeneous deformation, resulting in a simple process axial stress-strain curve for the single-speed test, whereas in the case of inhomogeneous deformation (“necking”) exhibited by polypropylene, it is verified that each element of material experiences a slightly different deformation process. This spatially variant deformation is related to the original location of the particular element with respect to the point of neck initiation.

Notes: A four-stream computer-controlled reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM) machine has been developed that attains high accuracy in dispense ratios throughout the injection period. This machine has been used for novel processing of polyurethanes, offering a route to varying product properties either throughout a shot or on a shotto-shot basis. It also has been used for what appears to be the first production on commercial scale RRIM equipment of a polyurethane-acrylic interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) in commercial cycle times of around 2 min.

Notes: Die drawing, a new process for the production of oriented thermoplastic rods with an ultrahigh modulus of elasticity, involves drawing an isotropic workpiece through a converging die at temperatures below the polymer melting point. Die drawing of polypropylene is described, but the process is applicable to any polymer which can be drawn by conventional means. The considerable advantages of die drawing compared with conventional tensile drawing and hydrostatic or ram extrusion are discussed.

Notes: The hydrostatic extrusion behavior of polyoxymethylene (POM) is described. Extrusions were performed at 164°C for a range of different molecular weight grades. Excellent unflawed lengths of extrudate were obtained with axial Young's moduli, measured at room temperature, reaching values as high as 24 GPa. The extrusion characteristics are discussed in terms of the very strong dependence of the flow stress of POM on strain and strain rate and pressure. In addition to measurements of Young's modulus over a wide temperature range, data for shear modulus and transvers modulus are also presented. A limited amount of other structural measurements is presented.
