Description: The Giotto Complete Positive ion, Electron and Ram Negative Ion measurements near Comet Halley plasma experiment identified regions in which the solar wind interaction with the cometary plasma displayed characteristic features. Beginning 4.6 million km from the comet there is an upstream region with sporadic connection to the comet. An electron foreshock is present up to 250,000 km away from the bow shock. A bow shock is detected at 1.15 million km. Between the bow shock and the cometopause the outer regions can be divided into three parts. A cometopause is found at 135,000 km, and a density decrease is detected at 45,000 km from the comet. The detailed plasma features associated with these regions are described.

Notes: Red blood cell damage and destruction are important problems in the use of artificial valves, heart-lung machines, and other devices which pump or process blood. An experimental study has been made on the mechanism of cell damage. Damage was defined by three types of observations on blood which had been subjected to trauma: (a) release of hemoglobin from cells (hemolysis), (b) morphological changes observed microscopically, and (c) red cell life span studies in rabbits using a Cr51 tagging technique.Three types of physical forces which might be injurious to red cells were studied; shearing stress (of known, constant magnitudes from a concentric cylinder viscometer), pressure variations (from studies in a static pressure cell), and direct impact of solid surfaces (from studies in a device which simulates the seating action of artificial heart valves). The study shows that high shearing stress may be primarily responsible for mechanical cell damage under certain important circumstances. There is a critical shearing stress above which cell damage increases markedly. Much of the cell damage does not appear as an immediate release of hemoglobin. Many cells undergo morphological changes and exhibit shortened average life span in vivo. The morphological changes due to shearing stress are very similar to the changes observed in patients who have hemolytic anemia associated with artificial valves.

Notes: Controlled studies have been made of unidirectional freeze-drying of turkey meat. The results provide a test of the model of a uniformly retreating ice front. Comparisons are made with independent measurements of thermal conductivity and with the predicted effect of pressure level upon diffusivity. Variables explored include the pressure and humidity of the drying chamber, the meat surface temperature, and the grain orientation. Drying rates were measured in the presence of water vapor alone and also in the presence of 0 to 760 mm. Hg of nitrogen or helium. Nitrogen and helium runs were made both with a stagnant gas phase and with a circulating gas stream. The rates show quantitative agreement with the uniformly retreating ice front model during the removal of most of the moisture.

Notes: A flow type of apparatus is built to give equilibrium gas and liquid samples at elevated pressures and temperatures while minimizing thermal decomposition. Saturated vapor and liquid compositions and K values are determined with this apparatus for the binary system hydrogen/tetralin (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene) at four temperatures from 189.6° to 389.1°C, and seven pressures from 20 to 250 atm. Vapor pressures of tetralin are determined with the same apparatus, and values are reported at the four temperatures of this work.

Notes: Samples of Narmco Rigidite 5208/WC3000 carbon-epoxy composite prepreg were exposed to ambient temperature (22°C) and 50 percent relative humidity for different periods up to 66 days. The aging has a significant effect on prepreg physical properties such as tack, volatiles content, and gel time. A set of 4-ply laminates made from aged prepreg was subjected to tensile testing, ultrasonic inspection, and optothermal inspection. No relationship could be discerned between laminate properties and prepreg aging time. However, variations in panel homogeneity were observed, and these correlated with thermal diffusivity and tensile modulus measurements, but not with ultimate tensile strength or elongation. A set of 6-ply laminates was used to measure compressive properties, interlaminar shear strength, and physical properties. These panels also showed variations in porosity, again unrelated to aging, but in addition, the fiber/resin ratio was observed to decrease with aging time. Both factors were found to affect mechanical properties. The implications concerning the importance of monitoring the aging by physicochemical methods are discussed.

Notes: The transport equations for a power law fluid are used to solve the transient and non-isothermal problem of filling a disk-shaped cavity. Using the results obtained it is possible to predict gate pressures, fill times and short shots. Furthermore, the velocity and temperature fields can be obtained throughout the filling process. This information specifies the formation of a frozen surface layer during filling. Rigid PVC was primarily used in the simulations, but some results are also given for linear polyethylene, nylon 6-6, ABS and polystyrene.

Notes: A series of radiation sensitive and relatively high molecular weight poly(tetramethylene adipate) polyurethanes containing pendant acryfate functionality was synthesized. These radiation curable materials possess good mechanical properties and behave like common thermoplastic elastomers prior to chemical crosslinking which further enhances their strength and insolublizes them. Both the precursor and the cured materials were characterized by stress-strain, differential scanning calorimetry. and dynamic mechanical testing. It was found that the poly-(tetramethylene adipate) soft segments with molecular weight of 2000 or higher were crystallizable in the cross-linked network. The soft segment molecular weight and the diisocyanate type were found to be important in determining the tensile and thermal properties of these male-rials. The crosslinking process was found to depress crystallization of the soft segments and to improve tensile properties. Increasing the soft segment molecular weight resulted in an Increased elongation al break bill a decreased ultimate stress for both the precursor linear polymers and the crosslinked materials.
