Description: The Giotto Complete Positive ion, Electron and Ram Negative Ion measurements near Comet Halley plasma experiment identified regions in which the solar wind interaction with the cometary plasma displayed characteristic features. Beginning 4.6 million km from the comet there is an upstream region with sporadic connection to the comet. An electron foreshock is present up to 250,000 km away from the bow shock. A bow shock is detected at 1.15 million km. Between the bow shock and the cometopause the outer regions can be divided into three parts. A cometopause is found at 135,000 km, and a density decrease is detected at 45,000 km from the comet. The detailed plasma features associated with these regions are described.

Notes: Some earlier observations on the influence of molecular weight, plasticizer, and irradiation on the thermal conductivity of polymers is reviewed. Also some new data on polystyrene and some new calculations based on the theory of Hansen and Ho are presented. These data show almost a two fold increase in the thermal conductivity of polystyrene as the molecular weight goes from 900 to 100,000. Data on the moleculer weight effect on thermal conductivity appear to be consistent with the theoretical calculations.

Notes: The transport equations for a power law fluid are used to solve the transient and non-isothermal problem of filling a disk-shaped cavity. Using the results obtained it is possible to predict gate pressures, fill times and short shots. Furthermore, the velocity and temperature fields can be obtained throughout the filling process. This information specifies the formation of a frozen surface layer during filling. Rigid PVC was primarily used in the simulations, but some results are also given for linear polyethylene, nylon 6-6, ABS and polystyrene.

Notes: Ordering of the medium in which free radical polymerization is conducted can, under appropriate circumstances, alter the kinetics of the chain-growth process, resulting in enhanced rates. Since in many systems medium changes occur at higher conversion, it is important to take into account any alterations in the polymerization rate induced by such phenomena. We have found that exotherms initiated by individual laser pulses can be useful in identifying and providing detailed information concerning rate acceleration in liquid crystalline systems. From measurements of the pulse intensities in the sample cell, estimates of the quantum efficiency and kinetic chain length have been made directly from the integrated areas of the exotherm curves. Recent refinements in our sample geometry have allowed us to generate reproducible efficient data as a function of the degree of conversion and order in the polymerization medium.

Notes: Molecular structures for cured, thermoset resins have been examined by analyses of resin extracts by gel permeation chromatography. Numerical interpretation of leached oligomeric fractions coupled with kinetic reaction theory yields microscopic estimates of the network's structure, including crosslink average molecular weight. Leached monomeric fractions describe extent of cure. Analyses of test data incorporate irreversible, mechanical deformations for neat resin castings and for filament wound, Kevlar 49 composites. Heat distortion temperatures correlate with crosslink architecture. Short beam shear strength data for naval ordinance laboratory rings and pressure vessel burst performance are examined in terms of the resin's molecular structure. Variations in resin cure observed by positive feedback via chromatography indicate fluctuations in extent of crosslink development. Test specimen performance correlates with these microscopic, molecular distributions. Resin applications include filament wound composites for the aerospace industry, anhydride cured epoxies, and amine cured epoxies. The former resin is an elastic body at ambient test conditions. A third resin, a crosslinked resin of 1,2 polybutadiene/t-butylstyrene, is in final developmental stages and may exhibit a higher degree of viscoelastic behavior.

Notes: A series of radiation sensitive and relatively high molecular weight poly(tetramethylene adipate) polyurethanes containing pendant acryfate functionality was synthesized. These radiation curable materials possess good mechanical properties and behave like common thermoplastic elastomers prior to chemical crosslinking which further enhances their strength and insolublizes them. Both the precursor and the cured materials were characterized by stress-strain, differential scanning calorimetry. and dynamic mechanical testing. It was found that the poly-(tetramethylene adipate) soft segments with molecular weight of 2000 or higher were crystallizable in the cross-linked network. The soft segment molecular weight and the diisocyanate type were found to be important in determining the tensile and thermal properties of these male-rials. The crosslinking process was found to depress crystallization of the soft segments and to improve tensile properties. Increasing the soft segment molecular weight resulted in an Increased elongation al break bill a decreased ultimate stress for both the precursor linear polymers and the crosslinked materials.

Notes: The shear yielding processes in the deformation of biaxially oriented styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer films (machine oriented with draw ratio = 6.9 in the machine direction and 2.9 in the transverse direction) were studied. In the transverse direction, two sets of shear bands with an intersection angle of about 123.6 degrees (61.8 degrees with the tensile axis) were developed. When necking occurred, the bands in the necked region were thin and discontinuous with an intersection angle of about 81 degrees. In the machine direction, shear bands appeared to be short and diffused with an intersection angle of about 119.2 degrees. Only a slight necking effect was observed. The Luders strain in the transverse direction was about 0.56 and in the machine direction, about 0.16. The shearstrain-volume of activation obtained from the strain rate dependence of shear stress was about 3440 ± 400 Å3 in the machine direction and 2700 ± 500 Å3 in the transverse direction. The work hardening behavior in both directions seemed to follow a linear relationship between 1n (tensile stress) and tensile strain at large strains. From a consideration of localized shearing toward tensile axis, the fraction of deformed materials was calculated. These observations indicated that (1) a strong orientation hardening effect existed in unbalanced biaxially oriented films, resulting from the difference of the amount of deformable materials between individual directions; and (2) deformation proceeded by shear banding with the high orientation direction involved more correlated molecular segments than the low orientation direction during the activation process.
