    Notes: Abstract High-spin states of145Sm were studied by using the20Ne(136Xe, α7n),139La (10B, 4n) and138Ba(13C,6n) reactions. The decay scheme of a high-spin isomer of145Sm was established. The excitation energy and the spin-parity of the isomer were determined to be 8.8 MeV and (49/2+), respectively. The level scheme was extended up to the (65/2) state at 14.6 MeV. The experimental results were discussed comparing with the deformed independent particle model (DIPM) calculation.

    Notes: Abstract High-spin states of148Tb were studied by inbeam γ-ray spectroscopic techniques using141Pr(13C,6n)148Tb and27Al(130Te,9n)148Tb reactions. The level scheme of148Tb was established up to the excitation energy of 11.8MeV. The excitation energy of the high-spin isomer reported previously was revised to be 8.620MeV. The excited states below the isomer could be understood as resulted from the weak couplings of πh11/2 and νf7/2 to those of147Gd and147Tb, respectively.

    Description: Earlier, using the X-ray satellite ASCA, we had identified the soft gamma-ray burst repeater (SGR) 1806-20 with a persistent X-ray source, AX 1805.7-2025 which is located close to the center of the radio supernova remnant G10.0-0.3. A burst seen by Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) was shown to be centered on G10.0-0.3. Here we report detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the persistent source. We find that AX 1805.7-2025 is a very compact source, size less than 30 sec in diameter, with a power-law spectrum. The count rate from AX 1805.7-2025 is steady on timescales of minutes, days, and 1 week. Most supernova remnants have extended X-ray emission ascribed to shocked gas. We set an upper limit to an extended X-ray emission both in continuum and line emission. We conclude that an isolated neutron star, most likely a pulsar, powers the radio remnant G10.0-0.3. Finally, we note that the persistent spectrum appears to be less absorbed than the burst spectrum.

    Description: Adopting the hypothesis of accretion-induced magnetic field decay in neutron stars, the consequent evolution of a neutron star's spin and magnetic field are calculated. The results are consistent with observations of binary and millisecond radio pulsars. Thermomagnetic effects could provide a possible physical mechanism for such accretion-induced field decay.

    Description: The paper reports partially simultaneous observations of the 'rapid burster' (MXB 1730-335) at X-ray, infrared, and radio wavelengths, covering several hundred hours during 1979 and 1980. None of the authors of this report saw any infrared or radio bursts. On several occasions an absence of infrared bursting was observed during X-ray bursting. On one occasion an absence of X-ray bursting was observed during a radio burst (4.1 GHz) reported by Calla et al. (1979). To date, radio bursts (a total of at least a dozen) have been reported only by Calla et al. (1980). Considering these and other observations summarized here, the reported radio bursts are either unreal or do not bear a simple relation to the X-ray bursts from the 'rapid burster'. The status of the reported infrared bursts also remain ambiguous. Limits to the brightness of any persistent radio source at the position of MXB 1730-335, limits to persistent X-ray emission during an extended X-ray quiet phase, and a measurement of the infrared polarization in the direction of the X-ray source are also reported.

    Description: Methods of obtaining information about the geometry of X-ray burster systems from simultaneous optical and X-ray observations are discussed, and such simultaneous observations of 4U/MXB 1636-53 are reported. The physical idea of an optical burst being due to reprocessing of an X-ray burst in material in the vicinity of the compact object is discussed. The resulting modification of the X-ray burst signal is described in terms of an optical response function. Delay and smearing due to radiative processes are discussed along with those due to the geometry. For 4U/MXB 1636-53, the estimated delay is 2.5 seconds, the smearing is less than four seconds, and the maximum temperature of the reprocessing region is about 75,000 K. The projected area of the reprocessing region is about 6 x 10 to the 21st square cm. The neutron star is about 1.4 solar masses, the radius of the accretion disk is greater than 1.5 lt-sec, and the mass of the Roche lobe filling companion star is less than 2.0 solar masses, corresponding to a binary period between about one and ten hours.

    Description: Observations of simultaneous optical and X-ray bursts from 4U/MXB 1636-53 were made using the Hakucho burst monitor system and optical telescopes at the European Southern Observatory during 1979 and 1980. The six best cases among the 10 coinciding observations are analyzed in terms of a model in which the optical emission is the result of reprocessing of X-rays (through blackbody heating). From this analysis, the temperature (spatially averaged) and size of a reprocessor, and the smearing and delay of the optical bursts are obtained. For the maximum temperatures of the optical reprocessor, the values differ from burst to burst, ranging from about 3 x 10 to the 4th to about 10 to the 5th K. The present analysis suggests that the size of the reprocessor varies by a factor of a few. For the smearing of the optical bursts an upper limit of a few seconds is derived. The most important result of this analysis is that the delay times are not the same for all bursts. The possible constraints which these results put on a low-mass binary model of this burst source are discussed.

    Description: An exhaustive search of the Ginga data on gamma-ray burst GB870303 reveals two separate time intervals during which statistically significant line features are evident. One (previously unreported) interval shows a single prominent line feature at about 20 keV; a second, corresponding to the interval reported by Murakami et al. (1988), shows two line features at 20 and 40 keV. From model fits to the data, we find that both sets of lines are well-described by cyclotron resonant scattering in a magnetic field B around 1.8 x 10 exp 12 G, and that the differences in the line strengths between the two intervals are significant. The variations are qualitatively similar to those produced by a change in the viewing angle theta relative to the magnetic field. We conjecture that the change in theta is due to rotation of the neutron star, and derive limits of 45-180 sec on the rotation period P.
