Notes: Abstract Content ratios of strontium (Sr) to calcium (Ca) in the otolith of Conger myriaster metamorphosing leptocephali and elvers increased with increasing increment number from the core to the 110th increment and subsequently decreased. The otolith region from the 110th increment to the edge corresponded to the metamorphic stage. The Sr:Ca ratios in otolith edges of metamorphosing leptocephali were inversely related to metamorphic stage, suggesting that the changes in otolith Sr:Ca ratios were influenced by some physiological factor(s) rather than by environmental factors. Sr concentration in leptocephalus somatic tissues was high and decreased as metamorphosis progressed until the late metamorphic stage when the preanal myomere to total myomere ratio was 0.4. Ca concentration was constant throughout ontogenesis. Body Sr:Ca ratios markedly decreased as metamorphosis progressed. Decrease in somatic Sr concentration and the consequent decrease in body Sr:Ca ratios seemed to be associated with the breakdown of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) in gelatinous matrix, which is the major constituent of soft tissue in leptocephali. Catabolism of GAG may also cause a decrease in otolith Sr:Ca ratios during metamorphosis. In leptocephalus otoliths, Sr:Ca ratios may change in association with the synthesis and breakdown of GAGs during ontogeny.

Description: Elastic properties of B2‐Fe0.67Ni0.06Si0.27 (15 wt.% Si) alloy have been investigated by combined high‐resolution inelastic X‐ray scattering and powder X‐ray diffraction in diamond anvil cells up to 100 GPa at room temperature. Densities (ρ), compressional (VP) and shear (VS) wave velocities were extrapolated to inner core conditions to enable comparison with the preliminary reference Earth model. The modeled aggregate compressional and shear wave velocities and densities of the two‐phase mixture of B2‐Fe0.67Ni0.06Si0.27 and hcp‐Fe‐Ni are consistent with inner core PREM values of VP, VS, and ρ based on a linear mixing model with 30(5) vol % B2‐Fe0.67Ni0.06Si0.27 and 70(5) vol % hcp Fe‐Ni, which corresponds to ∼3–5 wt.% Si and ∼5–12 wt.% Ni.
Description: Plain Language Summary: The composition of the inner core holds key information about how Earth evolved and how current processes such as the geomagnetic field work. Because the core cannot be directly sampled, our best estimates of its composition are based on the comparison of geophysical data with laboratory measurements of candidate materials. Decades of study have shown the inner core to be composed mainly of iron (with a minor amount of nickel) alloyed with one or more light elements, such as silicon. However, the effect of Si on the geophysical properties of Fe‐Ni alloys is not well established. In this study, we performed laboratory experiments to determine the density and sound velocity of Fe‐Ni‐Si alloy under extreme pressure conditions. We compared our results with seismological determinations and found that Earth's inner core can be accounted for by a mechanical mixture of cubic Fe‐Ni‐Si and hexagonal Fe‐Ni alloys. This mixture has a bulk composition of ∼3–5 weight % Si and ∼5–12 weight % Ni and is consistent with geophysical constraints.
Description: Key Points: Sound velocities and densities of B2‐Fe‐Ni‐Si alloy are determined at high pressure, up to 100 GPa, using inelastic X‐ray scattering and X‐ray diffraction. Seismologically observed compressional and shear wave velocities and density of Earth's inner core can be accounted for by a two‐phase mixture of 30 vol % B2‐Fe‐Ni‐Si and 70 vol % hcp Fe‐Ni alloys. Extrapolated results at inner core boundary conditions are consistent with an inner core composition containing ∼3–5 wt.% Si and ∼5–12 wt.% Ni.

Notes: Summary The effects of intraventricular administration of 6-hydroxydopamine on electrodermal activity were studied in cats. The treatment slowed down or eliminated habituation of the skin conductance response to repeated auditory stimuli. However, the impairment of habituation was not accompanied by an increase in the rate of spontaneous skin conductance fluctuation.

Notes: Abstract A very high level of vanadium was found to be contained in the polychaete worm Pseudopotamilla occelata collected in 1992–1993 from the Sanriku coast on the main island of Japan. The vanadium concentration (mean±SD=5500±1800 μg g-1 dry wt) in the worm's branchial crown which is composed of many bipinnate radioles was approximately 100 times higher than that (mean±SD=60±25 μg g-1 dry wt) in the trunk body. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis revealed that a large amount of vanadium was present in the outer potion of the epidermis of the bipinnate radiole. Analytical electron microscopy for a cryo-section of the bipinnate radioles indicated that vanadium was localized in electron-dense deposits in the apical portion of epidermal cells. From an examination of the fine structures, the locality of the electron-dense deposits were found to correspond to that of the apical vacuoles in the epidermal cells. It was concluded that most of the vanadium in P. occelata was contained in the vacuoles of the epidermal cells of the bipinnate radioles.

Notes: Abstract Starvation tolerance of laboratory-reared larval stone flounder, Kareius bicoloratus, was examined at different temperatures and salinities during the winters of 1984, 1985 and 1986. Starvation tolerance decreased with increased temperature and exhibited low values with high salinities. The highest starvation tolerance observed at low salinity was just before the metamorphosis stage. Starvation tolerance showed little change until larvae were 11 d. It increased with age thereafter. Epithelial cell heights of the digestive tract and cell diameters of pancreas and liver were measured histologically in reared stone flounder during growth and starvation. These values decreased markedly in the starved condition. Aldehyde fuchsin positive granules in the rectal epithelium also disappeared during the short starved period. The nutitrional condition of wild-caught stone flounder larvae, collected in January and February 1986 from the Matsukawa-ura inlet, Fukushima, Japan, was also examined. Eighty percent of larvae were estimated to be in fed condition just before sampling. The changes in cell heights of digestive organs agreed with this estimate. These histological methods seem to be useful in assessing the nutritional condition of marine fish larvae.

Notes: Abstract  Seedlings of papaya (Carica papaya L. var. Solo) were transplanted to pots with or without an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus (Gigaspora margarita Becker and Hall). After 3 months, half the plants were subjected to water stress by withdrawing irrigation. The leaf water potential (LWP) was measured during 20 days of water-stress treatment and then the plants were harvested. Root ethylene and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) concentrations were measured and plant fresh weight determined. The LWP decreased during the water-stress treatment and this decrease was more severe in the non-AM plants. Plant fresh weight was higher for AM than non-AM plants under both conditions. Under well-irrigated conditions, the ethylene concentration in the roots was increased by the presence of AM, although there was no significant difference between AM and non-AM roots in ACC levels. ACC increased in both AM and non-AM roots under water-stress conditions. The water-stress treatment resulted in a marked increase in ethylene concentration in non-AM roots but the concentration in AM roots was slightly lower than under normal conditions.

Notes: Abstract A non-local theory of hopping conduction is developed on the basis of the relaxation mode theory. An application of this theory to the ultrasonic attenuation is made, in which the attenuation by particles hopping on a doubly periodic lattice is investigated in the presence of the piezoelectric coupling. It turns out that in case of particle-hopping on a lattice with equivalent sites, the attenuation formula of Hutson and White can be reproduced when the lowest order approximation inq, the wave number, is taken into account.
