    Notes: A numerical computation is carried out to study the interaction of rotation and natural convection inside a finite horizontal cylinder. The natural convection is due to differential heating on the two ends, while the rotation is along the axis of the horizontal cylinder. The aspect ratio, length of the cylinder to its radius, is 2.0. The Grashof number is fixed at 1.43 × 106 with air as a working fluid. The effect of rotation is examined with Gr/Re2 from 7.0 × 10-2 to ∞, which covers the range from rotation dominated flow to buoyancy dominated flow. It is found that when rotational speed is relatively small or Gr/Re2 » 1, the effect of rotation is to render the spatial heat flux distribution more uniform. As the rotational speed increases, the heat transfer rate distribution on the end surfaces is more homogenous and its level is also reduced. When the rotational speed is sufficiently high (Gr/Re2 « 1.0), heat transfer is by conduction only and the whole fluid inside the enclosure rotates as a rigid body. It is shown that there exists a rotation speed range in which one can have both relatively high and uniform heat transfer rates on the end walls.

    Notes: This research examined culture parameters influencing the rate of degradation of lignin in lignocellulosic substrates by the Basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Thermomechanical pulps prepared from western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and red alder (Alnus rubra) were chosen as model substrates. Degradation of lignin in shallow, liquid-phase, stationary cultures was 10 times as rapid as in agitated cultures. Lignin degradation was at least 50% more rapid in cultures under 100% O2 than in those under air. Addition of 0.12% nutrient N (dry pulp basis) increased the rate of lignin degradation two- to fivefold; 1.2% added N at first suppressed, then stimulated, lignin degradation. Lignin in the alder pulp was degraded over five times as rapidly as in the hemlock pulp. Addition of glucose (35% of dry pulp) to the pulps containing 0.12% added N completely suppressed polysaccharide depletion during two weeks, but did not influence lignin degradation. The maximum rate of lignin degradation was 3%/day over a two-week incubation, or approximately 2.9 mg/mg fungal cell protein/day. The influence of the examined parameters was in complete accord with those found earlier for synthetic 14C-lignin metabolism by P. chrysosporium.

    Notes: Growth of Streptomyces tendae was investigated in submerged culture. Images of several mycelia were analyzed by means of an image-processing system. The studies revealed that tip growth angles and branching outgrowth angles could be regarded as normally distributed. Based on these results, a random model for directional growth of hyphal tips as well as directional growth of branches is proposed. This model shows curved elongation of hyphal tips, so that the morphological development of a mycelium up to the formation of a pellet is predicted, similar to that observed in nature.

    Notes: A mathematical model for apical growth, septation, and branching of mycelial microorganisms is presented. The model consists of two parts: the determinstic part of the model is based on fundamental cellular and physical mechanisms; it represents the kinetics for growth of hyphal tips and septation of apical as well as intercalary compartments. In regard to random occurrences of hyphal growth and branching, the stochastic part deals with branching processes, tip growth directions, and outgrowth orientations of branches. The model can explain the morphological development of mycelia up to the formation of pellets. The results, as predicted by the model, correspond very closely to those observed in experiments. In addition, some unmeasured states can be ascertained, such as the distribution functions of hyphal length (biomass) and tips along pellet radii.

    Notes: This paper presents a control-volume-based finite difference method in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates on a local basis in which the vectors and tensors are all based on the general curvilinear coordinates for buoyant flow calculations in arbitrary three-dimensional geometries. The governing equations are transformed from Cartesian co-ordinates into generalized curvilinear co-ordinates. After integrating the set of equations for the control volumes, the finite difference equations are then formulated by a proper treatment of the heat flux and stress tensors and by incorporating the QUICK scheme for the convective terms. The solution procedure then follows the one for three-dimensional Cartesian co-ordinates.Examples are given in problems of natural convection in such three-dimensional enclosures as parallelepiped enclosures and horizontal closed cylinders with differentially heated ends. In the latter case, important applications have been found in crystal growth by means of chemical vapour deposition in a cylindrical ampoule, in which uniform heat fluxes along the two ends are required in order to produce high-quality crystals. Special attention is given to the insertion of baffles in the cylinder to improve the recirculating flow patterns near the two ends.

    Notes: This consolidation of unidirectional APC-2 was studied experimentally to determine the effects of processing parameters (pressure, temperature, and number of layers) on resin flow as measured by the Kozeny constant and the bulk modulus. The Kozeny constant obtained was between 0.0205 and 0.107. It was found to depend on the consolidation pressure, temperature, number of layers, and their interactions at a 99% confidence level. The value of the bulk modulus was found to be between 1.21 MPa (175 psi) and 8.58 MPa (1244 psi). It also was found to depend on the temperature, pressure, number of plies, and their interactions at a 99% confidence level. These results show the critical effects of fiber orientation on resin flow during processing.
