Notes: Summary The effects of intraventricular administration of 6-hydroxydopamine on electrodermal activity were studied in cats. The treatment slowed down or eliminated habituation of the skin conductance response to repeated auditory stimuli. However, the impairment of habituation was not accompanied by an increase in the rate of spontaneous skin conductance fluctuation.

Notes: Abstract Hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration of yellowtail blood elevated more than 30% during severe hypoxia for 35 or 40 min. About 40% of the hematocrit elevation is considered to have been caused by erythrocyte supply from the spleen, and about 60% by hemoconcentration due to water shift out of the circulating plasma. Osmotic swelling of erythrocytes is considered not to have occurred, judging from the constant level in the saturation index of the blood.

Notes: x ) films in a nitrogen atmosphere within the range 5×10-4–4×10-1 Torr. In the presence of a magnetic field, the emission intensities of N2 (second positive system) and CN species in the graphite ablation plumes were altered significantly, depending on the pressure of the N2 environment. Corresponding to an intense CN emission, a magnetic field-induced enhancement of N incorporation – for example, up to 37% at an N2 pressure of 300 mTorr – and the formation of sp3 tetrahedral CN bonding were both observed in the films. This suggests that the arrival of CN species at the substrate surface with kinetic energies is important for film deposition.

Notes: Summary The disposition of propranolol stereoisomers after administration of a single oral dose of the racemic drug was investigated in seven hyperthyroid patients before and after antithyroid drug therapy. The possibility of hypersensitivity to propranolol in the patients was evaluated by constructing plasma propranolol concentration — beta-blocking effect curves. There was no statistically significant difference in elimination half-life (t1/2) between (±)- and (−)-propranolol before and after antithyroid drug therapy. However, the plasma clearance ( $$\dot V_p $$ ) of (−)-propranolol was smaller than that of (±)-propranolol, and the difference was statistically significant after antithyroid drug therapy. Decreased $$\dot V_p $$ was observed in 3 aged hyperthyroid patients compared to the value after antithyroid drug therapy. $$\dot V_p $$ decreased or did not change in young patients after therapy. No significant difference was observed in the relationship between the tilt-induced pulse rate response and plasma propranolol concentration when treated patients became euthyroid compared to their response in the hyperthyroid state.

Notes: Abstract We performed an experimental study on a new drug delivery system that employs a porous hydroxyapatite block (HAb) (composition: Ca10 (PO4)6 (OH)2) to conduct sustained release of a chemotherapeutic agent. To confirm penetration of the agent into the HAb (2 cm3), an aqueous solution containing eosin dye was used at various vacuum pressures. To estimate the storage capacity of the HAb, blocks were weighed before and after being impregnated with the aqueous dye solutions, and the capacity of the block was calculated from the increase in weight after vacuum. In this slow-release study using vacuum, the anti-cancer drug methotrexate (MTX) was used in vitro. Four HAb (1 cm3) containing different concentrations of MTX, ranging from 1.22 to 2.38 mg per block, were studied. All were found to release the drug, maintaining a mean concentration of 0.22 to 0.32 μg/ml even after twelve days. This concentration is high enough to be effective against tumor cells. The results suggest that HAb impregnated with a chemotherapeutic agent using a simple vacuum system may serve as a valuable new method of administering local chemotherapy, primarily when used as a strut graft for bone defects. This new drug delivery system can also be used as an adjuvant material in extended curettage, which can also discourage recurrence of benign tumors without any risk of systemic toxicity. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Summary Based on Sr isotopic data for Tertiary and Quaternary basaltic rocks from the NE Japan arc, relationships are discussed between the temporal variation of magma source characteristics and the opening of the Japan Sea. The basaltic rocks from the trench side and from the transitional zone show initial87Sr/86Sr ratios (Sri ratios) in the range of 0.70411–0.70546 but no temporal variation in Sri ratios. The back-arc side basaltic rocks with ages of 29.8 to ≈ 15 Ma have Sri ratios similar to those of the trench side and the transitional zone, and these values also show no temporal change. In contrast, the basaltic rocks from the back-arc side, with ages younger than ≈ 15 Ma, show significantly lower Sri ratios (0.70396 to 0.70290), which are slightly higher than those of N-type MORB. These Sr isotopic features may imply that at least before ≈ 15 Ma the magma source regions (the sub-continental mantle) beneath the NE Japan arc had an enriched chemical character and that after ≈ 15 Ma, the magma sources for volcanic rocks from the back-arc side show a drastic change in Sr isotopic character, from an enriched nature to a depleted one. The depleted magmas may have been formed as a result of injection of depleted asthenosphere (or of a depleted mantle diapir) into the subcontinental mantle under the back-arc side of the NE Japan arc, during the spreading of the Japan Sea back-arc basin. The middle Miocene basaltic rocks from the back-arc side are characterized by lower contents of LIL elements such as K2O and Rb compared with those from the trench side, suggesting that during the middle Miocene (syn-opening stage of the Japan Sea) the degree of partial melting may have been higher in the back-arc side mantle than in the trench side mantle. High degree of partial melting in the back-arc side mantle can be attributed to an increasing geothermal gradient in the mantle due to the injection of hot asthenosphere. This injection might also have caused the melting of the lower crust from which the voluminous middle Miocene acidic volcanics in the back-arc side and transitional zone may have been produced.

Notes: Abstract  The spin-label method was used to study the structure and molecular motion of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains adsorbed on a silica-tethered poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Spin-labelled PEO with a narrow molecular weight distribution, having number averaged molecular weight (M N)=6.0×103, was adsorbed on the surface of the silica-tethered PMMA with various grafting ratios in carbon tetrachloride solution at 35 °C. ESR spectra were measured at various temperatures after the samples were completely dried. The ESR spectra are composed of two spectra arising from spin-labels attached to “train” and “tail” segments, which are strongly and weakly interacted with the silica surface, respectively. The fractional amount of the “tail” segments increases extremely with the grafting ratio of PMMA. Molecular mobility of the PEO chains estimated from the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra also decreases significantly with the grafting ratio of PMMA. Structure and molecular motion of the PMMA chains tethered on the silica were also studied using the spin-labelled PMMA. Consequently, parts of the PEO segments penetrate into the PMMA chains and is adsorbed on the silica surface (“train” segments), whereas parts of the PMMA segments protrude from the surface. The other PEO segments are entangled with the tethered PMMA chains (“tail” segments).

Notes: Abstract  We examined the effects of salt on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and lower critical solution pressure (LCSP) of aqueous solutions of poly (N-vinylisobutyramide), polyNVIBA, and compared them with those on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), polyNIPAAm. We found that the addition of salt (such as Na2SO4, NaCl, or KCl) decreased the LCST of aqueous polyNVIBA from 45 °C to below 20 °C, almost linearly with the salt concentrations and dependent on the type of salt. We observed a similar concentration-dependent decrease in LCST for polyNIPAAm. When KI or NaSCN was added to each aqueous polymer solution, some smaller increases in LCST were observed at relatively low salt concentrations; higher concentrations of salt gave an almost linear decrease in LCST. As for LCSP, the addition of most types of salt lowered the transition pressure, but the effects were much more dependent on the type and the valence of the salt (especially of anion) in both polymers. Salt with divalent anion showed a larger decrease in LCSP, but those with mono valent anion showed a relatively small decrease, even showed a slight increase at lower salt concentrations in the case of polyNVIBA. Salt with I- or SCN- showed evident increases in LCSP up to 1 M and was maintained higher than the control even at 2 M. We discuss the interactions of the amide group in the side chains of polymers and water and their perturbation by ions.
