Notes: Abstract. We examine in detail the asymptotic behaviors of the number of comparisons used in Batcher's sorting algorithm and a quantity arising in analyzing the rectangle heuristic for finding minimum Euclidean matching due to Supowit and Reingold. We put forth methods (elementary and analytic) for computing the Fourier coefficients of periodic functions appearing in the asymptotic expansions of these quantities. The methods consist of the approach by Flajolet and Golin for divide-and-conquer recurrences and van der Corput's method from analytic number theory for exponential sums.

Notes: Summary A theoretical analysis has been carried out to investigate the kinetics involved in the CuInS2 crystal growth by the travelling-heater method. A numerical scheme is developed to compute the temperature gradient at any point inside the system. A numeric estimate of the maximum growth rate was obtained as a suggestion for setting the travelling speed of the heater in the practical experiment.

Notes: Summary A theoretical analysis has been carried out to investigate the kinetics involved in the CVD growth of CuInS2. A stagnant-layer model is assumed for the numerical, simulation. Computational results for the growth rate as a function of the substrate temperature, mean, gas velocity and partial pressures in the reaction tube are obtained. This analysis indicates that the substrate temperature plays a dominant role in the growth rate, which is consistent with our experimental data.

Notes: Abstract Alumina with a sputter-deposited metal film was diffusion bonded to Inconel 600. A higher bonding strength and lower joining temperature were obtained with titanium coating compared to that for the non-coated sample. The improved joining behaviour was attributed to an enhanced interface reaction and reduction in the thermal stress. Also, the effect of various coatings of 3 μm thickness on the mechanical property of alumina after heat treatment at 1000 °C for 30 min under 10−6 torr vacuum was evaluated in terms of modulus of rupture (MOR) using a Weibull plot. While the Cu coating did not change MOR strength of alumina, the reactive Ti and Zr metal coatings caused a noticeable reduction in averaged MOR strength. The effect of co-sputtering of Ti-Cu, and bilayer coatings of Cu/Ti and Ti/Cu was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract The fluid motion of an assemblage of cohesionless granules is governed by the balance laws of mass, momentum and energy and is special because due to the variability of the mean free path of the particles the density is not preserved and the particle fluctuation energy (= granular temperature) is determined together with the mean fields. Constitutive equations are postulated for the dispersive pressure, viscosity, “thermal diffusivity” and energy annihilation rate in terms of the mean free path length, the time of encounter between two collisions and geometric and dynamic quantities via dimensional arguments. The model defines the time of encounter to consist of the free flying time between collisions plus the contact duration. The inclusion of the latter brings in the elasticity of the particles and introduces a relaxation mechanism that explains the typical behaviour of shear and fluidized layers better than has been done by previous models.
