    Notes: Abstract  Sequences of Aotus nancymaae immunoglobulin kappa light-chain rearrangements were analyzed after reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Among 22 in-frame rearrangements analyzed, 12 IGKV genes belonging to the families 1, 2, or 3 were identified. Aotus counterparts for all five human IGKJ genes were found. The identity of the deduced human and Aotus amino acid sequences was between 83% and 92% for junctional regions and 74% for the constant region. Sequence comparisons between rearrangements indicated that somatic mutations, the addition of nongermline-encoded nucleotides, and exonuclease trimming contribute to the generation of diversity of Aotus immunoglobulin kappa chains. The high identity of Aotus and human IGK genes is comparable to that of T-cell receptor genes and further supports the proposal to use the Aotus Plasmodium falciparum infection model for the evaluation of malaria vaccine candidates.

    Notes: Abstract We report here the results of mapping a set of 92 leaf cDNA clones in maize. The ends of each of these cDNA clones have previously been partially sequenced, and the sequence comparison has revealed the putative function for 28 clones. It is expected that the RFLP map developed using these expressed sequence tags will be of great importance for future maize genome analysis, such as for PCR-based gene mapping or gene function identification.

    Notes: Abstract  To gain information on the extent and nature of genetic variation in Elymus alaskanus, levels and distribution of genetic variation were assessed within and among 13 populations originating from Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Russia using allozymes. The results showed that four (30.7%) of the 13 loci were polymorphic within the species, while the mean percentage of polymorphic loci within the populations was 1.9%. The mean number of alleles per locus for the species was 1.8 and 1.02 across the populations. Genetic diversity at the species level was low (H es=0.135), and mean population diversity was notably lower (H ep=0.005). A high degree of genetic differentiation was observed among populations. The salient points emerging from this study are: (1) statistically significant differences were found in allele frequencies among populations for every polymorphic locus (P〈0.001), (2) the high mean coefficient of gene differentiation (G ST) showed that 95% of the total allozyme variation was attributable to differences among populations, and (3) relatively high genetic distances between the populations were obtained (mean D=0.16). The Norwegian populations had the highest genetic diversity as compared with the other populations. Geographical comparisons revealed three different groups of populations clearly differentiated, i.e. Scandinavia (Norway and Sweden), Iceland and Russia. Cluster and principal coordinates analyses revealed the same genetic patterns of relationships among populations. Generally, this study indicates that E. alaskanus contains low allozymic variation in its populations. The implications of these results for the conservation of the species are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Activity coefficients for NaBr in the system NaBr+NaFormate+H2O at 25°C were determined from emf measurements at different total ionic strengths. At each total ionic strength, the measurements were carried out at different Na-Formate/NaBr ionic strength ratios. The experimental activity coefficients were comparatively analyzed using Scatchard's, Pitzer's and Lim's methods. Although all these models can be successfully applied to the analysis of this mixed system, the All Mixing Coefficients (LA) and Consistency Test (LT) models lead to better fittings than the others.

    Notes: Abstract Activity coefficients for NaBr in ethanol-water mixtures with 0, 20, 40, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 99.9 weight% of ethanol have been determined at 25°C from the emf measurements of the galvanic cells $$Na - glass/NaBr(m),H_2 O(100 - Y),EtOH(Y),AgBr_{(S)} /Ag$$ The results obtained were analyzed by using the Pitzer equation. Those for the mixtures with ethanol content higher than 60 wt% were also analyzed by using a chemical model and their ion pair formation constants, K A 0 , determined and examined. The results were compared with those for NaCl reported in a previous paper.

    Notes: Summary The larva of the bean pod weevil (BPW), Apion godmani Wagner (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), causes serious yield losses in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Mexico and Central America, by consuming the seed as it develops in the immature pod. Resistance to the BPW was identified in bean germplasm of highland Mexican origin, and these sources of resistance were incorporated into a pedigree breeding program to recover locally adapted lines resistant to Bean Common Mosaic Virus and BPW, with commercial grain for Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. These lines yielded as well as or better than local cultivars in the absence of the insect, and better than local cultivars when the BPW was present. Resistance appeared to be governed by several genes, and was stable across geographic areas, seasons and planting systems.

    Notes: Abstract This investigation was conducted to assess changes in the genetic structure of two varieties of two species of annual Brassica. Seeds of B. napus cv. “Topas” and B. rapa “Broccoletto” were sent to nine research institutes in different geographical areas of Europe for regeneration. The multiplied material was sent back after one year of regeneration and analysed electrophoretically. The original populations of each species and their multiplied samples were stained for 12 different enzymes, of which 4 were found to be polymorphic (DIA, SKD, GPI and PER). It was possible to detect considerable differences in isozyme patterns in B. napus and allelic frequencies in B. rapa, both within and between populations. When the original population was compared with the regenerated samples, the Chi-square homogeneity test for all pairwise comparisons revealed distinctness with a 99% probability for B. napus and 95% probability for B. rapa with one or more of the enzyme systems examined. Furthermore, the average of gene diversity analysis (Nei, 1973) revealed that some regenerated populations have less while others have increased genetic variation compared with the original population. These observations indicated that the frequencies were non-random and considerable shifts in genetic diversity have occurred during multiplication. In addition, different regeneration procedures have caused the fixation of certain alleles.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the genetic diversity of Linum usitatissimumL. in Sweden, 18 accessions, including 13 cultivars and five landraces, were analysed. This study was based on genetic variation in three enzyme systems (i.e., PGD, GPI and MDH) by using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. The total genetic diversity of the studied flax material was very high (H T= 0.62). Even though the highest genetic diversity lies within the accessions (G ST= 0.07), a clear differentiation between fibre and oil flax was found with respect to three polymorphic loci (Pgd-1, Gpi-2 and Mdh-1). A phenogram, based on Nei's genetic distances between the accessions studied, showed five clearly defined groups but with low variation within the groups. The unexpected high genetic diversity found within accessions in the studied flax material may indicate that flax is more outbreeding than earlier believed.

    Notes: Abstract A method is presented for incorporating the uncertainties associated with hypocentral locations in the formulation of probabilistic models of the time and space distributions of the activity of potential seismic sources, as well as of the resulting seismic hazard functions at sites in their vicinity. For this purpose, a bayesian framework of analysis is adopted, where the probabilistic models considered are assumed to have known forms and uncertain parameters, the distribution of the latter being the result of an a priori assessment and its updating through the incorporation of the direct statistical information, including the uncertainty associated with the relations between the actual hypocentral locations and the reported data. This uncertainty is incorporated in the evaluation of the likelihood function of the parameters to be estimated for a given sample of recorded locations. For the purpose of illustration, the method proposed is applied to the modelling of the seismic sources near a site close to the southern coast of Mexico. The results of two alternate algorithms for the incorporation of location uncertainties are compared with those arising from neglecting those uncertainties. One of them makes use of Monte Carlo simulation, while the other is based on a closed-form analytical integration following the introduction of some simplifying assumptions. For the particular case studied, accounting for location uncertainties gives place to significant changes in the probabilistic models of the seismic sources. Deviations of the same order of magnitude can be ascribed to differences in the mathematical and/or numerical tools used in the uncertainty analysis. The resulting variability of the seismic hazard at the site of interest is less pronounced than that affecting the estimates of activity of individual seismic sources.
