    Notes: Summary The grey alder compensates leaf area losses due to insect grazing by continuously producing new leaves throughout the vegetative period. Different degrees of defoliation were attained experimentally by a controlled release of the oligophagous beetle Agelastica alni on arbitrarily selected trees from a homogenous population of young alders. The reduction in leaf area per tree significantly influenced the density of leaf trichomes, assessed 10–30 days later, on newly sprouting leaves only. Cross-correlations between leaf area reduction and trichome density were strongest for leaves which completed unfolding 14–21 days after damage. Dualchoice assays suggested a negative influence of trichomes on oviposition rate of A. alni. Removal of trichomes by shaving demonstrated the highly significant effect of trichomes on feeding behavior of adults and larvae in dual-choice assays. The role of the induced increase in trichome density as a possible short-term defense reaction against herbivorous insects is discussed.

In a joint experiment the TAPS and CERES collaborations have studied the production of the neutral mesons $\pi^\circ,\eta$ and $\omega$ in 450 GeV p-Be and p-Au collisions at the CERN SPS. The mesons were identified by their $\pi^\circ\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ , $\eta\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ , and $\omega\rightarrow\pi^\circ\gamma$ decay modes. The cross sections were measured down to very low $p_T$ ( $\geq$ 20 MeV/c) near mid-rapidity ( $3.0 〈 y 〈 4.0$ ). The $\eta$ and $\omega$ cross sections are smaller than expected from extrapolations of earlier data to low $p_T$ . Integrated over all $p_T$ , the ratios $\eta/\pi^\circ$ and $\omega$ / $\pi^\circ$ are lower by about 25% compared to previously published values. The reduction may be attributed to the large number of low $p_T$ pions from decays of heavier mesons. In addition, we have studied the dependence of neutral meson production on the mass of the nuclear target and find it in good agreement with previous measurements of charged mesons.

    Notes: Abstract. In a joint effort the CERES/NA45 and TAPS collaborations have measured low-mass electron pairs in p–Be and p–Au collisions at 450 GeV/ $c$ at the CERN SPS. In the range covered up to $\approx$ 1.5 GeV/ $c^2$ the mass spectra from p–Be and p–Au collisions are well explained by electron pairs from decays of neutral mesons. For p–Au our result is new. For p–Be, the simultaneously measured electron pair inclusive pair spectrum in which instrumental uncertainties are highly reduced. We confirm the earlier finding of HELIOS-1 with significantly reduced systematic uncertainties of 23% in the mass range below 450 MeV/ $c^2$ , and of 28% in the mass range above 750 MeV/ $c^2$ at 90% confidence limit. Any unconventional source of electron pairs is limited by these error margins as the percentage fraction of the hadronic contribution.

    Notes: Abstract. Standard SU(2) Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory is extended in order to include the case of small or even vanishing quark condensate. The effective lagrangian is given to ${\cal O}(p^2)$ in its most general form and to ${\cal O}(p^3)$ in the scalar sector. A method is developed to efficiently construct the relativistic baryonic effective lagrangian for chiral SU(2) to all orders in the chiral expansion. As a first application, mass- and wave-function renormalization as well as the scalar form factor of the nucleon is calculated to ${\cal O}(p^3)$ . The result is compared to a dispersive analysis of the nucleon scalar form factor adopted to the case of a small quark condensate. In this latter analysis, the shift of the scalar form factor between the Cheng-Dashen point and zero momentum transfer is found to be enhanced over the result assuming strong quark condensation by up to a factor of two, with substantial deviations starting to be visible for $r=m_s/\hat{m}\lesssim 12$ .

    Notes: Abstract In Brassica crops differences in susceptibility to root fly attack can be largely attributed to antixenotic resistance. Plants of four genotypes (two swedes and two kales) with widely differing resistance in field trials, were compared in laboratory choice assays for their susceptibility to oviposition by the root flies Delia radicum (L.) and D. floralis (Fallen) (Diptera, Anthomyiidae). For both species the preference among the genotypes corresponded to the susceptibility of the genotypes in the field. The preference ranking in response to surrogate leaves treated with methanolic surface extracts of the four genotypes was identical to the preference among potted plants, demonstrating that chemical factors on the leaf surface mediate host preference for oviposition in these species. For both species of fly, glucosinolates are major oviposition stimulants and for D. radicum an additional, nonglucosinolate oviposition stimulant, presently called CIF, is known. We describe a procedure for chromatographic separation of glucosinolates from CIF in leaf surface extracts. In oviposition-choice assays with D. radicum, the CIF-fractions of the two swede genotypes applied to surrogate leaves received a 1.8 and 4.6 times higher proportion of eggs than the respective glucosinolate-fractions, confirming the major importance of CIF as an oviposition stimulant. The genotype of swede that was preferred by both fly species in tests with plants and methanolic leaf surface extracts, also stimulated oviposition more in tests with the glucosinolate-fractions or the CIF-fractions derived from the surface extracts, respectively. Thus, glucosinolates and CIF together account for the observed preference among the genotypes and may also be responsible for their susceptibility under field conditions. In the two kale genotypes the preference for plants or surface extracts differed from the preference among the corresponding glucosinolate- and CIF-fractions, indicating that additional, as yet unknown chemical factors may also be involved. For both groups of stimulants tarsal chemoreceptors allow electrophysiological monitoring of glucosinolate- and CIF-activity in fractionated surface extracts. For D. radicum the chemosensory activity of both glucosinolate- and CIF-fractions corresponded to the respective behavioural activity in the oviposition preference tests, suggesting that preference for oviposition among genotypes can be predicted from the electrophysiological activity of their fractions. The chemosensory response of D. floralis, in particular to the CIF-fractions, was less pronounced than the response of D. radicum, indicating interspecific differences in the perception of the major oviposition stimulants. We discuss the potential application of electrophysiological techniques in support of other screening methods used in breeding for root fly resistance in Brassica crops.

    Notes: Abstract Genetic lines and example cultivars are used as markers to define variation when describing or evaluating wild or cultivated germplasm. Occasionally genotypes previously described in the literature are no longer available. This was thought to be the case for chartreuse skin colour in Onion. However, registration authorities undertaking Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability tests recently observed this skin colour in the cultivar Greenella and have provided seed to a genebank for long-term conservation. This characteristic is suitable both for use as a genetic marker and as an example cultivar for describing Onion skin colours.
