Notes: Abstract 6Li+ (150 keV) was implanted into thin polypropylene foils at fluences of 1 x 1013 to 1 x 1014 cm−2. Subsequent neutron depth profiling measurements of the Li distributions revealed considerable deviations from the expected ballistic range profiles. This Li redistribution was simulated by a numerical computer calculation. The best fit between measurements and simulations was obtained by assuming that (i) Li redistributes immediately after its ballistic slowing-down, (ii) the Li mobility is enhanced in the radiation-damaged polymer region, the local diffusion enhancement being controlled by the target's electronic damage, (iii) mobile Li is readily trapped at radiation-induced defects, their density being proportional to the target's electronic damage, (iv) these traps are saturable ones, and (v) Li migration is not restricted to the ion track region, but proceeds also through the neighboring unirradiated bulk, though with slower speed.

Notes: Abstract.  Li salts of acrylic acid were grafted to poly- ethylene, PE. It is known that li is mobile in this material at room temperature, and hence can act as a probe for newly introduced defects. After irradiation of PE(Li) with 100 keV He+ ions at different fluences the Li depth distributions were measured by NDP. Changes in the Li distributions are observed which are ascribed to bonding at oxygen, the latter one preferentially penetrating into the PE via the irradiation-damaged sample surface. With increasing sample age, i.e. after exposure to ambient atmosphere for more than half a year, Li appears to lose its original mobility.

Notes: 6 Li+ ions were implanted into PMMA at high flux up to fluences of 1×1015 cm-2 under angles of 0° to 70° towards the surface normal. The Li depth distributions were determined by means of neutron depth profiling, and compared with theoretical simulations. The three-dimensional Li distribution was reconstructed from the one-dimensional depth profiles by means of a tomographic technique. It turned out that the measured Li depth distributions can be described by a superposition of Gaussian and exponential functions. This points at considerable Li mobility during or after the ion implantation, with trapping in unsaturable traps in the ion-irradiated region which roughly follow the electronic energy transfer distribution. The Li redistribution is more pronounced along the track direction than transversely to it. The normalized Li distributions in various implantation directions were fed into our tomographic program to reconstruct the three-dimensional distribution of the deposited lithium. As expected, the lithium preferentially distributes along the ion tracks. This work is another hint that mobility of implanted ions in solids does not proceed isotropically, but is strongly influenced by the radiation-damage distributions.

Notes: Abstract This study demonstrates the adhesion of macrophages to polymer beads from a copolymer of hydroxyethyl methacrylate and dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate intraperitoneally injected into the rat. Dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate exhibited a stimulatory effect on macrophage adhesion 5 h after injection of the beads. Electron microscopy demonstrated protein adsorption on the surface of the beads. Protein fibres between the cell surface and beads were observed. The experimental system used minimizes the influence of tissue damage at macrophage recognition of polymers. This method seems to be suitable for short-term investigation of macrophage-polymer interaction.

Notes: Abstract The surface modification of glycol methacrylate intraocular lenses by selective alkaline hydrolysis was studied in order to find the conditions for improvement in biocompatibility and simultaneous preservation of good optical properties of these gels. It was found that the thickness of the modified layer can be influenced by the reaction temperature, NaOH concentration and reaction time. Using at least 30% NaOH, short reaction times and temperatures of at least 90°C, lenses with good optical properties and with carboxylic groups in the surface layer were prepared. The method may be useful for obtaining hydrophilic medical materials with improved properties and increased biocompatibility.

Notes: The effect of anionic carboxylate groups in copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with sodium methacrylate on the adsorption of albumin, adhesion, spreading and fusion of macrophages has been demonstrated. The results show an inhibitory effect of increasing concentration of carboxylate groups of polymers on all studied parameters.

Notes: Abstract Blood platelet and monocyte adhesion was studied in vitro with respect to the influence of hydrophilic polymer chemical functional groups and their charge. The results showed that the strongest adhesion of human monocytes was to coverslips covered with cationic polymer. Platelet adhesion to all tested polymers proved to be negligible; no differences related to the charge of the polymers used were observed. These results show the obvious difference between the biocompatibility and haemocompatibility in vitro which must be taken into consideration during polymer biological properties testing before clinical trials.

Notes: Abstract The keratinocytes are able to migrate from the poly (2- hydroxyethylmethacrylate) disc if it is transfered to the new Petri-dish colonized with irradiated 3T3 mouse fibroblasts, and form a ring-shaped colony around the disc. The phenotypic characterization of human keratinocytes migrated from these discs was studied using a group of monoclonal antibodies. The keratinocytes in the external periphery of the colony of cells which migrated from the disc express the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), α2, α3 chains and α5β1 integrin receptor. A protein of the desmosome complex, desmoplakin-1, was also expressed. Involucrin and cytokeratin-10 were expressed after prolonged cultivation. These results suggest that the migrated keratinocytes are able to proliferate, recognize extracellular matrix molecules important in the process of the re-epitelization of the wound, and terminally differentiate in vitro. They are encouraging for further experiments with respect to the development of a support for keratinocyte cultivation and for grafting in clinical practice.

Notes: Summary The influence of soft contact lenses (SCL) with low (37%, L) and high (65%, H) water content on rabbit corneas was investigated. The lenses were worn continuously for 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 14, 21 or 28 days. The changes in corneal transparency, hydration and enzyme activities were studied. A slight change in corneal transparency due to higher hydration caused by a decreased activity of Na+−K+-dependent adenosine triphosphatase (Na+−K+-ATPase) in the corneal endothelium is followed by a decrease in the activity of γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Slight morphological disturbances appear within 4 days in animals wearing SCL (L). SCL (H) produce similar changes one week later. Subsequently, the corneal epithelium becomes thinner and changes in the size of corneal endothelial cells are obvious. Disturbances of enzyme activities in cells of all corneal layers are present. In the epithelium highly increased activities of acid glycosidases, acid phosphatase, and dipeptidyl peptidase I and II, in keratocytes decreased activities of alkaline phosphatase and GGT, and in the endothelium decreased activity of Na+−K+-ATPase and GGT were found. These changes are more severe after SCL (L). In this case, inflammatory cells displaying high activities of lysosomal hydrolases appear in the anterior part of the stroma during the 3rd and 4th weeks and local degradation of glycosaminoglycans and proteins takes place. In contrast, after SCL (H) a remarkable thinning of the corneas was observed during extended wear, accompanied by decreased stainability of stromal glycosaminoglycans and highly decreased enzyme activities in keratocytes. The histochemical methods proved very useful in the assessment of tesions caused by a continuous wear of SCL.
