    Notes: Abstract We study the effects of growth and changes in the external terms of trade on protection. There are two sectors, an urban sector and a rural sector, and trade policy is used to redistribute income between them. We show that growth precedes trade liberalization. In addition, we find that trade reform is triggered by falls in the world prices of primary exports or intermediate imports. These results are shown to hold for tariffs and quotas.

    Notes: Abstract Many possible explanations have been suggested for the January effect, with tax considerations receiving the most attention. This analysis suggests a new explanation. The data show that money supply announcements during January contribute at least as much as tax considerations to explaining stock returns during the first five trading days in January. The seasonal behavior of money during December and January appears to be responsible for the money-supply-announcement effect. In addition, the end-of-year seasonal pattern of the money supply is present in other countries and was present before the adoption of personal taxes, so money supply announcements may offer a more consistent explanation of the January effect than tax considerations.

    Notes: Abstract  The carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of 18 faunistic groups collected during the 39th cruise of the R.V. “Akademik Mstislav Keldysh” in September 1996 at the Broken Spur vent field, MAR, was studied. The trophic structure of the Broken Spur vent community is considered. All age stages of the shrimp Rimicaris exoculata living 5 m below the main aggregations at black smokers show higher δ15N and more depleted δ13C values than the same stages inhabiting the black smokers themselves. The shrimps R. exoculata and Chorocaris chacei demonstrate ontogenetic changes in δ13C (the former also in δ15N), with smaller individuals showing higher δ15N and more depleted δ13C values than larger shrimps. Benthopelagic and benthic components of the vent community differ significantly in δ13C and δ15N, the benthic fauna being less dependent upon chemosynthetic production.

    Notes: Abstract The middle and eastern parts of the Northern Calcareous Alps (NCA) can be subdivided into two distinct units with a lateral boundary marked by abrupt changes in the conodont colour alteration index (CAI-values). The first of these is a northern unit (Tirolikum) with a relatively homogeneous distribution of no or low grade conodont alteration (CAI 1.0–2.0). The thermal overprint is thought to be relatively young and related to a heat flow from the Tauern crystallization. The second unit consists of the Juvavic nappe system (Juvavikum), which is distributed along the southern rim of the NCA but also covers some of the northern parts of the Tirolikum. With respect to its CAI-distribution the Juvavikum is more heterogeneous on a regional and local scale, with some local CAI-inversions. The Juvavikum additionally shows distinctly different sets of CAI-values one with weak (CAI 1.0–1.5) and another with strong alteration (CAI 5.5–7.0) — at present the highest known thermal overprint measured in the NCA. The metamorphism is relatively old as it predates the Late Jurassic—Early Cretaceous gravity tectonic emplacement of the Juvavikum onto the Tirolikum. The high CAI-values of parts of the Juvavic nappe system are though to be related to tectonic burial in an accretionary wedge formed parallel to the closure of the ‘Vardar’ Ocean. The low CAI values of the Tirolikum apparently exclude a direct juxtaposition of the two units at the time of metamorphism.

    Notes: Abstract  Box and gravity cores recovered from the Håkon Mosby mud volcano (HMMV) during cruise 15 of the R/V Professor Logachev were analyzed for bacterial activity and benthic fauna distribution. The high bacterium number (up to 9.6×109 cells cm-3 of the sediment) and marked rates of sulfate reduction (up to 0.155 mg S dm-3 day-1) and methane oxidation (up to 9.9 μg C dm-3 day-1) were shown for the upper horizons of the sediments of the HMMV peripheral zone. The benthic community is characterized by the presence of two pogonophoran species, Oligobrachia sp. and Sclerolinum sp., harboring symbiotic methanotrophic bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract  The pore waters of CH4-containing sediments of the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano were rich in NH+ 4, Br-, and I-; exhibited a high total alkalinity; but were poor in Cl-and SO2- 4. The geological evidence and our data suggest that organic matter decomposition in preglacial or early interglacial sediments took place during early diagenesis (bacterial processes) and during metamorphism (thermogenic processes under the 3100-m-thick layer of glacial sediments), accompanied by mud volcano fluid generation. It is argued that the CH4of the mud volcano sediments has a mixed, biogenic and thermogenic, origin.

    Notes: Abstract Rates of carbon dioxide assimilation and methane oxidation were determined in various zones of the Rainbow Hydrothermal Field (36°N) of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In the plume above the hydrothermal field, anomalously high methane content was recorded, the microbial population density (up to 105 cells/ml) was an order of magnitude higher than the background values, and the CO2 assimilation rate varied from 0.01 to 1.1 μg C/(l day). Based on the data on CO2 assimilation, the production of organic carbon due to bacterial chemosynthesis in the plume was calculated to be 930 kg/day or 340 tons/year (about 29% of the organic carbon production in the photic zone). In the black smoke above active smokers, the microbial population density was as high as 106 cells/ml, the rate of CO2 assimilation made up 5–10 μg C/(l day), the methane oxidation rate varied from 0.15 to 12.7 μl/(l day), and the methane concentration ranged from 1.05 to 70.6 μl/l. In bottom sediments enriched with sulfides, the rate of CO2 assimilation was at least an order of magnitude higher than in oxidized metal-bearing sediments. At the base of an active construction, whitish sediment was found, which was characterized by a high methane content (92 μl/dm3) and a high rate of methane oxidation (1.7 μl/(dm3 day)).
