Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary 1. The marine red algaLenormandia prolifera containsα-cryptoxanthin, a monohydroxy derivative ofα-carotene, as well asα- and β-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. 2. Chlorophylla and a trace of chlorophyllidea is present but no chlorophylld. 3. The chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio is 2.5 ± 0.7 (w/w), falling within the range reported for other species of the Rhodophyta. 4. α-Carotene is more abundant thanβ-carotene while lutein is the most abundant xanthophyll;α-cryptoxanthin accounts for only 2.4% of the total carotenoid content. 5. The possibility that theAmansia group is distinguished by containingα-cryptoxanthin and moreα- thanβ-carotene is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract We present two related categorical constructions. Given a category C, we construct a category C[d], the category of directed systems in C. C embeds into C[d], and if C has enough colimits, then C is monadic over C[d]. Also, if E,M is a factorization structure for C, then C[d] has a related factorization structure Ed Md such that if E consists entirely of monic arrows, then so does Ed and the Ed-quotient poset of an object A is naturally the poset of directed downsets of the E-quotient poset of A. Similarly, if M consists entirely of monicarrows, then so does Md and the Md-subobject poset of an object A is naturally the poset of directed downsets of the M-subobject poset. C[d] has completeness and cocompleteness properties at least as good as those of C, and it is abelian if C is. Dualization gives the other construction: a category C[i], the category of inverse systems in C, into which C also embeds and which satisfies similar properties, except that directed downsets in the E-quotient and M-subobject posets are replaced by directed upsets.

Notizen: Abstract The theory of associated prime ideals of anR-module, and of tertiary decompositions, generalizes toL-modules, whereL is a complete modular lattice and anL-moduleM is a complete modular lattice together with an appropriate module actionp:L×M→M. Given appropriate chain conditions onL andM, the theory of associated prime ideals, existence and uniqueness properties for tertiary decompositions, and a form of the Krull intersection theorem all hold in generalized form. If more stringent conditions apply, the theory reduces to a generalized theory of primary decompositions and a second uniqueness theorem holds. The theory can be applied to congruence lattices of algebras in congruence-modular varieties of algebras, using the generalized commutator operation. An important special case is the theory of finite groups, where the descending chain condition allows a natural choice of a distinguished tertiary decomposition and this yields a canonical decomposition of any finite group as a subdirect product of “cotertiary” finite groups. The group-theoretic application of the tertiary theory yields elementary structure theorems about Galois extensions of fields, where the tertiary decomposition of the Galois group transforms into a representation of a Galois extension as a compositum. For example, given a fieldF, there are distinguished “tertiary” field extensions ofF, of which all other finite Galois extensions ofF are compositums.

Notizen: Abstract: We study the spectral properties of one-dimensional whole-line Schrödinger operators, especially those with Sturmian potentials. Building upon the Jitomirskaya–Last extension of the Gilbert–Pearson theory of subordinacy, we demonstrate how to establish α-continuity of a whole-line operator from power-law bounds on the solutions on a half-line. However, we require that these bounds hold uniformly in the boundary condition. We are able to prove these bounds for Sturmian potentials with rotation numbers of bounded density and arbitrary coupling constant. From this we establish purely α-continuous spectrum uniformly for all phases. Our analysis also permits us to prove that the point spectrum is empty for all Sturmian potentials.

Notizen: Summary The DNA sequence of a 3886-bp genomic region containing the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) gene fromDrosophila affinidisjuncta, and the RNA sequences of theD. affinidisjuncta Adh transcripts, are presented. These data support the conclusion that twoAdh promoters generate distinct, developmentally regulatedAdh transcripts. Correlations between these sequences and the transcription map are discussed. Comparisons between these and equivalent data fromD. melanogaster are also presented. We note the following observations: (1) Except at the extreme 3′ end, the two genes are identically organized. (2)Drosophila Adh protein accumulates amino acid replacements at the rate of approximately 0.5 per million years. (3) Among the non-protein-coding DNA sequences, putative homologies occur in the two promoter regions.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we test the utility of the mud deposition boundary depth (mud DBD) theory (Rowanet al. 1992) as a means of maximizing sampling efficiency in paleolimnological investigations, particularly those that apply to210Pb dating. The mud DBD is defined by the relationship between near bottom wave velocity and particle threshold velocity, with wave and particle threshold theory simplified to terms of exposure and depth. Mud DBD theory can be used to define the depositional zone in lakes, and within the depositional zone defined by the mud DBD: 1) there is a high probability of obtaining a representative core, 2) variation in mass sediment accumulation rate (MSAR) is not correlated with water depth, and 3) variation in MSAR is considerably reduced from the whole lake average. This suggests that mud DBD theory can account for the effects of sediment focusing, and that the mud DBD defined depositional zone is the zone to which fine-grained sediments are focused. Finally, we have shown that to optimize sampling effort, 5 to 10 cores within the depositional zone are necessary for a reasonably precise estimate of the mean mass sediment accumulation rate. In addition, the use of mud DBD theory prior to sampling can dramatically reduce the cost associated with analyzing large numbers of cores for210Pb.

Notizen: Abstract We present notions of module over a universal algebra, and linear representation of a universal algebra, which have gained currency with categorical algebraists, we give several intriguing examples of these objects, showing that important aspects of universal algebras can be studied in this context, and we describe the theory ofenveloping ringoids, which have categories of left modules equivalent to corresponding categories of modules and linear representations. Algebras in many of the familiar varieties of algebras, which have underlying groups, turn out to have enveloping ringoids that are equivalent to familiar rings. Nonempty algebras in an abelian varietyV have an enveloping ringoid equivalent toR(V), the so-calledring of the variety V.

Notizen: Abstract We call an elementa of a finite-height latticeL conic if all coversb i , ofa form coverings 〈 a,b i 〉 which are related suitably (by “strict projective equivalence”) inL. This leads to existence and uniqueness theorems forconic decompositions. All of this is defined in general lattices, the class of lattices with a.c.c. and a generalized form of semimodularity calledConesemimodularity being the natural framework for most of the results. In a varietyV of universal algebras, we call an algebraA conic if it is a homomorphic image of some algebraA′ ∈L with kernelα, say, such thatα is conic in ConA′. Conic decomposition of the 0 congruence leads to a subdirect product decomposition with conic algebras as factors. Special properties of conic algebras are given. We also consider a dual notion, which in suitable lattices leads to join-decompositions of lattice elements.
