Notes: Summary Restraint-induced stress potentiated morphine catalepsy in rats. This potentiation was partially antagonized by pharmacologic treatments decreasing central serotonin, acetylcholine, prostaglandins and by naloxone. Selective increase in central dopamine also inhibited the potentiation.

Notes: Summary A high affinity, low capacity 3,5,3′-triiodo-L-thyroinine (T3) specific binding was detected in the nuclei preparation from human corpus luteal nuclei by using an in vitro thyroid hormone binding assay. The bound hormone was effixciently separated from free hormone by the use of 40% polyetrhylene glycol. Under standardized assay conditions of pH 8.6 at 37°C and a 2-h incubation time, the binding in the corpus luteal nuclei was saturable with Kd 4.94×10−10 M with low maximum binding capacity (1.70 p. mol/mg DNA). Competitive binding studies with hormone analogues indicated that T3 binding to corups luteal nuclei is hormone-specific. Findings indicated a driect effect of thyroid hormone on the human corpus leteum.

Notes: Abstract The initiation of crack growth was observed in single edge notched tensile specimens under plane strain conditions. The shape of the deformation zone varied from being balloon-like above 12 MPa and nearly planar below but neither shape conformed to that predicted by the conventional shear type yield criteria. The initial damaged zone grew at a constant velocity with a stress dependence ofV=V 0 σ n . The spectrum of damage morphologies that preceed crack growth consists of a leading edge of crack-like pores followed by a region of increasing fibrillation which is terminated by a region of increasing fibril fracture.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics and microstructural changes associated with the initiation of slow crack growth in PE were measured. The initiation process consists of an instantaneous deformation zone which grows at a constant velocity until the beginning of fracture. The velocity of the damaged zone accelerates when the fibril fracture begins at the root of the initial notch. It was found that the initial velocity of the deformation zone depended on stress to about the 4th power and had an activation energy of about 100 kJ mol−1; these results are about the same as those found by Chan and Williams for the crack growth velocity. It is concluded that both crack initiation and crack growth are governed by the same fundamental process, notably fibril thinning.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of phase transition from the isotropic state to the nematic mesophase of a main-chain, thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer has been studied by DSC and optical microscopy. Avrami-type analysis of the data gives an exponent close to 1.0 which suggests nucleation followed by rod-like growth.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-three N 3-2-, -3- or -4-substituted aryl-N 1-(alkyl/aryl/substituted aryl)-triazene N 1-oxides were synthesized and evaluated for their anticonvulsant and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory activities. Most of the compounds exhibited MAO inhibitory activity in vitro, and kinetic studies conducted with N 3-4-chlorophenyl-N 1-methyltriazene N 1-oxide, the most potent inhibitor, showed that the inhibition is non-competitive in nature. The MAO inhibiting activity of the compounds correlated well with their anticonvulsant effect against maximal electroshock-induced seizures in rats. Acute toxicity studies indicate that the compounds have a wide margin of safety.

Notes: Summary Further linkage data relating X-linked retinitis pigmentosa and DNA probe DXS7 {L1.28} is presented in this paper. The current mean estimate of the recombination fraction (θ) including this and all published data, is 0.09, with confidence limits 0.04 to 0.17 (maximum Lod score of 14.01 at a θ of 0.08). There is no evidence for heterogeneity of recombination fraction between the 13 families for which data are available. However, it is argued that heterogeneity should be assumed to exist for the purposes of risk estimation. Mean estimates and variances of risk are calculated for hypothetical families each with different linkage data. In families in which no recombination has been observed, the mean and variance of risk are sufficiently small for the clinical use of this probe to be acceptable to many.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the observed rotational band structure in a number of odd-proton and odd-neutron nuclei situated in the rare earth region, can be reproduced in the particle-rotor model without any ad hoc reduction of the Coriolis matrix elements if a value of the pairing gap parameter, which is about 30–40% of that deduced from the corresponding odd-even mass difference, is used. The importance of the proper choice of the pairing gap parameter in the study of the Coriolis attenuation problem is emphasised.

Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to formulate the gate capacitance of MOS structures of Kane-type semiconductors under magnetic quantization, without any approximations of weak or strong electric field limits, on the basis of the fourth-order effective mass theory and taking into account the interactions of the conduction, light-hole, heavy-hole, and split-off bands. It is found, taking n-channel Hg1−x Cd x Te as an example, that the gate capacitance exhibits spiky oscillations with changing magnetic field, which is in qualitative agreement with experimental observations, reported elsewhere, in MOS structures of the same semiconductor. The corresponding results for n-channel inversion layers on parabolic semiconductors are also obtained from the expressions derived.
