    Description: This cruise will be dedicated to the recovery of three and deployment of two deep ocean RAMA moorings, and the recovery of five deep ocean subsurface (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) ADCP moorings. The moorings are a part of the Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA). This array is under development as part of a multi-national effort to provide data essential for monitoring, understanding, and predicting basin scale ocean-atmosphere variability such as the Asian monsoon, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation. (Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) CTD operations were conducted after every RAMA and ADCP Mooring buoy deployment/retrieval locations.

    Description: Continuous time-series measurements of near surface meteorological and ocean variables obtained from Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA) moorings at 15°N, 90°E; 12°N, 90°E; and 8°N, 90°E and an Ocean Moored buoy Network for Northern Indian Ocean (OMNI) mooring at 18°N, 90°E are used to improve understanding of air-sea interaction processes and mixed layer (ML) temperature variability in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) at seasonal time scales. Consistent with earlier studies, this analysis reveals that net surface heat flux primarily controls the ML heat balance. The penetrative component of shortwave radiation plays a crucial role in the ML heat budget in the BoB, especially during the spring warming phase when the ML is thin. During winter and summer, vertical processes contribute significantly to the ML heat budget. During winter, the presence of a strong barrier layer and a temperature inversion (warmer water below the ML) leads to warming of the ML by entrainment of warm subsurface water into the ML. During summer, the barrier layer is relatively weak, and the ML is warmer than the underlying water (i.e., no temperature inversion); hence, the entrainment cools the mixed layer. The contribution of horizontal advection to the ML heat budget is greatest during winter when it serves to warm the upper ocean. In general, the residual term in the ML heat budget equation is quite large during the ML cooling phase compared to the warming phase when the contribution from vertical heat flux is small.

    Notes: Abstract The indoor (basement) radon concentrations and the uranium, organic carbon, and radon contents of samples from the underlying Ohio Shale (Upper Devonian) were investigated in six approximately 100 square kilometer areas of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Erie-Huron, Franklin, Pike, and Logan counties. The thickness and lithology of the sediment overburden above the Ohio Shale in these areas also was investigated. Results show that the amount of radon gas emanating from the Ohio Shale is a direct function of the uranium concentration in this geologic unit and that the uranium itself is ultimately controlled by the amount of organic matter. Uranium, organic matter (as measured by total organic carbon), and radon in the Ohio Shale outcrops all increase in a westward direction across Ohio. Similarly, the indoor radon concentration in houses increases from east to west across the state. Where the average thickness of the sediment overburden exceeds 27 m (Franklin and Logan counties), much of the radon in houses may be derived from Ohio Shale clasts in the glacial till. In other areas where the average overburden thickness is 6 m or less (Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Erie-Huron, and Pike counties), the indoor radon levels appear to be directly controlled by emanations from the underlying Ohio Shale bedrock.

    Notes: Abstract A comparative study has been made on the pigment composition and nitrogenase activity of whole filaments and isolated beterocysts from a mutant strain of Anabaena CA. The whole cell absorption spectra of intact filaments and isolated heterocysts showed close resemblance especially between 550–700 nm region. On a quantitative basis the chlorophyll a content was found almost equal between the vegetative cell and heterocyst but the c-phycocyanin content in the heterocyst was about 1/2 that of the vegetative cell. The purification of the phycobiliprotein on DEAE-cellulose showed the presence of c-phycocyanin (γmax 615 nm) and allophycocyanin (γmax 645 nm, shoulder 620 nm). Isolated heterocysts under H2 showed acetylene reduction rates of 57 nmol C2H4/mg dry wt·min (342 μmol C2H4/mg chl a·h), whereas intact filaments reduced at the rate of 18 nmol C2H4/mg dry wt·min (108 μmol C2H4/mg chl a·h). This rate accounts for 30% recovery of nitrogenase activity in isolated heterocysts compared to whole filaments. The activity was strictly light dependent and was linear under H2 for more than 3 h. Addition of as little as 5% H2 under argon stimulated the C2H2 reductionseveral fold. The acetylene reduction (nitrogenase activity) also showed tolerance to 5% added O2 either under H2 or argon. The results suggest that the heterocyst of Anabaena CA-V is different in some characteristics (viz., higher endogenous C2H2 reduction rate, prolonged activity and higher levels of phycobiliproteins) than those reported in other Anabaena species.
