Description: Stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen isotope (δ18O) were performed on the benthic foraminiferal species Uvigerina spp. The foraminiferal specimens were selected from piston core M78/1-235-1, which was recovered from Tobago Basin (11°36.53'N 60°57.86'W) from 852 m water depth during R/V Meteor Cruise 78/1. Sampling and analytical studies were carried out from 412.5 to 800 cm core depth at 2-4 cm spatial resolution. This dataset extends the existing benthic proxy records (Poggemann et al., 2017; doi:10.1029/2018PA003376) further back in time, now focusing on the glacial time period and the latest fully developed D/O events (~22.7-37 ka BP). The isotope analyses were performed in 2017 and 2019 on a Thermo Scientific MAT 253 mass spectrometer with an automated Kiel IV Carbonate Preparation Device. The proxy data provide stratigraphical information on the Tobago Basin core M78/1-235-1.

Description: Stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen isotope (δ18O) and Mg/Ca-measurements were performed on the planktonic subsurface-dwelling foraminiferal species Globorotalia truncatulinoides. The foraminiferal specimens were selected from piston core M78/1-235-1, which was recovered from Tobago Basin (11°36.53'N 60°57.86'W) from 852 m water depth during R/V Meteor Cruise 78/1. Sampling and analytical studies were carried out from 630 to 800 cm core depth at 1-2 cm spatial resolution. This dataset extends the existing subsurface proxy records (Reißig et al., 2019; doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.897083) further back in time, now focusing on the time period of the latest fully developed D/O events (~30-37 ka BP). The isotope analyses were performed in 2019 on a Thermo Scientific MAT 253 mass spectrometer with an automated Kiel IV Carbonate Preparation Device. Trace metal analyses were performed on a VARIAN 720-ES Axial ICP-OES, a simultaneous, axial-viewing Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometer coupled to a VARIAN SPS3 sample preparation system. The proxy data provide information on the Tobago Basin subsurface hydrography in relation to Western Boundary Current and North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre interdynamics.

Description: This dataset provides depth, age, and sediment reflectance data of piston core M78/1-235-1, which was recovered from Tobago Basin (11°36.53'N 60°57.86'W) from 852 m water depth. A MINOLTA CM-508d hand-held spectrophotometer was used during R/V Meteor Cruise 78/1 to measure the light reflectance (L*) of the sediment. The spectral reflectance is measured over a wavelength spectrum from 400 to 700 nm at a 10 nm pitch. Routine measurements were made at 1 cm intervals and automatically recorded using the SPECTRAMAGIC® v.2.11 software. The L*- dataset without age information is archived at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.788740 (Bahr et al., 2012). The L* data provide stratigraphical information, and information on fluvial supply of terrigenous matter to the core location.

Description: The transition from the early Pliocene "Warmhouse" towards the present "Icehouse" climate and the role of Gateway dynamics are intensively debated. Both, the constrictions of the Central American Seaway and the Indonesian Gateway affected ocean circulation and climate during the Pliocene epoch. Here, we use combined d18O and Mg/Ca ratios of planktonic foraminifera (marine protozoa) from surface and subsurface levels to reconstruct the thermal structure and changes in salinities from the Southwest Pacific Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 590B from 6.5 to 2.5 Ma. Our data suggest a gradual cooling of ~2 °C and freshening of the sea surface during ~4.6-4 Ma with an increased meridional temperature gradient between the West Pacific Warm Pool and the Southwest Pacific when the closing of the Central American Seaway reached a critical threshold. After ~ 3.5 Ma, the restricted Indonesian Gateway might have amplified the East Australian Current, allowing enhanced heat transport towards the Southwest Pacific with reduced meridional temperature gradients when the global climate gradually cooled. At the same time our data suggest a cooling and freshening of Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) or/and an increased northward flow of SAMW towards Site 590B, possibly a first step towards the present Antarctic Frontal System.

    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Palaeoclimate records and numerical model simulations indicate that changes in tropical and subtropical sea surface temperatures and in the annual average position of the intertropical convergence zone are linked to high-latitude climate changes on millennial to glacial-interglacial timescales. It has recently been suggested that cooling in the high latitudes associated with abrupt climate-change events is evident primarily during the northern hemisphere winter, implying increased seasonality at these times. However, it is unclear whether such a seasonal bias also exists for the low latitudes. Here we analyse the Mg/Ca ratios of surface-dwelling foraminifera to reconstruct sea surface temperatures in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico for the past 300,000 years. We suggest that sea surface temperatures are controlled by the migration of the northern boundary of the Atlantic Warm Pool, and hence the position of the intertropical convergence zone during boreal summer, and are relatively insensitive to winter conditions. Our results suggest that summer Atlantic Warm Pool expansion is primarily affected by glacial-interglacial variability and low-latitude summer insolation. Because a clear signature of rapid climate-change events, such as the Younger Dryas cold event, is lacking in our record, we conclude that high-latitude events seem to influence only the winter Caribbean climate conditions, consistent with the hypothesis of extreme northern-hemisphere seasonality during abrupt cooling events.
