    Notes: A variety of experiments have been performed on the TFTR tokamak [Wilson et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1988 (IAEA, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 1, p. 691] utilizing ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating. Of special interest has been the insight into plasma performance gained by utilizing a different heating scheme other than the usual neutral beam injection (NBI). Utilizing ICRF heating allows control over the power deposition profile independent of the plasma fueling profile. In addition, by varying the minority concentration the power split between ion and electron heating can be varied. Confinement has been examined in high recycling gas fueled discharges, low recycling supershot plasmas, and peaked density pellet fueled discharges. Global confinement is found not to be affected by the method or localization of plasma heating, but the calculated local diffusivities vary with the power deposition profile to yield similar global values. In addition, sawtooth stabilization observed with ICRF heating has been investigated and found to occur in qualitative agreement with theory. ICRF sawtooth stabilized discharges exhibit peaked temperature and density profiles and have a safety factor q that appears to fall well below unity on axis.

    Notes: In the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Wurzburg, Paper No. A-2-2 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1993)] there have been at least three types of anomalous loss of alpha-like deuterium–deuterium (D–D) fusion products: (1) a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-induced loss of D–D fusion products correlated with Mirnov and fishbone-type oscillations and sawtooth crashes, (2) a slow "delayed'' loss of partially thermalized D–D fusion products occurring without large MHD activity, and (3) ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH)-induced loss of D–D fusion products ions observed during direct electron heating experiments, and possibly also during 3He minority heating. In this paper each of these will be reviewed, concentrating on those due to MHD activity, which are the largest of these anomalous losses. The experimental results are compared with numerical models of various fusion product transport mechanisms.

    Notes: An electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) has just been completed in the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford. The design is similar to the devices installed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It is intended that the Oxford EBIT will be used for x-ray and UV spectroscopy of hydrogenic and helium-like ions, laser resonance spectroscopy of hydrogenic ions and measurements of dielectronic recombination cross sections, in order to test current understanding of simple highly charged ions.

    Description: A submersible study has been conducted in February - March 1978 at the axis of the East Pacific Rise near 21°N. The expedition CYAMEX, the first submersible program to be conducted on the East Pacific Rise, is part of the French-American-Mexican project RITA (Rivera - Tamayo), a 3-year study devoted to detailed geological and geophysical investigations of the East Pacific Rise Crest. On the basis of the 15 dives made by CYANA in the axial area of the Rise, a morphological and tectonic zonation can be established for this moderately-fast spreading center. A narrow, 0.6 to 1.2 km wide zone of extrusion (zone 1), dominated by young lava flows, is flanked by a highly fissured and faulted zone of extension (zone 2) with a width of 1 to 2 km. Further out, zone 3 is dominated by outward tilted blocks bounded by inward-facing fault scarps. Active or recent faults extend up to 12 km from the axis of extrusion of the East Pacific Rise. This represents the first determination from direct field evidence of the width of active tectonism associated with an accreting plate boundary. Massive sulfide deposits, made principally of zinc, copper and iron, were found close to the axis of the Rise. Other signs of the intense hydrothermal activity included the discovery of benthic fauna of giant size similar to that found at the axis of the Galapagos Rift. We emphasize the cyclic character of the volcanicity. The main characteristics of the geology of this segment of the East Pacific Rise can be explained by the thermal structure at depth below this moderately-fast spreading center. The geological observations are compatible with the existence of a shallow magma reservoir centered at the axis of the Rise with a half-width of the order of 10 km.

    Notes: Results from helium, iron, and electron transport studies on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Nucl. Fusion Res. 26, 11 (1984)] in L-mode and supershot deuterium plasmas with the same toroidal field, plasma current, and neutral beam heating power are presented. They are compared to results from thermal transport analysis based on power balance. Particle diffusivities and thermal conductivities are radially hollow and larger than neoclassical values, except possibly near the magnetic axis. The ion channel dominates over the electron channel in both particle and thermal diffusion. A peaked helium profile, supported by inward convection that is stronger than predicted by neoclassical theory, is measured in the supershot. The helium profile shape is consistent with predictions from quasilinear electrostatic drift-wave theory. While the perturbative particle diffusion coefficients of all three species are similar in the supershot, differences are found in the L mode. Quasilinear theory calculations of the ratios of impurity diffusivities are in good accord with measurements. Theory estimates indicate that the ion heat flux should be larger than the electron heat flux, consistent with power balance analysis. However, theoretical values of the ratio of the ion to electron heat flux can be more than a factor of 3 larger than experimental values. A correlation between helium diffusion and ion thermal transport is observed and has favorable implications for sustained ignition of a tokamak fusion reactor.

    Notes: Toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE) were excited by the energetic neutral beam ions tangentially injected into plasmas at low magnetic field in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion Research (IAEA, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 51]. The injection velocities were comparable to the Alfvén speed. The modes were identified by measurements from Mirnov coils and beam emission spectroscopy (BES). TAE modes appear in bursts whose repetition rate increases with beam power. The neutron emission rate exhibits sawtoothlike behavior and the crashes always coincide with TAE bursts. This indicates ejection of fast ions from the plasma until these modes are stabilized. The dynamics of growth and stabilization were investigated at various plasma currents and magnetic fields. The results indicate that the instability can effectively clamp the number of energetic ions in the plasmas. The observed instability threshold is discussed in light of recent theories. In addition to these TAE modes, intermittent oscillations at three times the fundamental TAE frequency were observed by Mirnov coils, but no corresponding signal was found in BES. It appears that these high-frequency oscillations do not have a direct effect on the plasma neutron source strength.

    Notes: The complete ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating system for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Tech. 21, 1324 (1992)], consisting of four antennas and six generators designed to deliver 12.5 MW to the TFTR plasma, has now been installed. Recently a series of experiments has been conducted to explore the effect of ICRF heating on the performance of low recycling, supershot plasmas in minority and nonresonant electron heating regimes. The addition of up to 7.4 MW of ICRF power to full size (R∼2.6 m, a∼0.95 m), helium-3 minority, deuterium supershots heated with up to 30 MW of deuterium neutral-beam injection has resulted in a significant increase in core electron temperature (ΔTe=3–4 keV). Simulations of equivalent deuterium–tritium (D–T) supershots predict that such ICRF heating should result in an increase in βα(0)∼30%. Direct electron heating has been observed and has been found to be in agreement with theory. The ICRF heating has also been coupled to neutral-beam heated plasmas fueled by frozen deuterium pellets. In addition ICRF heated energetic ion tails have been used to simulate fusion alpha particles in high-recycling plasmas. Up to 11.4 MW of ICRF heating has been coupled into a hydrogen minority, high-recycling helium plasma and the first observation of the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) instability driven by the energetic proton tail has been made in this regime.

    Notes: A new instrumental method has been devised for the individual, sequential, or collective measurement of the physical and chemical properties of liquids. The instrumental theory for the fiber drop analyzer (FDA) has been developed for the measurement of surface tension, viscosity, refractive index, and chemical composition of a liquid. An empirical theory is suggested for the measurement of pH in a limited range. The analytical theory for the fiber drop analyzer has been established, a prototype constructed and tested for measuring individually surface tension, viscosity, refractive index, and the chemical composition on a restricted set of test solution. The instrument is shown to have the capability to simultaneously measure the above measurands, but in addition can in individual measurement procedures, measure all these quantities. The instrument perhaps is also potentially capable of measuring specific gravity and pH in its existing form, and other optical properties of liquids with some basic modification. The laboratory FDA has been used to test a series of samples from a large cane sugar manufacturer's process and these measurements demonstrate that this technology has the potential to be used as a remote optrode industrial process monitor for sucrose manufacture and very possibly, elsewhere in other industrial applications.

    Notes: A method is introduced that is easy to implement and greatly reduces the systematic error resulting from quasi-ergodicity, or incomplete sampling of configuration space, in Monte Carlo simulations of systems containing large potential energy barriers. The method makes possible the jumping over these barriers by coupling the usual Metropolis sampling to the Boltzmann distribution generated by another random walker at a higher temperature. The basic techniques are illustrated on some simple classical systems, beginning for heuristic purposes with a simple one-dimensional double well potential based on a quartic polynomial. The method's suitability for typical multidimensional Monte Carlo systems is demonstrated by extending the double well potential to several dimensions, and then by applying the method to a multiparticle cluster system consisting of argon atoms bound by pairwise Lennard-Jones potentials. Remarkable improvements are demonstrated in the convergence rate for the cluster configuration energy, and especially for the heat capacity, at temperatures near the cluster melting transition region. Moreover, these improvements can be obtained even in the worst-case scenario where the clusters are initialized from random configurations.
