Notizen: Summary Oral theophylline was given to 6 adults with airways obstruction. The initial dose was 125 mg daily and this was increased by 125 mg each week. The final total daily dose reached was determined by side effects and ranged from 500 mg to 1125 mg. At the end of each week and before the next dosage increment steady state, trough plasma theophylline concentrations were measured. For each individual and for the group as a whole there was a highly significant linear correlation between theophylline dose and trough plasma concentration. This indicates that for oral theophylline, in adults, dose-dependent kinetics do not play a significant role and dose may be adjusted without fear of a disproportionate rise in plasma concentration.

Notizen: Abstract With the increased availability of personal computers with attached sensors to capture their environment, there is a big opportunity forcontext-aware applications; these automatically provide information and/or take actions according to the user's present context, as detected by sensors. When well designed, these applications provide an opportunity to tailor the provision of information closely to the user's current needs. A sub-set of context-aware applications arediscrete applications, where discrete pieces of information are attached to individual contexts, to be triggered when the user enters those contexts. The advantage of discrete applications is that authoring them can be solely a creative process rather than a programming process: it can be a task akin to creating simple web pages. This paper looks at a general system that can be used in any discrete context-aware application. It propounds a general triggering rule, and investigates how this rule applies in practical applications.

Notizen: Abstract Magnetic fluctuations in CeCu2Si2 were directly observed, both above the superconducting transition temperatureT C as well as below. Spatial correlations of the magnetisation density belowT C are weak, resulting in an essentially wavevector independent magnetic response. The intensity observed within an energy window of ±5 THz centred on ω=0 THz corresponds to 1µ β per Ce atom. Higher energy excitations peaking between 7–10 THz were observed and are probably due to higher crystal field levels.

Notizen: Abstract Following the discovery of the high temperature super-conductivity in YBa2Cu3O7−δ (T c ≃93 K) [1] it has been found that Y atoms can be substituted entirely by almost all of the rare-earth elements, except for Ce, Pr, and Tb, without changing the superconducting properties appreciably [2, 3]. The magnetic moments carried by the rare-earth atoms have apparently no influence on the superconducting properties. In Nd-, Sm-, Gd-, Dy- and Er-based compounds the rare earth moments order at low temperatures (0.025–2.2 K) [4–8] and the ordered antiferromagnetic state coexists with the superconducting state. We have investigated the antiferromagnetic ordering of these compounds by neutron diffraction both on powder and single crystal samples obtained from several laboratories [8–10]. Magnetic structures of all these compounds consist of antiferromagnetic (001) planes stacked ferro- or antiferromagnetically. There have been some controversies as to the stacking of antiferromagnetic (001) planes in GdBa2Cu3O7−δ.

Notizen: Abstract Polarised neutrons and polarisation analysis were used in a neutron scattering study of UPt3 both above the superconducting transition temperatureT c as well as below. Thus the existence of magnetic fluctuations in UPt3 was established unambiguously. For varyingQ vectors the magnetic scattering intensity was integrated over energy transfers ±20 meV to obtain a measure of the corresponding magnetic correlation function. No indication for strong spatial correlations of magnetisation could be detected. Furthermore inelastic transitions up to energy transfers of 80 meV were observed.

Beschreibung: Sorghum varieties suitable for grain production at temperate latitudes show dwarfism and photoperiod insensitivity, both of which are controlled by a small number of loci with large effects. We studied the genetic control of plant height and flowering time in five sorghum families (A–E), each derived from a cross between a tropical line and a partially isogenic line carrying introgressions derived from a common, temperate-adapted donor. A total of 724 F 2:3 lines were phenotyped in temperate and tropical environments for plant height and flowering time and scored at 9139 SNPs using genotyping-by-sequencing. Biparental mapping was compared with multiparental mapping in different subsets of families (AB, ABC, ABCD, and ABCDE) using both a GWAS approach, which fit each QTL as a single effect across all families, and using a joint linkage approach, which fit QTL effects as nested within families. GWAS using all families (ABCDE) performed best at the cloned Dw3 locus, whereas joint linkage using all families performed best at the cloned Ma1 locus. Both multiparental approaches yielded apparently synthetic associations due to genetic heterogeneity and were highly dependent on the subset of families used. Comparison of all mapping approaches suggests that a GA2-oxidase underlies Dw1 , and that a mir172a gene underlies a Dw1 -linked flowering time QTL.

Beschreibung: The reduced acylation phenotype describes the inability of certain accessions of maize ( Zea mays [ L .]) to produce significant amounts of acylated anthocyanins, which are typically the most abundant pigments. Acylated anthocyanins are important for their association with stability and are therefore important for the various industries using anthocyanins as natural colorants to replace synthetic dyes. Many anthocyanin acyltransferases have been characterized in other species; however, no anthocyanin acyltransferases have been characterized in maize. Therefore, a mapping population was developed from a cross between mutant stock 707G and wild-type acylation line B73 to identify the locus associated with the reduced acylation trait. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to assay the pigment content and composition of 129 F 2 lines generated in the mapping population. Recessive alleles of Colorless1 , Colored1 , and the reduced acylation mutant all decreased anthocyanin content while Intensifier1 increased anthocyanin content in aleurone tissue. The association of increased proportions of acylation with increased anthocyanin content indicates acylation may be important for increasing the stability of anthocyanins in vivo . Genotyping-by-sequencing was used to create SNP markers to map the reduced acylation locus. In the QTL analysis, a segment of Chromosome 1 containing transferase family protein GRMZM2G387394 was found to be significant. A UniformMu Mu transposon knockout of GRMZM2G387394 demonstrated this gene has anthocyanidin malonyltransferase activity and will therefore be named Anthocyanin Acyltransferase1 ( AAT1 ). AAT1 is the first anthocyanin acyltransferase characterized in a monocot species and will increase our knowledge of all acyltransferase family members.
