Notes: Abstract Following the discovery of the high temperature super-conductivity in YBa2Cu3O7−δ (T c ≃93 K) [1] it has been found that Y atoms can be substituted entirely by almost all of the rare-earth elements, except for Ce, Pr, and Tb, without changing the superconducting properties appreciably [2, 3]. The magnetic moments carried by the rare-earth atoms have apparently no influence on the superconducting properties. In Nd-, Sm-, Gd-, Dy- and Er-based compounds the rare earth moments order at low temperatures (0.025–2.2 K) [4–8] and the ordered antiferromagnetic state coexists with the superconducting state. We have investigated the antiferromagnetic ordering of these compounds by neutron diffraction both on powder and single crystal samples obtained from several laboratories [8–10]. Magnetic structures of all these compounds consist of antiferromagnetic (001) planes stacked ferro- or antiferromagnetically. There have been some controversies as to the stacking of antiferromagnetic (001) planes in GdBa2Cu3O7−δ.

Notes: Abstract Oviposition of four tortricid pests of vineyards (the European grapevine moth and the grape berry moth) and fruit orchards (the codling moth and the oriental fruit moth) is deterred by a blend of straight chain fatty acids and esters of fatty acids that have been identified in the eggs of one of them: the European grapevine moth (EGVM)Lobesia botrana. This is the first evidence of inter-specific recognition of an egg-like signal in moths. We demonstrate that oviposition site selection is influenced by population density, avoidance of deterrent being most important when females are isolated. Inter-specific egg recognition might be an important phenomenon, especially in species competing for a common food resource. We propose the term ‘oviposition regulating synomone’ for molecules and blends that affect the inter-specific spacing of eggs.

Notes: Abstract The oviposition of the European grapevine moth (EGVM)Lobesia botrana can be deterred by an extract of conspecific eggs corresponding to 20 egg equivalents. The reduction of the oviposition behavior is dose-dependent. Nine chemicals have been extracted from the eggs and identified as straight chain fatty acids and esters of fatty acids. A mixture of these rather simple molecules induces the same levels of deterrence as the total extract. It might be possible to use oviposition regulating pheromone in the future for the control of EGVM populations.

Notes: Abstract The odour of potato plants Solanum tuberosum L., elicits a true odour-conditioned positive anemotaxis in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say. Blending the odour of non-host plant species, namely wild tomatoes Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum C.H. Mull or cabbage Brassica oleracea L. var. gemmifera DC., with the attractive host plant odour blocks the release of upwind responses in non-experienced as well as experienced females. The neutralization of the beetle's orientation responses is obtained without repellency. It is expected that masking of host plant odour occurs often in mixed cropping systems.

Notes: Abstract Walking tracks of Colorado potato beetles,Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, were recorded on a locomotion-compensator in response to wind, odors of host plantsSolanum tuberosum L. and nonhost plantsLycopersicon hirsutum f.glabratum C.H. Mull, and to mixtures of these plant species. Host-plant odor induced positive anemotactic responses in starved females, whereas odor of the nonhostL. hirsutum was neither repellent nor attractive. The attractiveness of host-plant odor, however, was neutralized in the odor blend of plant species. Masking the attractive host-plant odor will hinder the beetle's searching for host-plant patches, and this principle may be exploited in pest control by mixed cropping.

Description / Table of Contents: Formation and Structures of N-(tri-t-butoxysilyl)aniline CompoundsPara-substituted N-(tri-t-butoxysilyl)anilines (t-BuO)3SiNRC4H4X-p, R = H, CH3, with substituents of high electron affinity (X = CN, NO2) were prepared by a one-pot reaction of tri-t-butoxychlorsilane, potassium t-butanolate and substituted anilines. Corresponding compounds with substituents of low electron affinity (X = OMe, H) preferably were prepared by metalation of anilines with sodium amide. Four crystal structures were determined. N-(tri-t-butoxysilyl)-p-nitro-aniline, N-methyl-(N-tri-t-butoxysilyl)-p-nitroaniline and N-(tri-t-butoxysilyl)-p-cyanoaniline crystallize at 298 K monoclinically, N-(tri-t-butoxysilyl)aniline crystallizes orthorhombically.
