    Notes: This paper presents a comparative study of the views of British and German engineers on the relationship between engineers and marketers and the conflict between them. Data have been collected from 151 British and 84 German engineers in 25 companies. Engineers who work in a variety of functions and at a number of different levels within an organisation are included. It has been found that the relationship is seen as being reasonable, with teamwork and increased knowledge of marketing by engineers both needed to make it function effectively. The engineers in both countries do not seek to dominate marketing, but they do feel that they need to obtain an understanding of management and of marketing. Conflict is not seen as being high in either country but German engineers perceive there to be lower levels of conflict between them and their marketing colleagues. German engineers see education and training differences as being the main reasons for conflict, whereas British engineers cite a lack of understanding between the two functions as the main reason. Engineers in both countries agree that better communications, more teamwork and more training are needed to improve the interface between the two functions. From this study, modifications to current theoretical frameworks can be seen and these are discussed.

    Notes: In this paper we address research issues related to the economics of electronic, Internet-based markets. First, what are the consumer cost-based differences for traditional and electronic markets? Second, what revenue implications does increased electronic market utilization have for sellers and transaction intermediaries? Based on an empirical, survey-based study of an electronic market in the sports trading card industry we find that prices, search costs, and sales taxes are lower in the electronic markets, while risk costs, distribution costs, and market costs are lower in traditional markets. We discuss the implications this has for seller, intermediary and government revenue sources.

    Notes: For corporations engaged in e-commerce, the Web serves as their primary interface with customers. Consequently, quality Web site design is a critical success factor for corporations with an e-commerce strategy. However, no comprehensive and coherent set of evaluation criteria exists that corporations and researchers can use to examine Web sites. This paper fills this gap by proposing Web site evaluation criteria and applying these criteria to different industry groups within Korea. Based on the literature survey, six categories of Web site evaluation criteria are defined: business function; corporation credibility; contents reliability; Web site attractiveness; systematic structure; and navigation. Using these criteria, Web sites in 12 industries were evaluated to determine if there are differences in Web site design between industries. The objective was to determine differences between industries which may provide information for benchmarking purposes. The results show significant differences in the design of Web sites across these different industry groups.

Outlines the results of qualitative research undertaken as part of a major study of readers of the UK Ethical Consumer magazine, which used focus groups to explore issues of major concern to ethical consumers - such as fair trade - and an elicitation questionnaire with a broader sample to ascertain the nature of factors influencing their beliefs on this subject.

    Notes: This paper presents the findings of a study of the marketing strategies and headquarters-subsidiary relationship of 186 German and 113 French subsidiaries operating in the UK. German companies were found to pursue market-focused strategies with an emphasis on product quality. Meanwhile, their French counterparts adopted a more short-term orientation with a stronger emphasis on cost-related strategies. Both sets of companies displayed a high degree of ethnocentricity towards the UK market with regard to strategic and product-related issues. However, high levels of autonomy were observed in French and German subsidiaries in other areas of marketing decision making. Some differences by industry sector were observed, with service organisations more likely to adapt their product/service offering to meet the needs of UK customers. Chemical and related companies were observed to have the highest level of autonomy with regard to marketing decision making.

    Notes: Purpose - To advance knowledge about the relationship between small firm networks and social capital by considering the network experiences of women business owners. To engage in such research, the paper proposes a conceptual model of business owner networking which is informed by social support theory. Design/methodology/approach - To develop a conceptual model of business owner networking the paper reviews extant small business network research and argues that, while network theory can provide an understanding of the impact which social capital may have on the entrepreneurial process, a concentration on quantitative methodologies has restricted understanding of this. To address the gender bias in small firm network research the paper integrates social support theory into a conceptual model of business owner networks. Findings - The conceptual model proposed recognises the interplay between network structures, interactions and contents and argues that consideration of these three network dimensions may provide insights into the impact of gender on business owner networks, social capital and experiences of business ownership. The paper also discusses the methodological implications of this model and proposes a research agenda for future business owner network research. Originality/value - The paper addresses a recognised gap in extant small business network research and proposes a conceptual model of business owner networking which may be better suited to and more reflective of women business owners' networking experiences.

    Notes: With the current trend toward globalisation and the increasing competitive and technological challenges of today's environment the formation of international strategic alliances has become an important part of many firm's international business strategies. Experience with international strategic alliances has shown that they face a number of problems, which can often result in the termination of the alliance. This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of both behavioural and organisational characteristics on the success of international strategic alliances. The results show that behavioural characteristics play a more significant role in explaining overall alliance performance compared to organisational characteristics. High levels of commitment, trust, coordination, interdependence and communication are found to be good predictors of international strategic alliance success. Conflict, meanwhile, is found to hamper good performance. By contrast organisational characteristics such as structure and control mechanisms are found not to strongly influence the success of international strategic alliances.

    Notes: The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to examine how manufacturing organisations used set-up time reduction and mistake proofing methods. The study was conducted in companies involved in manufacturing precision components. It was found that the companies were approaching the application of these concepts mainly through traditional work-study type methods rather than using Shingo's single minute exchange of die and poka-yoke or mistake proofing methodologies. There was clear evidence that the four companies are reducing set-up time through supporting mechanisms such as kaizen teams. The main poka-yoke devices used were jigs, gauges, pegs, lights and buzzers. Total productive maintenance, suggestion schemes and quality management tools and techniques were also employed to reduce set-up times and mistake proof processes. The main barriers to the application of these methods include traditional methods of working and resistance to change.
