Notes: In this paper we address research issues related to the economics of electronic, Internet-based markets. First, what are the consumer cost-based differences for traditional and electronic markets? Second, what revenue implications does increased electronic market utilization have for sellers and transaction intermediaries? Based on an empirical, survey-based study of an electronic market in the sports trading card industry we find that prices, search costs, and sales taxes are lower in the electronic markets, while risk costs, distribution costs, and market costs are lower in traditional markets. We discuss the implications this has for seller, intermediary and government revenue sources.

Notes: Belief formation is a neglected part of research in consumer behaviour and a potentially valuable area of study for helping to clarify the conditions under which they relate to actual patterns of behaviour. Outlines the results of qualitative research undertaken as part of a major study of readers of the UK Ethical Consumer magazine, which used focus groups to explore issues of major concern to ethical consumers - such as fair trade - and an elicitation questionnaire with a broader sample to ascertain the nature of factors influencing their beliefs on this subject.

Notes: Examines the likely effect of the changes in GATT on the Britishbeef industry and the implications of these changes for the marketingstrategies of British beef producers. The result of GATT changes is thatthere is unlikely to be any incentive for producers to increaseproduction. Instead, marketing strategies will have to centre onincreasing profitability by increasing quality and quality awarenesswith the objective of increasing margins. Examines the production andmarketing of quality beef in the UK and proposes a number of strategiesfor the future.

Notes: Suggests that consultants have tended to understand organizational systems in terms of organic metaphors of equilibrium adaptations between system and environment. Examines the implications of ideas from the study of complex adaptive systems that suggest that living systems co-evolve to far-from-equilibrium conditions, "at the edge of chaos". Takes this perspective for understanding the interactions occurring simultaneously in an organization's designed or formal network of relationships, and in its self-organizing or shadow networks. Provides illustrations from the author's consulting practice to suggest how such a perspective may inform OD intervention in organizational culture change.

Notes: Reports how the theorem of the texture "tuned" mask was modified to solve some problems encountered in the automatic faults (including filling bars, oil stains, weft-lacking and holes) detection and recognition of the plain woven fabrics. These problems are the faults of variable shapes and sizes, those of variable structure and the grey-level differences in the faults of oil stains. The index of the "tuned" mask in the texture "tuned" mask theorem was modified to converge the variability of the faults, and to elongate the distances between each fault's average texture energy so that the texture energy in normal texture and in faults can be confined to different fixed ranges. The results show that the optimum texture "tuned" mask found from the modified theorem of the texture "tuned" mask can be used satisfactorily to identify different faults due to structure, shapes and size variation. However, in the case of undertoned oil stains and lower density filling bars, this method may sometimes cause misidentification.

Notes: Uses two case studies to examine how changing market structures infood supply chains have affected the nature of collaboration betweenretailer and supplier. Looks at the implications for the nature ofmarketing as a management function and as an area of study. Concludeswith a discussion of the implications of closer supply chainrelationships for industry profitability.

Notes: Provides a detailed description of the qualitative research process experienced by the author when undertaking doctoral research. Recognising that there are few articles to guide the qualitative small firm researcher, it is the intention to provide a detailed account of the process and decisions involved when undertaking qualitative small firm research. From a discussion of the factors that convinced the author of the appropriateness of a qualitative approach, to a consideration of the outcomes generated, this paper guides the reader through the process of qualitative data collection and inductive analysis experienced by the author. In so doing, it demonstrates the value of using such an approach when undertaking small firms research.

Notes: This paper deals with the issue of mood effects on perceived transaction value in the context of price promotions. Specifically, mood states appear to bias evaluation and judgments in mood congruent direction. Based on Grewal et al.'s model and mood congruent effects, we propose that when encountering price promotions, buyers in a positive mood, as opposed to buyers in a negative mood, will perceive a greater transaction value. Moreover, we hypothesize that the effect of advertised selling price on perceived transaction value is likely to be moderated by buyers' mood states. Our results support these hypotheses. In addition, we also find asymmetric moderating effects on discount levels in positive mood state vs. in negative mood state. Managerial implications and future research directions are also discussed.

Notes: This paper uses the findings of a recent study of professional women returning to work after a career break. It critically examines their return to work following attendance of a European funded updating course, and evaluates the initiative in terms of job and career success in terms of the women's own perceptions. The study showed that the majority of women resumed work following the updating programme, but not necessarily at a level commensurate with their qualifications and experience, nor in their original professional area. Paradoxically, the respondents did not always see this as a negative outcome, and a large proportion of them attributed their successful return to completion of the professional updating course. The paper concludes by suggesting that a traditional female career model has not only continued relevance for women, but may be increasingly relevant to men. This presents a challenge to both policy makers and course providers.

Notes: In today's highly competitive and economically driven commercial aviation market, the trend is to make aircraft systems simpler and to design and develop them faster resulting in lower production and operational costs. One such system is the high-lift system. A methodology has been developed which merges aerodynamic data with kinematic analysis of the trailing-edge flap mechanism with minimum mechanism definition required. This methodology provides quick and accurate aerodynamic performance prediction of the flap deployment mechanism early on in the high-lift system preliminary design stage. Sample analysis results for four different deployment mechanisms are presented as well as descriptions of the aerodynamic and mechanism data required for evaluation. Extensions to interactive design capabilities are also discussed.
