    Notes: The present paper is concerned with the coating applications of a vinyl ester resin derived from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A and its urethane derivative. The mild steel panels coated with the synthesized resins were evaluated for their gloss on the surface, scratch hardness and chemical resistance. The incorporation of styrene in the resin systems improves the properties of coatings remarkably.

    Notes: The effect of 2,450-MHz CW microwaves on natural killer (NK) cell activity and lymphocyte responsiveness to mitogen stimulation was studied in mice. Groups of mice were irradiated at power densities of 5, 15, or 30 mW/cm2 (SAR = 3.5, 10.5, and 21 W/kg respectively) for 1.5 h on 2 or 9 consecutive days. NK cell activity was determined using an in vitro 51Cr release cytotoxicity assay and an in vivo tumor-cell clearance assay. No consistent change was observed in the mitogen response of spleen cells from sham compared with irradiated mice. A significant suppression of NK cell activity measured in vitro was observed for mice irradiated at 30 mW/cm2, but not at 15 or 5 mW/cm2. A significant suppression of NK cell activity, as determined using the in vivo tumor clearance assay, was also observed at 30 mW/cm2. NK cell activity, as determined using the in vitro assay, returned to normal within 24 h following the last irradiation. Treatment of mice with hydrocortisone caused suppression of NK cell activity measured in vitro and in vivo. Paradoxically, peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis was enhanced following irradiation at 30 mW/cm2, the power density at which NK activity was suppressed. The possible role that microwave heating plays in producing these effects is discussed.

    Notes: Wholly aromatic polyamides, including poly(1,4-phenyleneisophthalamide) and poly(1,4-phenyleneterephthalamide) are N-methylated to render them soluble in N,N-dimethylformamide, a common size-exclusion chromatography eluent. The procedure N-methylates 50-55% of the total amide linkages in these two examples, permitting reproducible measurement of their absolute molecular weight distributions using differential viscometry detection. There is no observable degradation in molecular weight resulting from the N-methylation, provided the excess methylating reagent is destroyed shortly after completion of the derivatization by quenching with potassium acetate. The validity of the molecular weight data obtained by the method is confirmed by light-scattering measurements on derivatized polymer and by comparison to the molecular weight of underivatized polymer that can be approximated from the intrinsic viscosity in concentrated sulfuric acid. The method is applicable to a variety of wholly aromatic polyamide structures. Examples are given.

    Description: Seven patients with hematologic malignancy refractory to conventional therapy were treated with 1000 rads midpoint tissue dose of whole-body irradiation followed by infusion of marrow from an HL-A matched sibling. Three patients with advanced leukemia showed histologic evidence suggestive of engraftment but the graft did not function and they died after 18, 26, and 30 days. Four patients, three with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and one with Hodgkin’s disease, treated while in good clinical condition, showed evidence of a functioning marrow graft within 3 wk. Engraftment was proved by cytogenetic analysis in three cases with donors of the opposite sex. One patient died with graft-vs.-host disease (GVH) after 37 days. The other three had mild to moderate GVH. Two patients showed recurrent leukemia and died after 85 and 102 days. In one of these patients, a girl, the recurrent leukemia was in male donor cells. One patient, a boy, is alive and well after 200 days with only female donor cells in the marrow. He shows no evidence of GVH and, as yet, no leukemia.

    Notes: Complexes of the type [crown+M]+ were observed following laser desorption ionization of 18-crown-6 molecules ‘doped’ with K+, Cs+, and Ba+. Laser desorption ionization of 15-crown-5 and 12-crown-4 ‘doped’ with the same metals gave [(crown)]2+[M]+ type sandwich complexes. Binding energies of crown ethers with different metal ions in all such complexes have been estimated from appearance energies obtained in the collisionally-activated dissociation of the corresponding laster desorbed complexes.

    Notes: We describe the design philosophy, structure, and supporting tool kits of the NWChem computational chemistry package. The primary purpose of this effort was to develop efficient parallel algorithms for a broad range of methods commonly used in computational chemistry. To facilitate this, we developed a shared nonuniform access memory model which simplifies parallel programming while at the same time providing for portability across both distributed- and shared-memory machines. In addition to this specific focus on parallelization, a substantial effort has been made to simplify the general problem of large-scale software development, which is common to many research groups. We find that this simplification can be achieved through judicious use of ideas from the computer science field of software engineering in the design and implementation of the program with minimal extra effort on the part of the chemist. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy is used to compare the adsorption onto aluminium oxide of poly(ethylene glycol) of relative molar mass 400 (PEG400) with poly(ethylene glycol) that has been coordinated with zinc chloride. This work carried out on a low-molecular-weight analogue of a polymer electrolyte reveals that the steric hinderance brought about by the coordination of zinc chloride with poly(ethylene glycol) changes the mechanism by which the polymer bonds to an aluminium oxide surface. The zinc bonds both to atmospheric water and to the ether oxygens in the polymer, which restricts the conformational freedom of the polymer. This restriction causes the attachment of the polymer to the aluminium oxide substrate to be primarily by hydrogen bonding, which reveals itself through the appearance of an extra peak in the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum at ∼440 meV. The implication is that when monolayer coatings of PEG400/ZnCl2 are adsorbed on aluminium oxide, the coordination of the zinc with the polymer imposes a structure upon the latter.

    Notes: An unstable mutation for anthocyanin pigmentation in soybean (Giycine max [L.] Merr.) was identified in 1983. The mutability is conditioned by an allele at the w4 locus that is recessive to wild type. The population containing the mutable allele is known as the w4-mutable line. Most plants in the line have chimeric flowers with purple sectors on a near-white background. The mutable allele yields germinal revertants at a rate that varies from 5 to 10% per generation, and the revertant alleles are stable. Approximately 1% of the progenies derived from germinal revertant plants contain mutations at other loci These features, as well as the occurrence of pale flower phenotypes and changes of state, suggest that a transposable element system is producing the unstable phenotype.Several new mutants were isolated in an experiment designed to tag loci. The first three chlorophyll-deficient mutants found (CD-1, CD-2, and CD-3) are inherited as single-gene recessives. Each of the mutants lacks the same two mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (MDH) bands. No recombination has been detected between the MDH phenotype and the chlorophyll-deficient phenotype. Genetic data indicate that the three mutants are allelic, and additional evidence suggests that each of the CD mutants is the result of a deletion. In the CD-1, CD-2, and CD-3 mutants, the deletions result in the silencing of an MDH locus, atypical chloroplast development, and an altered chlorophyll composition. Additional mutants for root necrosis, partial and near sterility, chlorophyll deficiency, and flower color isolated from the transposon tagging study have provided material for future research.

    Notes: The approach of Karfunkel and Gdanitz has been used to predict possible crystal structures of acetic acid and three of its monohalogenated analogs starting with the molecular structure alone. The results demonstrate that this approach is capable of finding many, if not all, of the possible packing arrangements of molecules of this size, but that it is not currently capable of correctly ranking these structures in terms of their enthalpy. This deficiency is probably due to inadequacies in the force field used to minimize the structures.
