Description: An undoped Ge photocapacitive detector is reported which has peak normalized detectivities at wavelengh 1.4 microns and chopping frequencies 13-1000 Hz of 9 x 10 to the 12th, 4 x 10 to the 9th cm Hz to the 1/2th/W operating respectively at temperatures 77, 195, and 295 K. The observed temperature, spectral, and frequency response of the signal and noise are explained in terms of the measured space charge and interface state properties of the device.

Description: Simulation studies were undertaken to determine the feasibility of a nuclear photon pumped excimer laser using a system where high pressure Xe is bombarded with electrons and protons to form 1720 A. Primary measurements included conversion efficiency and gain vs time measurements.

Description: Decoding schemes are proposed for the tracking systems of the galileo project. Quick look decoding schemes requiring only shift registers are given for the DSN (7, 1/2) and (7, 1/3) convolutional codes. These schemes are used when the communication channel is error free. The schemes decode the data, symbol errors, and the lack of node syncronization.

Description: A postflight postural equilibrium rail tests on spacecrews was used to prove a pronounced decrement in ability to maintain an upright posture after prolonged exposure to weightlessness. Support for the hypothesis that central neural reorganization occurs in response to environmental change is obtained when postflight decrease in stability on the rails and the time course for recovery are compared with preflight performance.

Description: Digital data from the infrared LANDSAT imagery were used to classify eutrophication levels of lakes in an effort to observe the effect of thermal discharges from power stations. LANDSAT data were also applied to identify and monitor wetlands, for soil surveys, sedimentation transport, and in general to assist in land use planning and resources management.

Description: The maneuver design for Viking was accomplished in two phases. First, there was the preflight design and strategy development that was dictated by mission objectives and requirements. Orbit determination and maneuver execution accuracy statistics were used, together with propellant budget considerations, to determine specific maneuver requirements and strategies. The second phase of the maneuver design occurred in flight. The maneuver analyses that were performed in flight, the software that was employed, and the actual inflight results for the entire orbital phase of the nominal Viking Mission are described with emphasis on prelanding objectives and geometry considerations. The actual adaptive design and implementation of the maneuvers as the mission progressed are considered. This design process included the minimization of both propellant usage and the effects of maneuver execution errors, while complying with several mechanization constraints.

Description: The lower susceptibility to vestibular stimulation aloft, compared with that on ground under experimental conditions, is attributed to a precondition, namely, either there is no need to adapt, or, as exemplified by the Skylab 3 pilot, adaptation to weightlessness is achieved. Findings in some of the astronauts emphasize the distinction between two categories of vestibular side effects: immediate reflex phenomena (illusions, sensations of turning, etc.), and delayed epiphenomena that include the constellation of symptoms and syndromes comprising motion sickness. The drug combinations 1-scopolamine and d-amphetamine and promethazine hydrochloride and ephedrine sulfate are effective in prevention and treatment of motion sickness. It is concluded that prevention of motion sickness in any stressful motion environment involves selection, adaptation, and the use of drugs.
