Notes: Abstract Repetition of the work ofSugino andTamaka 1 showed that acrylonitrile and guanidine react inDMF to yield not only 3,4,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2—a]pyrimidine-2,8(1H)-diimine (1), but a mixture (F) of1 (as a main product) and 2-amino-4-imino-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-propionitrile (7) besides one or two bases not identified so far.1 and7 were isolated as picrates. For the prove of their structures,1- and7-picrate were also prepared by an unequivocal synthesis starting from iminodipropionitrile hydrochloride8 · HCl: The latter on reaction with cyanamide gave9 which cyclized to afford a mixture of1,7 and 2-amino-4-oxo-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-propionitrile (10). The picrates of1 and7 were identical with those prepared from the acrylonitrileguanidine-condensateF. This result supports the prior proposed1 structures of pyrimidopyrimidine1 and of4,5 and6, obtained by hydrolysis of1. Nmr-, ir-and some of the mass spectra of1,4,7–10 (and their salts) are reported.

Notes: Abstract The oviposition rhythm in Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) is entrained by light-dark cycles and freeruns in continuous light with a period τ=25.9 hr and in continuous darkness with τ=21.8 hr. In the laboratory as well as in the field, the median of oviposition occurs on average 2.5 hr before the onset of darkness. The codling moth can adapt quickly to a new light regime. Oviposition was resynchronized with a normal light-dark cycle within 48 hr after freerunning for several days in continuous light.

Notes: Abstract During the course of investigations concerned with a cattle disease („Weidekrankheit”) in Austrian alpine regions, it became of interest to examine the sterol fractions of some typical grasing plants, since it seemed possible that a biological connection exists between the phytosterols, Vitamin D and related compounds and the cause of the “Weidekrankheit”. The sterol contents of eight different species of Austrian alpine grasses especially of Trisetum flavescens, were studied by gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. All contained sitosterol as the main component, besides cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, Δ7-cholestenol and Δ7,24 (28)-stigmastadienol. The aim of this examination was to establish whether there is an influence of fertilizing on the content of the above mentioned compounds: no remarkable difference between the sterol contents of fertilized and non-fertilized grasses could be found.

Notes: The miscibility of polymer blends is related to the polymer-polymer interaction parameter χ23, Several methods can be used to evaluate this parameter and five of the most important ones are reviewed: two equilibrium methods (melting-point depression and vapor sorption), a transport method (inverse-phase gas chromatography) and two scattering methods (neutron scattering and small-angle x-ray scattering). Examples are cited where χ23 values for a given blend were determined by several of these methods. This comparison leads to the conclusion that a reasonable agreement is often reached despite conceptual differences between the methods involved.

Notes: Abstract 25 species of lichens have been collected in semidesertic to desertic areas of Iran. On the basis of spatial relations to the substrate and anatomical features of the thallus three main groups (one with a subdivision based on colour and morphology of the thallus) can be differentiated. Selective advantages and peculiarities in connection with the desert habitat are pointed out, such as inverse thallus-structure, a dense network of skeletal hyphae in the substrate in otherwise epilithic species, proliferating areolae of the thallus, immersed pycnidia with trichogynes and brownish spores in groups with usually colourless spores. Most of the species are wide-spread in arid and often also in humid regions; only one species,Verrucaria buschirensis J. Steiner, seems to be endemic. The prevalence of cyanophilic lichens in deserts may have phylogenetic reasons, as these groups appear to date back to periods without higher vegetation and a desert-like environment.
