Notes: Summary A theoretical analysis has been carried out to investigate the kinetics involved in the CVD growth of CuInS2. A stagnant-layer model is assumed for the numerical, simulation. Computational results for the growth rate as a function of the substrate temperature, mean, gas velocity and partial pressures in the reaction tube are obtained. This analysis indicates that the substrate temperature plays a dominant role in the growth rate, which is consistent with our experimental data.

Notes: Summary Embryogenic callus cultures were obtained by culturing young inflorescence tissues of Hordeum vulgare cv. ‘PF51811’ (2x)XTriticum aestivum cv. ‘Chinese Spring’ (6x) hybrids on 2,4-D-containing N6 medium. After subculture for about 10 months the calli retained a high potentiality for somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration. Of about 300 regenerated plants, approximately 100 were transplanted to potting soil. Eight embryoids and three regenerated plants examined had 28 chromosomes identical to the original hybrid plants, while one regenerated plant was found to be a mixploid composed of cells with 28 and 56 chromosomes. The possibility for obtaining amphiploid hybrids through tissue culture is discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper develops an analysis for predicting the normal stress and interfacial shearing stress distribution along a single reinforcing fibre of a randomly oriented chopped-fibre composite, such as sheet moulding compound (SMC), from a knowledge of the constituent properties and the length-to-diameter ratio of the fibres. The analysis is useful in analysing the tensile strength of SMC, and as a guide to increasing the tensile strength by altering the elastic characteristics. The model is based on a generalized shear-lag analysis. Numerical values of the normal stress and interfacial shearing stress are presented as functions of various parameters. It is observed that the maximum normal stress occurs at the middle of the fibre and the maximum shear stress occurs at the end. The analysis is restricted to loading which does not result in buckling of the fibre; i.e., axial loads on the fibre can be at most only slightly compressive.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes recent analytical and experimental efforts to determine the effects of fibre aspect ratio, fibre spacing, and the viscoelastic properties of constituent materials on the damping and stiffness of aligned discontinuous fibre-reinforced polymer matrix composites. This includes the analysis of trade-offs between damping and stiffness as the above parameters are varied. Two different analytical models show that there is an optimum fibre aspect ratio for maximum damping, and that the predicted optimum aspect ratios lie in the range of actual aspect ratios for whiskers and microfibres when the fibre damping is small. When the fibre damping is great enough, however, the optimum fibre aspect ratio corresponds to continuous fibre reinforcement. Experimental data for E-glass/epoxy specimens are presented for comparison with predictions.

Notes: Abstract Application of the principles of linear fracture mechanics to the orthotropic composite materials is examined. It is shown that fracture toughness of unidirectional composites is independent of crack length but dependent on crack-fiber orientation. For experimental verification of the above principles, uni-directional glass epoxy material (Scotchply 1002) was used. The fracture toughness of Scotchply 1002 for different crack-fiber orientations is obtained by utilizing Solid Sap finite element program and compact tension specimens. An empirical formula relating the fracture toughness of the material for different crack-fiber orientation is found.

The letter C in these hybrids represents a 50% weight fraction continuous fiber composite layer while the R represents a 50% weight fraction randomly oriented chopped fiber composite layer. The standard compact tension specimens having notches oriented along and perpendicular to the fiber direction of the C layers were chosen. The flexural strength is purported to be an adequate parameter for crack-growth characterization in the cases where the observed crack-growth was in the direction perpendicular to the notch direction. For the cases of self-similar crack-growth, the measured fracture resistance was found to be lower than that predicted by a proposed rule-of-mixture relationship based upon the crack-energy release rates of the C layers and R layers.

Notes: Summary Distinct differences occur in the pigmentation and ultrastructural features of the Harderian glands in male and female hamsters. The results of a study on the effect of testosterone on the fine structure of the female Harderian glands are presented here. Glands from three groups of hamsters were examined at intervals up to 49 days: (1) testosterone injected, receiving 2mg testosterone propionate in 0.1 ml sesame oil per day; (2) sham-injected, receiving 0.1 ml sesame oil per day; (3) untreated controls. Testosterone injections caused a reduction in the number of dark-brown pigment granules in the acinar cells starting on the 6th day, whereas clusters of tubules, typical of adult male glands, appeared on the 4th day and increased in number thereafter. Lamellar structures, normally present in the female gland, decreased in testosterone treated specimens. These changes reversed after cessation of testosterone treatment. It is concluded that exogenous testosterone administered to female hamsters modifies the pigmentation and ultrastructure of their Harderian glands towards the male type and that this is a reversable phenomenon. There also appears to be an inverse relationship between the presence of tubular clusters in the acinar cells, and the degree of pigmentation.

Notes: The present work was aimed at providing basic mechanical property characterization of five different sheet molding compound (SMC) materials with glass content varying from 30 to 65 percent by weight. In particular, the objectives were to find variation in their tensile, flexural, and shear properties along with some information on fabrication-induced anisotropy that may be present in these materials. The flexural properties were measured using three-point bend tests, and double-rail shear tests were conducted for in-plane shear properties. A significant scatter was observed in all the properties, and no conclusive evidence about the fabrication-induced anisotropy was found, Flexural strength of each material was found to be significantly greater than the tensile strength. Finally, some interesting features associated with their tensile and flexural failure modes have also been discussed.

Notes: Singular finite element displacement functions for linear elastic fracture mechanics applications are investigated. The displacement fields are expressed in terms of polynomials. These polynomials are expanded in varying degrees of r and θ in order to examine the effect of the number and type of terms on the solution to various problems with known solutions. Methods of estimating the stress intensity factors for mode 1 and mode 2 are presented. Numerical results evaluating the effect of various r and θ terms on the solutions are presented.
